A classic science fiction "what if..." story
By Lee A. Hart
It all begins with a simple invention -- "slow glass", an improved version of regular glass that's better and stronger. Plus, its refractive index is so high that light travels much more slowly through it, allowing thinner lenses.

But, every improvement comes with unintended consequences. Windshields made of slow glass are incredibly stong; but images seen through them are slightly delayed, causing judgement errors and crashes. Efforts to improve or capitalize on effect this cause further surprises. In the end, this "simple" invention completely revolutionizes society!

The story is told from the inventor's perspective, who sees technological advancements as fundamentally "good", even when they turn out to have huge consequences -- things that create a dystopian future that no one would consider good. The story is a thought provoking one; how can we balance the benefits of a new technology against its potential for harm?

Other days, other eyes - Time travel by glass !!
By John Gardner
The discovery that a super toughened glass, first used in car windshields, actually delays the passage of light, is an intriguing concept for a s.f. story. Bob Shaw uses the "slow glass" to paint many different scenarios as to how this discovery changes the world for many different people. From its use as a window on different worlds (leave a large thick pane of glass, the thicker the glass the longer the light takes to pass through, beside a beautifull view for a couple of months/years then sell it to a householder - instant picture window) but beware glass is two way !! Say a crime is commited in a room with "slow glass" the cops take away the window and, after a period of time, the crime is replayed just like a movie. The possibilities are endless. A well crafted and enjoyable book by a much loved and sadly deceased author, one of my favourites.

A fix-up too far?
By flying-monkey
Bob Shaw's short stories about 'slow glass', were carefully crafted, moving and elegant. Unfortunately, this brilliance was somewhat subverted by the conversion of those stories into novel form.
Whereas the themes of the stories are centred around memory and loss, the novel turns this on its head with a recycled plot about the inventor who accidentally destroys the world. In the novel's case, the basic idea is almost entirely ripped off Asimov's 'The Dead Past', in which a technology is unleashed on the world which allows everyone to spy on everyone else. In Shaw's novel, Alban Garrod's invention of a new form of glass which slows light, results eventually in the government deploying ubiquitous slow glass dust, turning everything into a potential surveillance device.
The emotional development of the novel is also poor, not to say thunderingly misogynistic (a trait to be found in many of Shaw's novels of this period). Alban Garrod is held back by his nagging wife, Esther, whose father initially provided him with seed capital. He finds freedom with a beautiful, compliant, and vaguely oriental-looking secretary, while Esther is left blinded by an accident at his home laboratory. This blindness means she is able to hold on to Garrod and force him to act as her eyes, by making him wear a pair of slow glass 'lenses' which she can then wear the next day, so he is almsost literally forced to live in the past. It is all very heavy-handed and unpleasant, and there are similar strains of misogyny in other Shaw novels, especially 'Orbitsville'. It is odd, because I had never noticed this in his short pieces, and it unfortunately tends to lessen my appreciation of Shaw as a writer.
Despite all this, there is an intriguingly poetic technology at the centre of this novel, and some insightful commentary on the politics of surveillance and privacy, and you still get the excellent original short stories included as 'sidelights' to the main plot.

Not another imitation of Tolkien
By Kilian85710
I fell in love with JRR Tolkien in the mid-1960s. I've read many imitators, but not until reading this book did I find his equal. The book was published in 1954, 10 years before I read Tolkien. I don't know whether the two ever met or corresponded, and one is definitely not imitating the other. Instead, they both drank deeply of the same sources: the Norse eddas, and fashioned a contemporary version of that intoxicating draft. Tolkien has a softer, gentler approach to the source material. Anderson is harsher and sharper. Of the two, IMHO Anderson is closer to the originals.

If you like Tolkien and want to read someone who belongs on the same shelf by right of his own merit and isn't a poor imitation, I recommend this book highly.

An OK Read
By Grandpa S
Written in the narrative style. Little real character development; predictable throughout despite the fact there were ample opportunities to delve into the characters and expand their one dimensional profiles. Story was interesting and had some twists that should have been further expanded. All in all, worth the price, but not more than the minimal amount paid for an e-book.

