Military SF fans will relish the second entry in Baxter's Destiny's Children trilogy, set long after the events recounted in 2003's Coalescent. When navy pilot Pirius and his crew violate protocol during a skirmish with the alien Xeelee and end up capturing a ship from "mankind's most ancient and most powerful foe," instead of accolades, two versions of Pirius—Pirius Red and Pirius Blue, from different time lanes—receive punishment. Pirius Red accompanies the eccentric Nilis (we know he's odd because he never wears shoes) to the Earth system to research the captured ship and concoct a way to end the war, while Pirius Blue is sent in disgrace to the Xeelee front for army combat training. As Pirius Red explores the solar system, picking up clues to create a strategy to defeat the Xeelee by striking at their home system, Pirius Blue narrowly escapes death in combat and grows into a leader. Both come to question the doctrines that guide their lives as they realize the extent of their military conditioning. Weak characterization mars an otherwise well-told story as fast-paced action sequences flip to long, dry discussions about physics. Not content with one drop-dead hard-science idea, Baxter concatenates them, one building on the other; even his aliens represent ideas. Female readers may wish the author would take some lessons on portraying romance from Sharon Shinn.

Adult/High School–In humankind's Third Expansion, the species has spread throughout the galaxy and assimilated all challengers but the mysterious Xeelee; in a 20,000-year stalemate, humans have kept them at bay in the galaxy's center. Time travel (used by both sides to gather intelligence) creates numerous "drafts" of time lines, but apart from this uncertainty the endless war has brought about a strangely static human society. Soldiers and pilots are bred in vats near the Front and taught only war; few survive past their teens. When Prius, a young pilot, captures a Xeelee ship and takes it to the recent past for study, an innovative program is begun to develop new weapons technology. While Prius Blue (the pilot from the future time line, now stuck in this one) is sent to the Front, the younger Prius Red (from this time line) must travel throughout the solar system with an eccentric but brilliant scientist in a quest for knowledge needed for the anti-Xeelee weapon. Working with widely differing elements of society, Red learns many secrets he'd rather not know, adjusts to new knowledge, and grows into a leadership role: he heads up Exultant, the elite squadron tasked with deploying the new weapon. Even in a genre characterized by unfettered imagination, Baxter's future universe is extraordinary in its depth, breadth, and richness of invention. In the sequel to Coalescent [BKL N 15 03], humanity has been at war with the Xeelee for thousands of years. Pirius becomes one of the war's temporal paradoxes by escaping a battle by means of another pilot's use of time travel. Xeelee ship in tow, he and crew return to base two years before they left. Rather than hailed as heroes, they're sent down to the infantry. Pirius Red, Pirius' two-years-younger self, and squeeze Torec go to Earth in the care of Commission for Historical Truth member Nilis, who sees opportunity to end the war in Pirius' successful maneuver in defeating the Xeelee. But the Xeelee also use time-travel paradoxes, so hiding what the good guys are doing is as essential as striking the base of Xeelee operations, the galaxy's central black hole, Chandra. Interwoven with Nilis, Pirius, and company's efforts is the story of strange ancient civilizations, a story that leads eventually to Nilis realizing Chandra's true significance. Imaginative, well written science fiction

If you like science fiction you will like this book. It is imaginative, has some original ideas, and you care about the characters. While it would be good to read the first book in this series (coalescent), it isn't absolutely necessary. This second book in the series is set around 25,000 years to the future of the first book. It is a galaxy perpetually at total war. Humans have exterminated every alien species they meet, and now have a group of the last remaining aliens fighting a hugh several thousand-year-old battle at the very center of the galaxy, at a black hole named Chandra. Billions of soldiers are bred, conditioned, and die before their 20th birthdays, as they are basically hurled at the enemy, to keep the aliens from ultimately attacking earth. The story begins with one young pilot actually capturing an alien ship. This has never happened before. When he brings it back to base, he is punished for his initiative. The fear is that anything that disturbs the equilibrium of perpetual battle may ultimately tip things in a bad direciton for us. What happens subsequently is the subject of the novel. And a very good one it is.

Not quite exultant over Exultant

Exultant is the story of a pivotal event in the millennia-long human-Xeelee war. As such the book takes place in Baxter's familiar future history universe that has served as the setting for a large proportion of his novels (Raft, Ring, Vacuum Diagrams etc.). Although this novel is billed as (and is in a sense a sort of) a sequel to "Coalescent" and/or the 2nd entry in the Destiny's Children Trilogy, it can be read independently of the former and serves at least as much as a sequel/prequel to any of the other books that take place in the Xeelee universe.

