About the Author
J.M. Barrie was born in 1860, the ninth of ten children of hard-working parents in Scotland's jute-weaving industry. Fascinated by stories of her own life told him by his mother, he was determined to write, finding work on the Nottingham Journal after graduating from Edinburgh University. In 1885, he moved to London as a freelance writer and successfully sold the Auld Licht Idylls, a volume based on his mother's tales. By the time Peter Pan opened on the London stage in 1904, Barrie had written more than thirty novels and plays, many autobiographical and several of them major hits such as The Little Minister, Quality Street and The Admirable Crichton. Knighted and awarded the Order of Merit he continued writing into old age. He died in 1937.

Peter Pan's Deathless Birth-Tale

Sir James Barrie first wrote of Peter Pan in "The Little White Bird," published in 1902. This was followed by the play, "Peter Pan," in 1904, which Barrie then adapted into book form as "Peter and Wendy" (sort of the home video edition of play before the days of home video). In 1906, the six Peter Pan chapters of "Little White Bird" were published under the title "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" with illustrations by Arthur Rackham.

If you're more interested in Barrie's modus operandi, his development of the Peter Pan mythos from his relationship with Llewelyn Davies family and their boys, "The Little White Bird" is an essential source. "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" is Peter Pan with much of the autobiographical sentimentality scissored out. While this eliminates some maudlin overtones, it also removes interesting details such as Pilkington, the prototype of Captain Hook, whose "shadow was all over the gardens."

The only edition I have for comparison's sake is the Weathervane facsimile, published in 1975. Dover's edition is big improvement as far as readability is concerned. All the color plates have page references, and are inserted in close proximity to the related text. Overall reproduction of the plates is a trifle smaller and a bit darker than the Weathervane edition, but usually richer in color values and with a bit more clarity. One plate, "Butter is got from the roots of old trees," has come off a little too dark and obscured, but overall, Dover has done a fine job.

For the reader who wants to read more about Peter Pan from the hand of his creator, or who wants to give a child an introduction to the character sans all the commercial and sometimes revisionist ballast that's been added since Barrie's day, this edition is highly recommended.

A classic, when not denatured by Disney

Yes, there is darkness in Peter Pan - and in Alice, too, and in The Wizard of Oz - and certainly in Felix Salton's Bambi. These books, while written for young people, and which may be described as fantasy, have real plots and real characters who are not perfect. Peter Pan is selfish and stubborn as well as charming because children are not angels - they are little humans. Alice is highly critical of the adults in her dream world - adults who act very arbitrarily and often foolishly, as adults often do. Bambi is about the effects of human cruelty on animals; it deals with death and pain. One of the indications that these are good books, and not merely children's books, is that they can be read at different stages of life with new layers of understanding. You don't have to outgrow them, and they are better than many a book written for adults. The 'real' Pan and Alice and Bambi may not be suitable for the very youngest children, but please don't deprive your children culturally by never giving them anything but Disney's cutesy interpretations. For one thing, Barrie and Salton and Carroll were great writers who used words beautifully and had insightand feeling. Children deserve art as much as adults.