Amazon.com Review
A shipwreck in the South Seas, a palm-tree paradise where a mad doctor conducts vile experiments, animals that become human and then "beastly" in ways they never were before--it's the stuff of high adventure. It's also a parable about Darwinian theory, a social satire in the vein of Jonathan Swift (Gulliver's Travels), and a bloody tale of horror. Or, as H. G. Wells himself wrote about this story, "The Island of Dr. Moreau is an exercise in youthful blasphemy. Now and then, though I rarely admit it, the universe projects itself towards me in a hideous grimace. It grimaced that time, and I did my best to express my vision of the aimless torture in creation." This colorful tale by the author of The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, and The War of the Worlds lit a firestorm of controversy at the time of its publication in 1896.

Perhaps Wells' Finest Novel
By Gary F. Taylor
Although it is less often read than such Wells novels as THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, the basic story of THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU is very well known through several extremely loose film adaptations. Pendrick, a British scientist, is shipwrecked--and by chance finds himself on an isolated island where Dr. Moreau and his assistant Montgomery are engaged in a series of experiments. They are attempting to transform animals into manlike beings.

Wells, a social reformer, was a very didactic writer, and his novels reflect his thoughts and theories about humanity. Much of Wells writing concerns (either directly or covertly) social class, but while this exists in MOREAU it is less the basic theme than an undercurrent. At core, the novel concerns the then-newly advanced theory of natural selection--and then works to relate how that theory impacts man's concept of God. Wells often touched upon this, and in several novels he broaches the thought that if mankind evolved "up" it might just as easily evolve "down," but nowhere in his work is this line of thought more clearly and specifically seen than here.

At times Wells' determination to teach his reader can overwhelm; at times it can become so subtle that it is nothing short of absolutely obscure. But in THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, Wells achieves a perfect balance of the two extremes, even going so far as to balance the characters in such a way that not even the narrator emerges as entirely sympathetic. It is a remarkable achievement, and in this sense I consider MOREAU possibly the best of Wells work: the novel is as interesting for the story it tells as it is for still very relevant themes it considers.

It is also something of an oddity among Wells work, for while Wells often included elements of horror and savagery in his novels, MOREAU is not so much horrific as it is disturbingly gruesome and occasionally deliberately distasteful. This is not really a book than you can read and then put away: it lingers in your mind in a most unsettling way. Strongly recommended.

missing the Introduction
By Gary Johnson
This review is for the Dover Thrift Edition of THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU.

The price is certainly attractive for this edition of H.G. Wells' classic short novel (just $2). However, you should be aware that this edition is missing the Introduction. Someone at Dover made a big mistake. The Introduction is part of the novel and it contains important information.

However, I'm guessing someone at Dover saw the Introduction ends with the name "Charles Edward Prendick" (as author of the introduction) and decided this wasn't written by H.G. Wells so it's expendable in a bare-bones edition. Not so fast. The introduction was indeed written by Wells. It's in the first person, with Charles Edward Prendick as the "I". Then for the remainder of the novel, Charles' uncle Edward is the narrator and central character.

Big mistake, Dover. This is supposedly an "unabridged" edition. However, the first two pages (the introduction) are missing. I did a quick search on Amazon of other editions of this novel, and all listings that have Amazon's LOOK INSIDE! feature include the introduction.

Wells novel: 5 stars, absolutely great!
Dover Thrift Edition: 1 star, unacceptable.

Avoid this edition.

A good in-between book
By A Customer
Admittedly, Anne's House of Dreams IS a pretty good book. Anne and Gilbert finally get married (FINALLY, after we've been waiting for the last four books) and go to Four Winds Harbor to spread their wings. They live in a cute little "house o' dreams" (hence the title) and meet all sorts of new people: Captian Jim, Miss Cornelia, Leslie, Owen Ford, etc., who are all, by the way, wonderfully characterized, as is L.M. Montgomery's signature.
The only real problems that I had with this book was that it had lost the flair of the other "Anne" books, and wasn't quite ready for the mischevious tinge that the following books, which are mainly about the Blythe children, bring with them. Like I said, kind of a bridge between the real Anne books and the books about her kids. I also missed the presence of the Avonlea people like Marilla, Diana, Mrs. Lynde, and so on. But for the most part, it met my expectations. You've got to remember that it had some pretty high standards that it's predecessors had set to live up to.

