Bill and Mary, a couple about to celebrate their twenty ninth wedding anniversary are at odds: Mary yearns for a night of passion while Bill yearns to be left alone. To make matters more interesting, Paul's best friend is Danny who is married to Jennifer who is having an affair with Paul who is dating Kathy who is Danny's mistress and Jennifer's sister. In Act Two they all weekend at Bill and Mary's.

Unoriginal and Unfunny

Over the past twenty years or so, William Van Zandt and Jane Milmore have become favorites of the community theatre set--although heaven knows why. Their plays, which are typically written to star themselves, are wildly unoriginal, utterly unfunny, and completely without point.

Originally performed in 1982, HAVING A WONDERFUL TIME WISH YOU WERE HER is in many ways typical of the team's output. Danny is married to Jennifer; without her knowledge he is having an affair with her sister Kathy. Meanwhile, Paul is Danny's best friend and without Danny's knowledge is dating Kathy and having an affair with Jennifer. It takes an entire act to set up the premise; once that is accomplished, all four come face to face at Jennifer and Kathy's parents' home.

By and large, the play consists of six actors yapping mindlessly at each other for about two hours. There's a lot of "why can't we have sex now?" to this show, the usual bit about Danny mistaking Paul for Kathy in the dark, and lots of leaping about the stage with corsets and tennis rackets. The only thing the play is missing is a bear in the woods--no, wait, it's got that too. And the play doesn't so much end as simply stop without resolution. The whole thing reads very like an uninspired rehash of the less amusing moments of the 1970s sit-com THREE'S COMPANY. Tiresome in the extreme.

One of the more enjoyable memoirs I've read

Haven't finished this yet, but it is a riot. Berlioz is a great, funny and outspoken writer as well as a master composer. Several of the episodes are laugh out loud funny--his time at medical school in Paris, his plan to revenge himself on his faithless fiancé and her scheming mother.

About the Author
Edgar Rice Burroughs was a prolific American author of the 'pulp' era. The son of a Civil War veteran, he saw brief military service with the 7th U.S. Cavalry before he was diagnosed with a heart problem and discharged. After working for five years in his father's business, Burroughs left for a string of disparate and short-lived jobs, and was working as a pencil sharpener wholesaler when he decided to try his hand at writing. He found almost instant success when his story 'Under the Moons of Mars' was serialised in ALL-STORY MAGAZINE in 1912, earning him the then-princely sum of $400. Burroughs went on to have tremendous success as a writer, his wide-ranging imagination taking in other planets (John Carter of Mars and Carson of Venus), a hollow earth (Pellucidar), a lost world, westerns, historicals and adventure stories. Although he wrote in many genres, Burroughs is best known for his creation of the archetypal jungle hero, Tarzan. Edgar Rice Burroughs died in 1950.

The Original "Odd Couple"

Being a huge fan of "The Odd Couple" television series, I finally decided to read the play on which the TV show is based. THE ODD COUPLE, which premiered in 1965, was Neil Simon's first big success. His writing is consistently amusing and often flat-out hilarious; I laughed especially hard during the first scene, in which Oscar Madison and his poker-playing friends are trying to prevent Felix Unger, just thrown out of his home by his wife, from committing suicide! This "episode" was, of course, the starting point for the TV series, but unlike the show, the play has a single plot: Felix and Oscar get together, quarrel, date the Pigeon sisters, quarrel again, and ultimately "break up." Though the play is a comedy, there are interesting parallels to A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE in Oscar's poker games, particularly the one in the last scene during which Felix leaves. THE ODD COUPLE is an excellent example of Simon's wit. Next, I would love to see it onstage!

When you pair David Paymer and Nathan Lane as Felix and Oscar in the Odd Couple, you are in for a comic tour de force that over stretches its material. With a supporting cast which includes Dan Castellaneta and Yeardley Smith (both from The Simpsons) and Linda Purl, the cast is almost perfect. This production is a little too visual in a few of its jokes. However, on the whole, it unscrupulously grabs the audio listener by his ears and shakes him with laughter.

Classic American Comedy.