Peter Pan Review

Peter Pan is the timeless classic everyone has grown up to. It has been passed down from generation to generation but it all started with one man, J. M. Barrie. When anyone tells the story of Peter Pan most adults don't think it is suitable for them. They think that it is simply a children's story and always will be. However, Barrie made sure that this story would be appropriate for all ages. Some of the language might be a bit difficult for the youngest range but the context helps to figure out a funny word or two. It appeals to the older range because of the layers it conceals. Behind each game they play is a message. Hidden under each smile Wendy gives to Peter is her hidden kiss. However, this story relates mostly to teenagers as they are going through the stage of growing up. Just days before I read Peter Pan I thought of how nice it would be to be free of homework and school. I thought how wonderful it would be to grow up and be independent. After reading this story, and seeing it exactly how Barrie told it, I don't want to grow up as much as Peter Pan and Wendy don't want to. I first heard the story, from seeing the movie, at a very young age, probably around the time I was 2 or 3. Disney tried hard to incorporate everything from the book but they didn't get every meaning or all the symbolism. For example, Mrs. Darling and Wendy Darling both have a hidden kiss. This kiss is hidden under the right hand corner of their mouths and only their true love can find it. Because Mr. Darling can't find Mrs. Darling's kiss, perhaps Barrie is trying to say that although she loves Mr. Darling dearly, he isn't her true love. Barrie fills his book with the perfect amount of detail and color. Children don't get bored because there is too much and adults don't need any more. At one point in the story, Barrie writes about the adventures at the lagoon. "If you shut your eyes and are a lucky one, you may see at times a shapeless pool of lovely pale colours suspended in the darkness; then if you squeeze your eyes tighter, the pool begins to take shape, and the colours become so vivid that with another squeeze they must go on fire." It is work like this that captures the reader and makes them never put the book down. The action and the drama are another reason such a wide age range is attached to this story. The lost boys go on countless raids and enticing adventures that children can only dream about. The love story between Peter and Wendy thickens throughout the entire book and we don't know till the end whether the Darlings will return home to England or stay in Neverland forever. Barrie does such an incredible job with the characters I felt I had met each one personally. John and Michael are as adorable as ever, Captain Hook as evil, Tinkerbell as envious, Peter as cocky and Wendy as in love. Though the title expresses that the story is about Peter Pan, I think one of Barrie's hidden messages was that it was really Wendy's story. Peter Pan can meet many more pirates and have many more adventures but Wendy only had that one time with him. She could only be his mother, or possibly his only love, once in her life. She was supposed to go back to Neverland every spring to do Peter's spring cleaning but he forgot almost every year. Barrie might have been trying to show how forgetful little boys are. He also might have been trying to show Peter's denial that Wendy might grow up. If Peter didn't go back then Wendy might not grow up. If he didn't go back he wouldn't be reminded that he lost the love of his life. Barrie did a phenomenal job with this story. His ideas make you wonder why we have to grow up and why none of us have ever been able to see Tink's glow, outside of our dreams. This book is suitable for all ages and the only thing that could make it even better were if we could be in the story ourselves.

About the Author
SRA salutes Dr. Don Parker, whose remarkable insight, creativity, energy, and concern have helped educators meet the individual learning needs of millions of children over the past 40 years. Parker published his first SRA Reading Lab in February 1957. The labs answered the question of how to provide individualized, multilevel learning for students. The story of the man with an idea and a box begins in 1950. While studying for his master's degree in psychology, Parker took a teaching position in a rural Florida school district. He says the superintendent wanted someone "to help our children read better." Although Parker didn't have classroom experience, he had taken psychology and education courses that he says gave him "ideas about individual differences among learners." Soon these ideas were energized as he tested 3,000 students at ten schools. Eventually, he focused on a class of 32 seventh-grade students with reading levels varying from second grade to twelfth grade. Parker wanted to help these students learn to read at a pace and level that was appropriate for their varied abilities. He began selecting and cutting out lessons from reading workbooks, sorting them by reading level, and putting them into folders. To avoid embarrassing any students, he didn't designate the folder levels by grade numbers; instead, he colored a band around the edge of each folder. He created keys so the students could check their own work and eventually move to the next color level. There were ten color-coded levels. Finally, Parker consolidated all the folders and keys in an old tomato box. This old box of folders and key cards became the earliest form of the Reading Lab. Over the next five years, Parker successfully opened a reading lab at the University of North Carolina and began work on a doctoral degree at Columbia University. Repeatedly encouraged to market his reading lab, Parker took his box (now a cardboard box painted blue) to Science Research Associates. A publisher of psychological, achievement, and vocational guidance tests, SRA wanted to branch out into learning materials. SRA was looking for new ideas. Parker's individualized, multilevel lab format-as opposed to textbooks-was a new concept for the classroom. He presented his innovative program to SRA, and the publisher grasped the potential of this unique learning tool. February 1957 was the publishing date for the SRA Reading Labs! Shortly after the first Labs debuted, Parker received his doctoral degree from Columbia University. Parker eventually became SRA's "scientist in residence." Over the years, other distinguished authors joined Parker in writing updated versions of the Reading Lab, elementary school versions, and supporting materials. Parker traveled extensively, teaching children the world over how to use his multilevel box, SRA Reading Labs. Over the past 40 years, multilevel teaching-learning systems developed by Parker in reading, spelling, vocabulary, literature, and elementary science have been used by more than 100,000,000 pupils in the U.S. and 62 other countries. The SRA Reading Labs continue to be updated, modernized, and, as always, multilevel. SRA congratulates Dr. Don Parker on his lifetime of achievement in helping children all over the world learn to read by using the SRA Reading Labs.