Pinter and the Theater of the Absurd
By John F. Rooney
In "The Birthday Party" sixtyish batty Meg and husband Petey live in a past-its-prime British seaside resort and run a seedy boarding house which has only one guest, a strange loner named Stanley whom Meg has grown too fond of. Two mysterious ill-boding strangers, Goldberg and McCann, show up and decide to give Stanley a birthday party when it isn't even his birthday. Lulu is a young neighbor who visits and regrets it. A toy drum becomes a disquieting prop.
Pinter, child of Beckett, sets up a bizarre situation. All of the people are weird, kooky, save Petey, and their behavior becomes grotesque. The party goes badly awry and gets into scary territory.
This is early Pinter, not top-drawer, in which he is groping his way toward the Pinteresque theater of the Absurd. He toned down his antics in some of his later, better works like "The Homecoming."
A Pinter play frequently presents:
1. Round-the-bend, barely functional, often disreputable characters living on the fringes of society, some criminal types
2. Commonplace, prosaic dialogue that is often funny, satiric, inane and Absurdist
3. A sense of nameless terror and menace, pending violence, a mystery, the surreal, and the unexpected
4. Often the motivation of some characters is unclear. We see people who are barely able to make it. Are they dumb, out of it, or puppets on a string?
Pinter keeps you interested by the plot. Where is he leading me? Why are these people doing these things? Nothing seems earthshaking
You step into his askew world and you're asking for trouble, and if you're adventurous, you are enjoying being toyed with.
Part of the charm of Pinter are his enigmatic plots. They're fun because he's going to tease you, to make you wonder.
This is a clever play, funny, off-beat and Absurdist, but not really much else. He's showing off, proving that he can pull off a stunt, but does it take a master dramatist just to play games? In this 1958 play one can see touches of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Albee's 1962 classic. Pinter was extremely influential.

Xeelee, by Stephen Baxter

Great science fiction with extensive following. The Xeelee Sequence is a series of novels and short stories by British science fiction author Stephen Baxter. The novels span several billions of years, describing the future expansion of Mankind, its war with its arch-nemesis (an alien race called the Xeelee), and the Xeelee's own war with dark matter entities called photino birds. The books that launched Stephen Baxter's career; the creation of one of the most astonishingly ambitious universes in SF's history: brought together in one astounding volume. Stephen Baxter's epic sequence of Xeelee novels was introduced to a new generation of readers with his highly successful quartet, Destiny's Children, published by Gollancz between 2003 and 2006. But the sequence of novels began with RAFT in 1991.From there it built into perhaps the most ambitious fictitious universe ever created. Beginning with the rise and fall of sub-quantum civilisations in the first nano-seconds after the Big Bang and ending with the heat death of the universe billions of years from now the series charts the story of mankinds epic war against the ancient and unknowable alien race the Xeelee.Along the way it examines questions of physics, the nature of reality, the evolution of mankind and its possible future. It looks not just at the morality of war but at the morality of survival and our place in the universe. This is a landmark in SF.

Certainly among the greatest works of imagination ever
By Cliente Amazon
I don't have words to define what Baxter's Xeelee saga encompasses. So I will try to say what it is not. It is not your ordinary space opera, in fact it is not an space opera at all, despite a war in space (and out of it) spanning the age of the universe. It is not a distopia or an utopia, despite depicting many societies with these traits. It is not military fiction even though militarism stamps its mark thorough the work. It is not hard sci-fi while being based on hard sci-fi premises. It is not a treatise on alien societies but it depicts a few of the most interesting and awe inspiring aliens I ever seen! Well, it transcends sci-fi, or, maybe, it defines what sci-fi is.

If I was to try to define it imperfectly I would say that the Xeelee saga is the amalgamation of David Brin's Uplift Series with Olaf Stapledon's Star Maker and Last and First Men, getting the best traits of each of these incredibly creative masters of sci-fi/philosophy. The sense of wonder we get when reading Sapledon's works is there. The vividness of Brin's depictions of strange extraterrestrial beings and that deep, deep past history our petty human minds can't comprehend is also there. I didn't read the Xeelee saga, I savored it. And I felt a hollow when it ended.

