The four novels of the Skylark sequence by the father of modern space opera
This is an ideal sample introduction to the fantastic work of one of the most influential authors of the pulp era. Working with legendary Astounding Science Fiction editor John W. Campbell, E. E. Smith revolutionized space opera, giving it many of the tropes still evident today. This volume reprints the four novels of his classic Skylark series—The Skylark of Space, Skylark Three, Skylark of Valeron, and Skylark DuQuesne.

Nostalgic read
By William C. Swett
I very much enjoyed these Doc Smith novels as a teen and decided to read them again in ebook form. With the exception of a handful of typos across four novels, the ebook edition appears faithful to the original and is a convenient format for back to back reading of the entire series. The Skylark of Space is a classic early 20th century space adventure, with a Great Gatsby feel and a roaring 20's setting. Skylark Three and Skylark of Valeron go back to the well for two more adventures, launching the protagonists out of the galaxy and across the known universe. Written 20 years after the first book, these two see the effect of the author's additional writing experience and the advancement of technology from 1928 to 1948. Skylark Duquesne, published after the author's death, again almost 20 years after what was a tidily wrapped up series, is forced to start with some reverse engineering of the series end to open the way for a new adventure. With the author in the grave, Skylark Duquesne blurs the lines between good and evil, ending abruptly with the previously cold-blooded villain saving humanity and escaping with his girlfriend and the most powerful space ship in the universe to establish his benevolent dictatorship in a remote galaxy. I think I enjoyed the series more as a teen, without the critical eye of an additional 35 years of life experience. Still a good read, especially for fans of vintage space opera or for nostalgia's sake.

The Full Story
By Arthur W Jordin
E.E. 'Doc' Smith SF Gateway Omnibus (2013) is a SF omnibus of the Skylark series. It contains The Skylark of Space, Skylark Three, Skylark of Valeron and Skylark DuQuesne.
This series follows the interstellar adventures of a chemist and a venture capitalist. It takes them far into space and introduces them to alien beings. Many are humanoid, but others are not, and many are friendly, but others are not. Their spaceships keep getting bigger and more powerful and they accumulate vast stores of knowledge.
They encounter and fight many villains in outer space. Yet their worst enemy is a Terran with a personal peeve against the two.
The Skylark of Space (1928) is the first novel in this series. Seaton has been working on a container of heavy metal waste. He separates out several valuable metallic elements, but an unknown metal remains. Then he learns that the metal is an almost stable transuranic element. He calls the element "X" metal.
In his processing, Seaton has a small accident with the waste. While electrolyzing the solution, a little waste spills into the copper steam-bath. He snatchers up the beaker, but the heavy bath plows through his lab apparatus and disappears out the window at high speed.
The accident makes an exciting bit of gossip in the Lab. The next day, Dick tries to recreate the incident with a piece of copper wire, but nothing happens. The Lab folk begin to talk about his overstrained mind and go back to work.
Seaton considers the circumstances surrounding the incident and decides that the main difference was that a device designed by DuQuesne was not operating during the second try. He waits until DuQuesne turns on his device and notices that the characteristic color change appears on the copper wire. He puts an electric current through the wire and it goes through the brick wall.
Seaton talks to Dorothy after the first incident. She is supportive, but doesn't really understand. After the second incident, Dick goes to Crane with the story. Martin advises that they purchase the solution, so Seaton returns it to the chief clerk for auction.
After buying the solution, Martin immediately forms a new corporation: the Seaton-Crane Company, Engineers. Then they call the first meeting of the board. Afterward, Seaton starts analyzing the properties of the unknown element.
Skylark Three (1948) is the second novel in this series. DuQuesne announces a long absence from Earth to World Steel executive Brookings. DuQuesne is going to find another species who have more knowledge than the Osnomians. He warns Brookings to leave Seaton alone while he is gone.
Shortly thereafter, DuQuesne disappears from Earth. Even Seaton's object-compass cannot find him. But Dick has other problems to occupy his mind.
Seaton has developed a zone of force that blocks all matter and energy. Its like hiding in a hole and then pulling the hole inside itself. The zone is a great shield, but Seaton cannot work through it.
Then Dunark and Sitar came to Earth in the Kondal to ask their Overlord for aid. A force from another star in the Green System has invaded Osnome. They want salt and X-metal to destroy the planet of the attackers.