I loved SRAs as a child and I have 5 children

I bought this for use in my homeschool. I loved SRAs as a child and I have 5 children, so I figured I would get lots of use out of it. I received Reading Laboratory 1c. My oldest is not ready for even the easiest power builders. I thought I was ordering the FIRST laboratory but apparently I should have ordered 1a. These are super expensive but I guess we'll hang on to it and try again next year.

As the play unfolds, both women have met men they'd like to get serious with and the knowledge of the test both repels and attracts them: Amanda, desperate for the answer and Monica, in morbid fear of it. Mousetrap is a perfect mystery - scary, thrilling, exciting!

The play 'The Mousetrap' revolves around a couple who set up a guesthouse for the first time and find that their visitors are not what they seem - that every visitor seems to have some connection to the couple, expected or unexpected. This is not made known until much later when a ski-happy policeman Trotter arrives on the scene, and starts connecting the Monkswell manor (the house) to a violent death scene in Paddington a few hours ago, where a notebook was left behind at the crime scene with the words 'Monkswell Manor' written on it. Trotter then gets everyone hyped up over this murderer's identity. This play is good because it showed that everyone could be a suspect, and that element of scariness cannot be missed in this very exciting play, a play that delves back into the histories of its characters. Suspense abounds as the murderer's identity is slowly revealed. A great book - not to be missed.

The guests of a newly opened bed and breakfast, Monkswell Manor, outside of London, are snowed in. The news on the radio tells of a murder that occurred in Paddington, a few hours away. A notebook dropped on the scene leads investigators to Monkswell Manor. All of the people in the house fit the profile of the murderer, a traveler wearing a dark coat and a beret. Mollie and Giles, the manor's owners, experience marriage turbulence as they begin to suspect each other. An older woman is disturbed by a young man who finds the murder humorous. The inn's occupants become very nervous when Inspector Trotter, a ski-happy investigator, arrives at the abode threatening to unveil the secrets that each character is holding. The investigator suggests that everyone there is not only a suspect but also a possible next victim by presenting evidence of a "Three Blind Mice" theme the murderer has been using. Whose secrets will be unveiled and whose will be silenced for eternity?

Who would have ever guessed Christie can do plays to outshine her books? "The Mousetrap" excellently portrays its characters in a concise, yet thorough manner. Christie's dry,English wit is as humorous today as it was in the '40s. Mollie and Giles are a young couple who have just started to run a bed and breakfast called Monkswell Manor. Great character development (as usual with Christie) takes place as guest after quirky guest arrives on-scene to stay at the Manor. Things start to move quickly when Trotter, an odd and fierce police sergeant, arrives on the scene to investigate Monskwell Manor and it's inhabitants in conjunction with a murder that just occured that very same day. "Three Blind Mice" is the murderer's theme, Trotter tells them, and one person has already been killed, leaving (insert suspenseful gasp here) 2 people for the murderer to do away with.The victms? Yet to be determined. The killer? At Monkswell Manor, unbeknownst. The play itself? Screaming fun.

Love and the Black Widow: A Memorable Parody

Originally produced in 1962, Arthur L. Kopit's OH DAD, POOR DAD was not a great commercial success--it ran less than fifty performances on Broadway--but it did manage to pick up a couple of significant awards, and in the 1960s "the freakier the better" had considerable theatrical vogue. And certainly this play had freakiness in abundance: part Tennessee Williams parody and part French absurdist theatre parody, it was an inspired mixture for the times, with everything from a corpse in the closet to man-eating Venus fly-traps.