I can't recommend this book enough!

There is no limit to the author's imagination
By R. Ottero
(Reader, beware: English is not my native language and I have little formal training in it, as I pratically learned it reading books with a dictionary by my side. So, *do* expect spelling and grammar mistakes; I will gladly accept corrections and comments about these.)

It is very sad for me to rate this marvelous work with only 3 stars, but this rating system permits just an absolute, unified grade, so I will hopefully explain why I did it in the next lines.

Just for his imagination, this author deserves a 6 or 7 star, out of 5 :-) It is tremendously impressive his mental jumps, projections and general world building. This book brings the reader across several million years of history, with a plot that is not so easily guessed (except where the writer foreshadowed some things).

I think he was highly successful in creating a fascinanting world, daring to impose himself a huge challenge, in creating a plot that not only encompasses humanity evolution across eons but also includes some extraterrestrial races in it, taking great risks of losing his control of the flux of the events - but do not fear, the author did not fail!

Now, the things that I disliked to the point I feel myself unable to score above 3 in the rating.

1. To the appreciation of the Xeelee Universe, both books 1 & 3 are totally unnecessary! They do not add anything in its understanding, they are like side stories, that could easily be removed from the omnibus without any perceptible loss of context. They do not reference the main events of the Xeelee, except in a tangent way and only in book 3 (if my memory is not betraying myself). Book 1 and 3, albeit great books in themselves, should be catalogued as side stories to the Xeelee sequence, not essencial ones.

2. I felt that the book devoted excessive pages to character development, to the point of hindering the reading rhythm. It dedicated several pages to describe inner conflicts of some main characters, sometimes in a repetive fashion - in my opinion, that is. In this topic, I consider Arthur Clarke`s Rama I to be a perfect balance between character development and hard sci-fi plot weaving.

3. The writer explored several times the high-tech-society-losing-its-knowledges-and-restarting-anew theme, which annoyed me a little. It was correctly and coherently applied, but I felt that it made the plot kind of repetitive.

4. The writer`s style of describing his world sometimes is very frustrating, in which you have to read several chapters to begin to really understand the scenario, and a lot of times he simply dropped some concepts without further explanation, so the reader (at least myself) becomes kind of disoriented in trying to comprehend the events. He is the kind of writer that keeps the reader in the dark about certain things, letting him guessing what is really going on. Albeit this is a great writing tool, the author misused this plot device and the text sometimes got boring or unencouraging.

5. A lot of unnecessary descriptions, comments or `scenes` in the books. I like the writing school that says that if a line (or even a word) does not move the plot ahead, it should not exist. I had the impression that the author was very prolix in several passages, deviating from the main plot to describe events that, in the end, did not add anything to the history.

6. Particulary in book 4 but occurring in less degree in others, there are scientific descriptions that are not easily understood by laymen as myself and that are not explained in the plot. In the other hand, some simpler concepts were described at exhaustion in all books. I am not a complete layman in Physics, Astronomy or Cosmology, but of course I do not compare to a physicist - so, if I felt myself kind of lost in some scientific explanations, a total layman probably will be in a worse situation than me.

7. Again in book 4, in some passages the author acted as a tourist guide of the Universe, describing stars, galaxies and the like in a excess I did not appreciate. In fact, I skimmed some of these passages, as they were repetitive and anticlimactic.

Overall, I think the text could have used some revision and some restructuring.

In spite of these points I made, I recommend the book to any hard sci-fi fan, because of the author`s fantastic imagination.

Great writer, deserves reading !
By Mr. J. Speak
I love Baxter, and really think he is one of the most talented new generation of Sci fi writers. His 'science' is much more believable than many other writers, and I like his BIG perspective on things. Its scale is in light years and, often involving concepts outside of our univers and time-scale, leaving you humbled, and always thoughtful of our tiny little planet, and how vulnerable it is.... highly recommended.

A fun read and an excellent cause!
By Rob Stauffer
As an American, I have to admit that I was unfamiliar with most of the British celebrities who contributed to this book. However, because I'm a lover of all things Dr Who, and because the proceeds of the book go to a highly admirable cause, I decided to buy it. I'm so glad that I did! I found that not knowing anything about the contributors in no way detracted from the fun of reading the book. The enjoyment lay in sharing in the memories of other fans, reliving the fun of seeing favorite episodes for the first time, and picking up quite a few insider tidbits. I couldn't put the book down once I had started it.