As usual, the physics is great. This is hard SF at its best. The most interesting parts are a back story introduced in the last third of the book consisting of very brief chapters interposed between the chapters of the main story. These tell a cosmological story of the birth of the universe and the birth of life. Along the way these brief interludes address the anthropic principle, the matter-antimatter disequilibrium, symmetry breaking and many other issues currently the subject of intense study and speculation in modern cosmology and physics.

However, the physics aside, the main story itself is just OK. Since it takes place in Baxter's familiar universe at a specified time (approximately 20,000-25,000 years in the future), from Baxter's other writings that describe events that transpire up to millions of years in the future, we know that there are constraints on how the story must end. The main characters are not so believable nor is the core around which the book is written - the idea that mankind has stagnated intellectually, socially and technologically to the extent described in the book. Nor is the idea that Nilis, who is a sort of muddled mid-level governmental functionary, can interpret old "lost" scientific literature and new scientific data to reach conclusions far advanced beyond those of his contemporary scientists that are as novel and earthshaking as those of Einstein 20,000 years ago. But maybe these are quibbles. Baxter is still a great writer and his Xeelee universe/future history is still fascinating. I look forward to the last in this series to come, and still regard Baxter as one of the best currently writing hard SF. Exultant just wouldn't be the one that I recommend to someone to introduce them to his writing.

Shades of Ender's Game

After "Coalescent", I swore that I would not read "Exultant", but there it was, on the table in the bookstore, right there just a foot away, beckoning. So I caved. Now that I have read "Exultant", I have a better idea of what Baxter is trying to say with this series, however, I could not have deduced the direction "Exultant" would take by reading "Coalescent" and I have to stick to my original opinion of the rambling story in that book, though I have probably unfairly impugned Baxter's publisher.

Baxter stays with one main story this time. In shades of "Ender's Game", Baxter speculates upon a bizarre future for humanity while simultaneously probing into the singularity at the birth of the universe. His science is deep, deep, deep, fascinating and mind expanding, but try as I might I just could not keep up with his concepts. This is not a criticism though; Baxter is at his best when describes complex science through story, challenging reader's to stretch their imaginations while educating them at the same time.

I did enjoy this story. There are brief references to characters or situations in "Coalescent", but these references do not seem to be necessary for the progression of the characters and action in "Exultant". Some loose ends from "Coalescent" are not tied up, but again, are not necessary for this story. "Exultant" includes a few pages from the first chapter of the third book in this series, "Transcendence", and it looks as if Baxter will be returning to the end of "Coalescence" in this next book. Perhaps now the entire story will come together, loose ends will be tied up, and this story arc will make more sense.

About the Author
Brian Friel was born in Omagh, County Tyrone (Northern Ireland) in 1929. He received his college education in Derry, Maynooth and Belfast and taught at various schools in and around Derry from 1950 to 1960. He is the author of many plays that have taken their place in the canon of Irish Literature, including "Philadelphia, Here I Come!" (1964), "Lovers" (1967), "Translations" (1980), "The Communication Cord "(1982), and "Dancing at Lughnasa" (1990). In 1980 he founded the touring theatre company, Field Day, with Stephen Rea.

A gorgeous play. This is NOT for beginners, it is very Chekhovian. If not handled by skilled actors, and a skilled director it could be dreadful, but when done right it is very rewarding.

I just don't get it!

This French farce was translated by Beverley Cross for the British theatre. While the humor is truly an acquired taste, I felt that the women who were the flight attendants were nothing more than caricatures and the men, Robert and Bernard, were just misogynistic. Now, I know this is supposed to be light-hearted humor at best but I can't get past the obvious sexism and male chauvinism in the script. In fact, all of the characters in the play were really caricatures and you couldn't take them seriously and the plot was just absurd at best. I don't think that I want to spend money on tickets on a play about avoidance, swinging doors, and bachelors and dumb and blind stewardesses with a strange housekeeper who keeps up the charades for her employer's sake.

Play for the time period, but dated

As a theatre teacher, I ordered this product for my students to create tech-projects for Florida Thespians. My high-schoolers were attracted to the idea of a man juggling his three "fiance's". But the story has been done a million times (The Importance of Being Ernest comes to mind.) I can't imagine doing this as an actual play. The idea of "newfangled air travel" is somewhat dated and I can't [...] magine any way to make it current.

DON'T BUY THIS VERSION

This is a collection of three novels bound into a single volume. Unfortunately, whatever imbecile wrote the back cover "blurb" gave away virtually the entire ending to the first novel. And yes, even more besides. I really hope whoever was responsible lost their job over this.