The story is, as should be obvious, bizarre. Madame Rosepettle is fabulously wealthy; she travels around the world according to her fancy, dragging along her neurotic son, an endless fit of luggage, and the body of her deceased husband. Having arrived at a Caribbean resort, she sets her sights on Commodore Roseabove--even as her stuttering and increasingly hysterical son falls prey to the attentions of Rosalie, an attractive young woman with the instincts of a snake. But as it happens, Madame is not so much interested in seducing the commodore as she is emasculating whatever man happens to find her attractive, and so far as Rosalie is concerned... well, let's just say that it isn't going to work out Rosalie expects.

The script was a little bit too far out for audiences of the early 1960s, but as the decade progressed it became increasingly popular and by the 1970s attained the status of a minor classic. As the 1980s and 1990s gave rise to plays were considerably more freaky than anything Kopit imagined, however, it has become increasingly obscure. Even so, it is a fun item--and one that is really better seen than read, for although the script is entertaining this really is an instance in which the show lives in a way you can't really grasp from the script alone. Recommended.

This play falls into Absurdist Theatre. It is a wonderful example. On every page you're asking yourself n "What is going on?" I loved every and so did my students. It's easy and quick to read but you'll spend hours trying figure out the meaning. Enoy it with coffee or a glass of wine.

Bought as a gift after reading it. This is an interesting book for anyone who enjoys adventure and Irish history. It is the remarkable story of O'Sullivan-Bere' and his early 17th century march through SW Ireland, fleeing the English. The on-foot journey was recreated by the author, back in the 1960's/early 70's (I believe).

She discredited and perjured herself because she felt that direct testimony on her husband's behalf would not have been sufficient to free him. When he turns his back on his wife and goes off with another woman, we realize that he was the murderer. He does not get away it, for there is one turn of plot remaining.

Witness for the Prosecution

Agatha Christie wrote these nine stories in the 1930s and 1940s. They are entertaining as long as you don't question their assumptions. They show the culture from over seventy years ago. I found the best story was "Philomel Cottage". They are mostly about murders. Does this meet the reader's concerns?

"Witness for the Prosecution" tells about the murder of an elderly lady who befriended a young man and named him as the sole heir to her fortune. Does he have an alibi for the time of murder? Can this witness be impeached? [This assumes no background investigation of those letters and witness.]
"The Red Signal" is about the validity of a premonition. Uncle Arlington warns his nephew against his love interest. Can he be framed for a murder? Does this involve insanity? Can you trust your instincts?
"The Fourth Man" tells about four men in a train carriage who discuss a woman with multiple personalities. She has a friend who went into show business and died young. Was this story believable? The fourth man comments.

"S.O.S." is about a family living in an isolated house; its raining. A traveler arrives seeking shelter, and is given a bedroom for the night. Who wrote letters in the dust? Will one of the daughters inherit a large fortune? Is the other girl in danger?
"Where There's a Will" starts when Mrs. Harter is warned against worry and excitement. Her nephew suggests a radio set. One day she hears a strange voice from the radio! Is it a message from the spirit world? Who will inherit her fortune?
"The Mystery of the Blue Jar" tells how a young man hears a cry for help. A young woman near by did not hear it. It repeats. What is it? There is a meeting with this blue jar in a cottage. Will this turn out to be a scam to steal valuable property?

"Philomel Cottage" is the home of Mrs. Alix Martin and her new husband. Gerald (a perfect stranger). Alix put up the money to buy this house. She hears disturbing news from the old man that tends the flower beds. Then old newspaper clippings told of an accused murderer. What will happen that night?
"Accident" starts with the retirement of Inspector Evans of the CID. A neighbor was acquitted of poisoning her husband. Mr. Merrowdene took out life insurance recently. Evans joins them for tea. Will he make a misstep? [Believable?]
"The Second Gong" tells how people are summoned for dinner. They hear a noise like a shot. The master of the house did not show up. He is found dead in a locked room, a small pistol in his hand! Hercule Poirot was called to investigate a swindle. Poirot questions the other guests. Then he offers a solution. Was it the obvious suspect?