In addition to the above, all proceeds from the sale of the book go to Alzheimer's Research UK. As someone who has seen the horrors of this illness in my own family, and frankly, lives in dread of one day having to deal with it personally, I would have paid twice the price without a qualm. This book is well worth the price. It's a hugely entertaining read that profits an extremely good cause. Win/Win!

Buy This for a Serious Fan
By Jessica
I bought this for our daughter's 17th birthday, thus this is her review:

Behind The Sofa is a labor of love, it's true, and that really shows in this collection of stories.

Sadly, however, such labors do not always bear the most perfect of fruits. Behind The Sofa is great for a knock-down, drag-out, die-hard Whovian, but please don't get this for your ten-year-old. The stories are interesting, even occasionally funny, but many of the anecdotes seem to have a rambling, aimless quality that doesn't sit well with the reader. Every word will be appreciated by someone who can spell Rexicoricofallapatorius in one go, but if you're the kind of guy/gal that goes to a WhoCon *not* dressed as the original Cyberman, a lot of the references will be lost on you.

That doesn't mean you can't appreciate them though! Even though I haven't seen every episode, and still feel a vague sort of guilt for my silence after "Would you like a Jelly Baby?" jokes, this was a fairly entertaining read. I felt immersed, even if I didn't always understand what they were talking about, in the love of the series and the people and the idea of Who.

Would I rather have this than a box-set of all things Tennant, though? No.

Elegant, intimate gem of a book
By Robert W. Getz
Whether or not you're a novice to all things Whovian or a superfan with shelves of what are now a dizzying amount of books on the subject, this beautiful and elegantly produced tome will make you feel as if you're sitting in a roomful of the most ideal fans imaginable (and, indeed, they are) as they swap stories about their favorite subject, the now 50-year old institution known as 'Doctor Who.' All of the memories that are shared here (many of them by people involved with the program's production) are intimate, funny, and touching by turns and are perfectly complemented by the beautiful illustrations by Ben Morris. It's a compact gem of a book that can be dipped into anywhere and the reader will be rewarded with warmth and wit. It was some time ago when I realized that what was so affecting to me about the show's template was that The Doctor inevitably finds himself in a situation that is beyond hopeless, perhaps beyond even the glimmer of a possibility of hope - and yet, he does not give up. As all of the royalties from this lovely book go directly to Alzheimer's Research UK, it is perhaps one of the few Doctor Who books that, in however small a way, allows us to fight a little of that battle for him. Well worth your time and attention.

yes!
By TOM CORBETT
in some respects even better than 'hyperion'. though not as challenging a read. something akin to the wizard of oz. (a journey). if youve enjoyed hyperion, you must read this!

as an aside, what is truth? truth is 'understanding' and is a form of purity. light is 'purity', have you ever noticed that? clear natural untrammeled light is purity. at the same time light penetrates darkness and reveals things hidden. mystery itself is hiddeness, but light reveals that which was hidden (a child is born). therefore there is a correspondence between truth and light. there was a great deal of purity in this book, call it virtue.
light knows itself (it sees itself mirrored), but darkness does not know itself, for in knowing oneself one sees weeknesses, strengths and failings, but without seeing these things, how would any form of virtue/purity be possible (for we would not know what to work on in ourselves). and without virtue, how would any form of coherent understanding/truth, be possible... it simply wouldnt. 'simplicity' can be a form of darkness, it is so clear, that it is obscure. simple things need to be broken down in order to be understood. God forbid, i do not say that darkness is bad, it has its place which is very important, but only that light is superior.

love, snow-flake. xxx

Great Story!
By A. McMullen
This is a great story with well crafted characters. It has the lyrical words of high fantasy combined with some truely awful horror that works very well. Christine is a living in Berlin with her artist lover, Jude, who is being sponsored by millionaire Mandy Z. Mandy Z sponsors 4 artists per year and heavily supports the arts, however no one likes him and they don't know why. Mandy Z is also a madman who has been killing fairies for their bones.