So if you do wind up with this edition, STAY AWAY FROM THE BACK COVER!!!

Please understand that this is truly the only reason why I gave this collection a 1 star review: I just wanted my warning to leap out at people so that others could avoid my fate; the fate of a man who knew too much. Some things in this life you don't WANT to know. Like the ending of a novel BEFORE you read it.

Man, I really do hope that person lost their job...

As you can probably tell, I still get steamed just thinking about it. And all this is really quite a pity: the front-cover artwork is unusually powerful and evocative of the story itself. But that's just life I guess.

Incidentally, because I have seen some of my reviews crop up for editions other than the one I originally wrote them for, let me stress that I am saying all this about Peace And War: Forever Peace, Forever Free, Forever War: " Forever Peace " , " Forever Free " , " Forever War " (Gollancz S.F.).

Other than that, this is nice collected epic that includes three separate novels in a single volume. The style can perhaps best be described as intelligent space opera. Much of the technology to be found in this book is grounded in real science; particularly the use of sub-light space flight. This means that the time dilating effects of relativity come into play, which in turn becomes the basis for the most fundamental challenges faced by the characters on a psychological level. One never forgets that the first novel in the series - The Forever War - is a book that followed closely on the heels of the "new wave" of science fiction pioneered in the 1960's by authors such as J.G. Ballard.

The Forever War is also a novel that can very easily be interpreted as an allegory for the experience of many Viet Nam war soldiers; for the war they fought, and the experience of returning to to a society very different from the one they left. And indeed, in the author's note Haldeman provides, he himself accepts that this is part of the basis for the novel. However, The Forever War is also sufficiently grounded in universal human concerns that it works on a more timeless level as well.

If I wasn't judging the book by its cover, I'd give it 4 stars.

So yes; this is something that I would recommend reading. Just do yourself a favor and buy another edition.

Nice to get them together.

It is nice to get them all in one binding.
The stories are somewhat nostalgic, written in a time that seems "the good old days" for some, or something vague like the Crimean War for those who do not remember President Johnson. Our American Condition today is so very different. Yet there are points to ponder.

All three novels are worth reading and re-reading. Even though the end of "Forever Free" seems to be a weak gimmick. The very idea that God is not someone who would be a welcome guest at a home dinner is worth pondering.

The Forever Trilogy a must by if you read the Forever War

I read the Forever War as a teenager and have re-read it as much or more than any other book I have read.
I knew about this trilogy but just never picked it up.
I read Forever War then the 'bridge' store from "A Separate War" from the collection of the same name, then then sequel Forever Peace. Forever Peace is not the greatest story Haldeman ever wrote but it is still good. It was enjoyable to find out how William, Marygay and several other characters made out in the "Middle Finger" colony.

The last story in the trilogy really has no connection to the rest and as such is often reviewed poorly. Once I allowed my self to read it as a stand alone it was a much better story.

Great book on Tommy Bolin

Ive been a fan of Tommy Bolin Id say since around 1980 when I was about 15-16, when a friends older brother had a copy of TEASER that we played. Soon after I purchased PRIVATE EYES. Great songs, great guitar playing and great vocals. While listening to these albums back then, found out he had died an OD few years earlier,,,and most of all he was from SIOUX CITY, IOWA!! I was from Cedar Rapids. To hear a ROCK STAR from IOWA was unheard of! I was that much more interested. In my Sophmore year, a new student in school sat next to me. He had moved to CR from Sioux City. Of course I had to ask him about Tommy. He said he and friends would go to the parents house, and the proudly showed Tommy's room and personnal items.
Years and Years later...around 2000, I finally made my way to Sioux City. Found the Calvary cemetary and paid my respects to Tommy. The tombstone had grass covering it...probably mowed a week before. I had to brush it off. Kinda of sad. The place was very peaceful.
A few weeks ago, I dig out some Tommy CD's to play in the car. Havent played in about a year. You know, Im thinking...there should be a book about TOMMY!!?? I did a search..and I found this...released about 6 months ago.
Now, I read a lot of ROCK BIOGRAPHIES...kind of a hobby. I have to say this is one of the best Ive ever read. Coulndt put it down. I loved it. The ending is pretty suspicious. Makes you wonder...what did really happen that last nite in Miami??

Adam Roberts is Professor of 19th-century literature at London University. His novel JACK GLASS won the BSFA AWARD and JOHN W. A perfect SF novel

A perfect perfect SF novel: cerebral, intimate, funny, and finely wrought, with a fascinating premise that never exhausts itself. Roberts' writing is punchy and efficient, his insight is deep and relevant, his humor is endearing and will cause more than a few giggles to escape. Cyber-biological-sfilosphy with heady psychological realism and literary symbolism. And so vivid: the bathtub scene... the whisky scene... the Skyfall scene... all things I'm not likely to forget.