Before the movie, before the television series, before all the spin offs, there was just the play. The story is a classic spin on the buddy plot. Oscar Madison is a successful sports writer who happens to be best friends with Felix Unger, a newswriter for CBS. Each week Oscar has five of his buddies over for a Friday night game of poker. However, on one fateful night Felix fails to appear in time for the game. It turns out Felix has just been thrown out by his wife and has no place to go. Feeling sorry for his old friend, Oscar invites Felix to stay with him and be his roommate. What ensues is a classic Neil Simon look at friendship that will endure for ages.

Great for 10-11 year olds

We have been reading this play as part of our summer "keep our minds active" activities. This play is perfect as not only does it make the kids think (there are a lot of play on words and basic philosphy) but it as about a kid who ended up in the "doldrums" for not thinking, and for not appreciating his time off during the summer. Very good reading for my 10 and 11 year olds. The fact that it is play version is making it fun for them to read.

Great way to make high level reading understandable.

Doing a fantasy book as a two act play is a great way to make the material understandable. The play follows the book story line very closely, and I am doing it as a puppet play to deal with the fantastic aspects of this fantasy. Only thing that I would change is to use larger type and better spacing. Reading the type has been hard on the eyes. Easy ordering and fast delivery.

Entertaining, Intellectual Enjoyment

Tom Stoppard's famous play Arcadia takes place in the same English country estate across two eras: the early Nineteenth Century and the present day. The story divides between Thomasina, the owner's young daughter and her tutor Septimus, and the academics Hannah and Bernard, investigating a possible scandal caused by Lord Byron when he stayed there. The present-day researchers discover, among other things, Thomasina's mathematical gifts, the rise of the picturesque in landscaping, and the Romantic temperament, especially concerning love.

This is an extremely funny play, starting with Thomasina's opening line, "Septimus, what is carnal embrace?". At the same time, it also teaches us about science, math, and literature. It moves seamlessly between the two time periods, and gives all the information we need to understand the various topics in entertaining ways. It is a joy to read.

About the Author
Thornton Wilder (1897-1975) was an accomplished novelist and playwright whose works, exploring the connection between the commonplace and cosmic dimensions of human experience, continue to be read and produced around the world. His Bridge of San Luis Rey, one of seven novels, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928, as did two of his four full-length dramas, Our Town (1938) and The Skin of Our Teeth (1943). Wilder's The Matchmaker was adapted as the musical Hello, Dolly!. He also enjoyed enormous success with many other forms of the written and spoken word, among them teaching, acting, the opera, and films. (His screenplay for Hitchcock's Shadow of Doubt [1943] remains a classic psycho-thriller to this day.) Wilder's many honors include the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the National Book Committee's Medal for Literature.

Classics that are deserving of the term

Skin of Our Teeth and Our Town both were prize-winning plays. The Matchmaker became one of the most popular musicals of all time - Hello Dolly. Thornton Wilder's plays are in production at countless high schools across the country, and that's a pity - few students have the maturity or insight to bring these words strongly to life.
Skin of Our Teeth, the story of the Antrobus family in stone age Atlantic City, NJ, deals with indomitable humanity, and how we can prevail against all odds, but especially against our own impulses. It also brings up the consolations of literature and of past times.
Our Town is a simple little play about love and death, and how life is composed as a series of moments. It is so important to live in every, every, moment.
The Matchmaker is about living life to the fullest, even in the midst of grief and aging.
This makes these plays sound dreadfully simplistic, and full of high-school style morality. Thornton Wilder's writing is full of irony, wit, grace, kind humor, and style. His writing has a deceptive simplicity and rhythm. Read these plays to bring some beauty into your life.

Got to love this book in Spanish or in English. Based on a true story, quick reading. Young woman tries to find her Puertorican roots and she is offered yuca. Funny, Funny. Disappointing book

This book is misleading because the first 26 pages is called "Student to Scholar:The Guide for Doctoral Students". Not sure what this has to do with the title of the book which is "The Breast Cancer Survivor's Daily Quote Book:Celebrating Life Every Day of the Year". As a breast cancer survivor myself, I was hoping it would have breast cancer's survivor's stories incorporated into the book of daily quotes but it does not. So I'm very disappointed with this book. Save your money!!