Christine is haunted by the tragic, accidental death of her parents years before. Although she survived the accident, she has been in pain ever since. Suddenly, she starts remembering her life in Berlin when she was a small child and how her best friend May disappeared one day. Through an accident, Christine wakes up by the Autumn Castle and discovers that May is queen of the fairies. May comes into the Real World and falls in love with Christine's Jude. Suddenly, a woman who is used to having everything wants something that she knows she cannot have..

Meanwhile back at the Autumn Castle time is running out. The worlds are only aligned for a season. The witch Hexebart, holds the queens magic and won't return it. Hexebart is convinced that May killed the True Queen years before and will do anything to hurt her.

The stories is told in four voices: the mad self proclaimed fairy hunter, Queen May who is torn between her duty to her kingdom, her oldest friendship and being in love for the first time, Christine who is fascinated with the Autumn Castle and the angry witch Hexebart. It's a story about love, betrayal and murder. It works very well.

This is the first novel I've read by this author and can't wait to read more!

Beautiful and involving
By Somni
Christine Starlight lives in a world of constant physical pain and memories, a weighty reminder of the tragedy she survived and struggles with on a daily basis: a hit and run accident that claimed the lives of both her parents. But as Autumn reintroduces itself to Berlin, she finds memories of another childhood tragedy surfacing. She begins to recall the disappearance of her young friend, May, long presumed to be abducted and murdered.

May soon returns to Christine's life, and soon becomes tangled in the lives around Christine as well. She is now Mayfridh, Queen of the realm of German fairies, Ewigkreis. The "Real World" and Ewigkreis are briefly aligned, allowing for crossing between in the meantime, and soon May grows infatuated with Christine's budding artist lover, Jude. Just as easily, Christine finds herself growing attached to Ewigkreis, the one place that allows her respite from her physical pain.

The tightly-knit story maintains a good pace; it starts out languid as the characters and background are introduced, then picks up into a flurry as winter, and the end of the alignment between fairy and real worlds, looms upon them. It is seen from four rather unique perspectives: Christine, the unassuming and perpetually self-doubting bookstore clerk that lets herself live in the shadow of her lover; Mayfridh, the beautiful Queen accustomed to getting her way who unwittingly gambles with the safety of Ewigkreis to feed her interest in the Real World and Jude; Immanuel Z (Mandy Z), the twisted fairy hunter that seeks the bones of fairies to complete his sculpture that he wishes to bring to life; and Hexebart, the witch of Ewigkreis that holds the magic of the realm hostage while refusing to acknowledge the adopted Mayfridh as sovereign after the disappearance of her parents.

It successfully captures the flavor of a fairy tale in its rich story -- it is equally capable of being dark and grisly as it is lush and fantastical. This also leads to a level of simplicity in the characters and even the story itself, that at times felt unfulfilling. For example, there is no struggle for a human's mind to comprehend the existence of fairies, as it can be brushed away with an easy spell. The translation of the modern world to a fairy is also easily explained away by another quick spell. Love happens simply and without fanfare, which can be charming or anti-climatic.

Overall, however, it was an engaging tale that was easy to be drawn into and stay involved until the end.

beautiful adult fairy tale
By A Customer
Christine Starlight has never gotten over the deaths of her pop icon parents who were killed in an accident by an underage driver. She lives in Berlin with her lover, the artist Jude, who just won a fellowship from billionaire sculpture Immanuel Zweigler to perfect his work. His host also hunts down fairies, captures them, and drops them in an acid vat to use their bones in his current sculpture he Bone Wife which moves thanks to fairy magic which resides inn their bones after death.

Christine reunites with her childhood friend Mayfridth, who was abducted by fairies, converted into one of them, and now is the Queen of the magical realm of the German fairies Ewigkreis. Mayfridth has returned to the mundane world to visit Christine, who recently had accidentally journeyed into the fairy realm. Christine realizes May has fallen in love with Jude, but also knows the queen must return to her home because her people need her. Immanuel wants her royal skeleton and is waiting for the right time to kill her. Immanuel enters Ewigkreis to murder the fairies; Christine must stop this serial killer who now has kidnapped Mayfridth.