Very clearly a masterpiece, it is a shame there is no US publication for this book. It is a shame this book did not appear on more awards lists. Adam Roberts is a best kept not-really-a-secret who will get his place among the Stapledons and Besters and Sturgeons in due time.

It seems impossible to go wrong with an Adam Roberts book

I'm always one to search out my reading preferences by author rather than subject matter. If you're familiar with Adam Roberts, you have a good idea of what to expect with this novel. And it won't disappoint in the least. It's one of his better efforts.

If you've never read Adam Roberts before, you may or may not like his style and exaggerated way of writing about a given subject or theme, but if you do like it, it's truly rewarding. There's nobody else out there that writes like him. I really envy the person who has never picked up an Adam Roberts book before and is about to fall into a near bottomless pit of wonder and discovery.

SF of the highest level

On the day I am writing this, this book has only one other review. Which is a shame, this is truly SF of the highest level.

The basic premise (AI + animal merge) is new and convincingly done. Writing is poetic and humorous, and full of imagery.
The scene of the town full of refugees camping on pavements and in front yards will stay with me until I see it for real 20-30 years from now.

Not His Best Work

In terms of Reynolds work, I found this to be his weakest. To me it feels like he was just trying to make it through before a deadline, or the publishers were pushing him to finish. There were an unusual amount of devices used to move the story, and at one point near the end, I would swear if I didn't know better that either an editor added or changed the story, or the publisher forced a glaringly obvious device that made absolutely no sense in terms of science. (A ship was a day out from a planet and the idea was that they didn't want to enter the atmosphere to they were braking in a straight line of approach to their direct path at the planet... at a least one gee of thrust. The reality is they could have braked at an angle to their approach and instead of stopping short, just gone wide of it. The story required they go to the planet, but it was just too contrived in how he managed it.) Also the elephant thing was way too over done. Also there was so much political correctness in this series it got preachy at times. The books totally left out any reference to things that might have happened in North American and Europe, as if space exploration only ever happened by Africans and Asians, and perhaps some Russians; totally ignoring much of what is currently happening. But that is a complaint about the whole of this 'Blue Remembered Earth' series. Bottom line is that this was the worst book of his I read, and honestly towards the end (remember the trying to avoid the planet stuff I was talking about), it was very hard to finish. I did so that I could wrap up the series, but it was tough.

A sad and disappointing ending to an otherwise great trilogy. After months of anticipation, I was shocked at the poor quality of Poseidon's Wake. The emotional melodrama destroyed any enjoyment, and I couldn't bring myself to read past the 80% point as the book just drained the energy and interest right out of me. Definitely do not recommend, particularly if you've read Blue Remembered Earth and On the Steel Breeze, which were both excellent - reading this final installment in the trilogy will be a huge let-down.

it really seems like Alastair Reynolds is just phoning it in somewhat

At this point, it really seems like Alastair Reynolds is just phoning it in somewhat. Rather than the intricate and interesting plot, characters, and universe I've come to expect from novels like Revelation Space, Poseidon's Wake, like the rest of the trilogy, offers a disjointed and ultimately confused narrative presented by flat and relatively uninteresting characters. Still, it does not fail to provide an acceptable read, and despite my disappointment I made it through to the end without giving up.

Turgenev's greatest play

A reviewer before me said Turgenev came in the footsteps of the other great Russians. He might have been after Gogol, whom was the first master of fiction to turn to realism, but he was basically a frontrunner of both Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky (and Chekhov). At Gogol's death in 1852 Turgenev wrote an eulogy on Gogol and published the short-story cycle "A Sportsman's Sketches", and was banished to his estate. After this he went abroad and spent most of his time in Paris, where he more than anybody made Russian literature known to the outside world. His greatest novels were "A Nest of Gentlefolk", "On the Eve" and of course "Fathers and Sons". "A Month in the Country" is a pleasant and amusing play of the day, and his very best. One that later also highly inspired Chekhov. Further reading recommended: "The Essential Turgenev".

Turgenev's skill shines through

This is not a dramatic masterpiece, but anyone who appreciates Turgenev will benefit from it. I was motivated to read this play in preparation for its performance by the United Players of Vancouver next month.

In the footsteps of other such amazing Russian authors comes Turgenev, and his wonderfully written play 'A Month in the Country.' If you love Russian literature of this time period, and you like Love triangles, and plays, then this story can not go wrong.