Seaton readily agrees to supply them with the necessary materiel, but Dorothy and Margaret object to the destruction of the planet. Seaton and Crane load the salt into the Kondal and -- with their wives and Shiro -- lead Dunark and Sitar to the planet with the X-metal.
After slicing off a great deal of X-metal with the zone of force, the Skylark Two and the Kondal go toward Osnome. Nearing the Green System, they encounter a strange spaceship that opens fire at both vessels. The stranger's beams are strong enough to penetrate all their screens and the zone of force is activated.
Skylark of Valeron (1949) is the third novel in this series. DuQuesne and his aide Loring are in the Violet nearing the detection zones around the Fenachrone system. Loring is watching the Fenachrone engineer work on the rebuilt engine. DuQuesne notices his observations and tells him that the engineer has only a few minutes of freedom remaining.
Four hours prior to entering the detection zone, DuQuesne tightens the forces on the prisoner and injects a powerful drug in him. It takes seven milligram to put the alien into a hypnotic state. With that dosage, he will live barely long enough to reach the zone.
DuQuesne searches out the few remaining secrets within the prisoner's mind. Then he puts the prisoner to work making two motorized copies of Loring and himself. DuQuesne and Loring hide within the Fenachrone spacesuits hanging near the airlock.
A Fenachrone scoutship answers the alarm and beams the two dummies into ash. The prisoner is taken into the scout. When he is through the inner lock, DuQuesne releases an odorless and colorless gas from a container on the outside of his spacesuit.
Once everybody onboard is dead, DuQuesne lets Loring and himself into the ship. Loring sets the Violet on a course staying within the zone while DuQuesne retrieves essential information from the mind of the dead commanding officer. Then they stage a fit of space madness that ruins all the communications gear except a keyboard device.
The Fenachrone high command orders all ships to form a screen around the home world. This brings a battleship into the area. So DuQuesne and Loring take the battleship. Then the Fenachrone planet explodes violently.
Skylark DuQuesne (1965) is the fourth novel in this series. Seaton and Dot are having a dispute in the living room. She thinks he is working too hard. He knows that she is right, but doesn't know how to do about it. His job is starting to be less stressful, but is still nowhere near peaceful.
Then they have eight visitors. Fodan starts the conversation by addressing Seaton as the Overlord. Dick corrects him and Fodan changes the title to Coordinator.
The eight tell Seaton that he has made a mistake. The stasis bubble around the seven immaterial intellects and DuQuesne will not last as long as he supposed. Indeed, it will probably be destroyed by interstellar gas and dust within a year.
Seaton does some calculations on the local brain and agrees with their conclusions. He has Martin and Peg brought over as projections and starts planning defenses. Dot and Peg go out to the kitchen while the males discuss their options.
The discussion comes up with an immediate defensive effort. Drasnik and Sacner design a sixth order message to attract the attention of persons having new scientific knowledge. They say that it will be ignored by anyone not sympathetic with their cause.
Meanwhile, the confinement fails when it hits a patch of gas. DuQuesne immediately asks One if he can tell where they are. One tells him that it doesn't really matter. DuQuesne has a different opinion. One provides him with a body and a ship equivalent to the Skylark Three.
These tales are SF classics. This volume is a full publication of the Skylark series. The novels were short, so the complete set can fit within a reasonably sized book.
The initial novel in this series was the author's first attempt to write science fiction. With the help of friends, he finished the book in 1920. For eight years, he submitted it to various venues, finally seeing it published within Amazing Stories in 1928. A sequel -- Skylark Three -- was published in Amazing Stories in 1930 and Skylark of Valeron was published in Astounding in 1934.
During this period, the author also produced several other works, including Spacehounds of the IPC and the start of the Lensman series. The first books were not published until after World War II, when the paper shortage ended and the market for SF novels flourished.
The last work in this series was not published until 1965 in Worlds of If. The book version was released a year later. The author's fans were enthusiastic.
Although dated in many ways, the stories are very interesting reads. The most serious flaw is the total dismissal of velocity limits. The spaceships in this series accelerate to multiples of the speed of light without any discussion of faster-than-light mechanisms. Since the author was a chemist, this omission was understandable in 1920.
He later realized his error and wrote tales staying within the lightspeed limit. Yet his fans didn't care and asked for more Skylark stories. Even with this and other problems, these novel are still worth reading.
Highly recommended for Smith fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of interstellar and intergalactic travel, alien cultures, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!