Kim Wilkins has created a magical realm populated by wonderful beings who seem real as if the author has visited the land of fairy. Readers will cherish Christine, a kind, loyal, and caring soul, who deserves the best, not what she has gotten. The Queen's advisor plays a critical but secondary role and his shapeshifting skills to enable him to turn into a fox, crow, or bear and that also seems genuine and adds to the feel that this fantasy tale actually happened. Readers will be swept into THE AUTUMN CASTLE by this beautiful adult fairy tale.

True West, by Sam Shepard

Comedy / 3m, 1f / Int. Recently revived at New York's Circle in the Square, where Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly alternated playing the roles of the brothers, this American classic explores alternatives that might spring from the demented terrain of the California landscape. Sons of a desert dwelling alcoholic and a suburban wanderer clash over a film script. Austin, the achiever, is working on a script he has sold to producer Sal Kimmer when Lee, a demented petty thief, drops in. He pitches his own idea for a movie to Kimmer, who then wants Austin to junk his bleak, modern love story and write Lee's trashy Western tale. "Shepard's masterwork.... It tells us a truth, as glimpsed by a 37 year old genius." - New York Post "It's clear, funny, naturalistic. It's also opaque, terrifying, surrealistic. If that sounds contradictory, you're on to one aspect of Shepard's winning genius; the ability to make you think you're watching one thing while at the same time he's presenting another." - San Francisco Chronicle

About the Author
Reader ALFRED MOLINA stars as Levin in the acclaimed film version of Tolstoy's classic. A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, he has appeared in many films, including "The Da Vinci Code" and "Chocolat".

From AudioFile
Sam Shepard rose from the fringe theater of '60s counterculture to become a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and movie star. His plays explore the deep roots of competition and violence in the American psyche. Take TRUE WEST, a black comedy about two adult brothers sojourning in their mother's house while she's away. One brother writes screenplays; the other commits petty larcenies. They hate each other. They fight. They might even have killed each other had not mom returned from Alaska in the nick of time. The Oscar-nominated Alfred Molina and Fran Guinan, who appeared in the celebrated Steppenwolf Theater production of the play, pour on the testosterone in this vigorous audio version, taped before an appreciative audience. Director Simonson keeps the pace brisk but orchestrates the tempo masterfully from hot to cold and back again. Charlotte Rae as the mother does a wonderful little star turn at the end. Y.R. Great Play
By A Customer
in True West , Sam Shepard's method is a kind of allegorical realism, where the use of everyday items such as golf clubs, houseplants and toasters is not at all intended to suggest us reality.
In this play, Shepard illustrates the duality of human personality, and our primitive instincts for violence against the unavoidable family ties that usually discourage an individual from acting as wanted. In this case, two brothers, Austin and Lee, who experience the typical good boy vs. bad boy sibling rivalry unexpectedly meet. As a result a series of emotional angry outbreaks take place as Austin can't defined himself: Is he frightened of Lee or does he admire his brother's willingness to break the rules? Austin graduated college, got married, has a family to whom he will return soon. He is disciplined, striving and ambitious. Quite the opposite, Lee is uneducated, violent, envious and resentful.
Austin, a Hollywood screenwriter, is housesitting his mother's home while she is on a sightseeing trip to Alaska. His brother, Lee, has appeared all of a sudden and wants to share the house. Lee is a tramp and small-time criminal, who has just spent the previous six months in the Mojave Desert with their alcoholic father.
The filthy and foul Lee invites Austin's Hollywood producer for a round of golf, and ends up selling him on a story idea for a modern Western film, totally displacing his hard-working brother, who as a result crumples into a chaotic and violent wreck.
Shepard's focus is not on verisimilitude, but on the intensity of the conflict that is revealed. For instance, the main action in the play is the reduction of the mother's neat household into a garbage dump. This includes the destruction of Austin's typewriter with a golf club, vomiting into the desiccated remains of a philodendron and squashing fresh toast into the linoleum. Additionally, Lee had stolen several toasters from the neighborhood, "There's gonna be a general lack of toast in the neighborhood this morning..." he says.
In various occasions, Austin seemed to be afraid of his brother as he winds up doing what Lee asks him, such as lending him his car or typing the script of his imaginary screenplay. However, what Austin mostly seems to fear is not Lee, but his own deep-set, self-destructive impulses as he lives out the paranoiac nightmare of being displaced by his brother. "You think you are the only one in the brain department?" Lee questions him.
When Lee is dictating Austin the lines of his screenplay, he narrates the story of two characters that are running after each other -- actually referring to themselves. He says: "The one who is chasing, doesn't know where the other one is taking him, the one who is being chased, doesn't know where he is going." The two brothers are constantly competing with each other; even though, they head in opposite directions in life. Austin has a career and a family while Lee doesn't but he has the ability to break the rules, his brother strictly follows.
Towards the end of the play, both brothers who are very intoxicated from having being drinking alcohol the night through, start to act both wild and silly at the same time. Under the influence of alcohol, repressions and taboos are forgotten and one acts and says things that would not normally do. As in Fool for Love, the protagonists confess their deepest fears and feelings when drunk, in True West, Austin reveals how he feels lost and lonely despite of his accomplishments, he says:" there's nothing real down here... streets look like a postcard..." He is living his dreams (he is becoming a playwright, has a wife, etc) but he seems not to get acquainted with his reality and does not know anymore what is real and what is not.
Then, decides to "try" the toasters and make some toasts, which Lee steps over and smashes on the floor as he criticizes him: "you're making that toast like salvation or something...I don't want any toast..." to what Austin replies: "...I love the smell of toast...it's salvation...". While this argument goes on, their mother comes back doesn't surprising much when finding out the disaster her sons had made to her house. But, she tells them they'll both end up in the same dessert.
At the end of the play the phrases: "...Something to keep me in touch" and "It's easy to go out of touch" made me realize that one must hold onto something that will keep one focused in order to go on -- either focus on one's reality or on one's dream(s). Everyone needs that toast of salvation!