Agatha Christie's Great Stage Success

Dame Agatha Christie (1890-1976) originally dazzled readers with a series of mystery novels and short stories. Several of these were adapted to the stage. Disliking the results, Christie decided to try her own hand, and during the 1940s and 1950s she created one roaring success after another. Three are particularly famous: TEN LITTLE INDIANS (1944), THE MOUSETRAP (1952), WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION (1953.)

Based on a short story originally known as "Traitors Hands," WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION differs from most Christie works in that it is more of a courtroom drama than a mystery per se. The play opens in the offices of Sir Wilfred Robarts, who is asked to defend Leonard Vole from a pending murder charge. Leonard's situation is extremely unfortunate. Himself a poor man, he became friendly with a rich and elderly woman. He visited her the same night she was murdered, and her will makes him heir to her estate. Leonard swears he was at home with his wife, German-born Romaine, at the time of the murder. But when Sir Wilfred interviews Romaine, he finds her an extremely unsatisfactory witness. She does not seem to care very much whether Leonard is convicted or not, and she shocks Sir Wilfred when she agrees to appear as a witness--not for Leonard's defense, but for the prosecution.

The first act sets up the basic circumstances; the second act plays out the trial itself, with Romaine giving damning evidence against her husband. Both are meticulously constructed, beautifully written, and abounding with intelligent and witty dialogue and interesting characters. But the great talent of a truly gifted mystery writer is the ability to suddenly gather up the various details of the a story and pull them to an entirely logical but unforeseen and extremely sharp point. This is precisely the case with WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION. Having received new evidence, Sir Wilfred is able to discredit Romaine's testimony, and this would seem the end of the play--but not so. In the final minutes of the play, indeed in slightly less than two pages of dialogue, Christie twists the material with a master hand, turning our perceptions inside out twice and then suddenly concluding the play in a manner that has left audiences gasping ever since.

WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION had tremendously successful runs on the London and New York stage; it also received a very fine screen adaptation in 1957. And therein a certain problem lies: it is so widely seen that many know the way in which the play concludes. This, along with the fact that it requires a very large cast and extremely complex series of sets, has tended to put a damper on the play's production ever since. Even so, WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION remains a masterpiece of the genre, a piece that even those who aren't particularly fond of mysteries will find fascinating to the end. Recommended.

A Murder Announced and then...

As people in a small village wake up and eat breakfast, they start reading a local newspaper and notice a strange announcement about a murder occurring that night at 6:30. That evening, many of the villagers show up to see what will happen--some thinking it is a murder game. The lights go out, a gun goes off and a man is shot dead. The police are called and set about figuring out what really happened. Sir Henry Clithering is called in to help and Miss Marple, who is staying in the area, gets involved. Can they unravel all the clues to find out the truth?

One of the best authors. Love almost everything she wrote.

WILL SOMEONE LET THE WOMAN SPEAK?

What "improvements" have been made for the Signet edition? There are already major differences in punctuation, word choices, and scene breaks between the original Collins and Dodd Mead editions of this novel. There are further differences between the Dodd Mead editions republished by Random House/Avenel and the Dodd Mead editions republished by Simon & Shuster/Pocket. There are further additions still in the Bantam, Berkley, and Black Dog & Leventhal editions. For every publishing house putting out her works, there seem to be a new batch of editors altering Agatha Christie's words and the sound of her voice. What's the matter with these publishers? Whose voice do they think we want to hear when we sit down to a novel by Agatha Christie? And what will she sound like twenty years from now? It's frightening that her estate has failed to see the importance of guarding her words as she wrote them. Please tell me I'm not the only one here who senses that a crime has been committed.

Agatha Christie never disappoints. Great story! Great characters! There were several plot twists that kept the reader in suspense until the end!