"...when something's been said a thousand times before..."
By Andrew McCaffrey
I didn't like TRUE WEST. But there's nothing wrong with it that could be blamed on this particular production of the play. The actors are good considering the flimsy material that they have to work with. The music is used sparingly, but is very effective at setting the scene. I just couldn't get over the shallow development of the characters and a script that was constantly attempting to be deeper than it was.
The story has one location. Two brothers sit in their mother's house, yelling and screaming at each other until the parental unit herself appears near the end of the play. I like the idea behind the story, which is to put two people in a confined area and see what happens to them. Unfortunately, most of what we learn about these two is quite dull. One brother is a moderately successful screenwriter while the other makes his living as a petty burglar. I had hoped that we wouldn't get soppy scenes of each brother revealing that he secretly envied the other's lifestyle, but that's exactly what we get here. The successful brother is the one without good people skills and the streetwise brother really wants to make it big, but doesn't have the proper school learning to do so. You've probably seen this sort of thing played out in films, television and theatre thousands of times before; I know I have. The problem here is that there is virtually nothing else going on in the script to distract from the banality of the characters.
The humor comes across as being forced -- very forced -- especially in the second half. The play is billed as a tragicomedy, but the transition from the funny scenes to the dramatic is shockingly jarring. You can almost hear the goofy, "Hey, this is funny!" music in the background every time a supposedly lighthearted moment comes up. It's possibly attempting to be a black comedy, but I just can't really see it that way. People who moan and whine and complain constantly could very well be hilarious, but I just wasn't amused by them. The comedy didn't flow naturally from the drama, and the drama just hung limply by itself out in No Man's Land.
If you already know that you like the play, then you will probably enjoy this particular staging of it. The various sound effects and music are used in moderation, and are very efficient at placing the audience right inside that house. The script does have one or two nice lines about the falseness of the Hollywood lifestyle and the boundary between the life that we see in pop culture compared to the reality that we drive through every day. They aren't the most original observations that you'll ever hear, but the wording of them and the acting of the principals really make those short sequences work. It's a pity that the rest of the script wasn't as sharp as these moments, because they really had me longing to hear more.
At one point near the end, the hardened brother (who is attempting to write a screenplay, just like his sibling) asks, "What do you call it when something's been said a thousand times before?" The answer that he receives is, of course, "a cliché". And unfortunately that sums up almost this entire production. Other dramas that have utilized these rather basic elements haven't made the mistake of not including anything else. But TRUE WEST is just one big cliché.
