Assuming this is the book I think it is...
By Sophie Hatter
... there's insufficient information provided here to be certain, but judging by title, publisher and date of publication, this should be the text of three short plays by David Mamet, Elaine May and Woody Allen. I saw the plays and have since been hoping to come across a copy of Elaine May's brilliant sketch about a suicidal prostitute and a first-time volunteer at a suicide hotline. David Mamet's play was little more than a drawn-out joke, a bit tedious, but I often quote it for an example of a wilful misunderstanding that gets out of hand. And I don't remember a thing about the Woody Allen play so I can't comment on it, other to say that it was the longest of the three and evidently the least memorable.

The Time Machine (SF Masterworks), by H.G. Wells

A Victorian scientist develops a time machine and travels to the year 802,171 AD. There he finds the meek, child-like Eloi who live in fear of the underground-dwelling Morlocks. When his time machine goes missing, the Traveller faces a fight to enter the Morlocks' domain and return to his own time.

THE TIME MACHINE remains one of the cornerstones of science-fiction literature and has proved hugely influential.

From School Library Journal
Grades 4-7--The St. Charles Players perform this readers' theatre-style rendition of H.G. Wells' classic story. Using appropriate sound effects and alternating readers allows listeners to differentiate between characters and to develop a sense of place and time. The lively narration will hold listeners' attention from beginning to end. The story begins with a revolutionary Victorian scientist who claims to have invented a machine that allows him to travel through time. Using flashbacks, he recounts his adventures in the futurist world he visits in his time machine to a group of skeptical friends. This abridged version will work well as an introduction to classic literature in elementary grade classes, but omits too much of the original text for older students. Consider adding this title to audiobook collections that focus on classic, time-tested literature.

Review
For my money, this was the birth of modern science fiction. Mary Shelley invented science fiction with Frankenstein, but The Time Machine is something else. I like to try to imagine people reading this when it was originally published as a newspaper serial in 1895 England. Still unforgettable, thrilling, haunting.

From the Publisher
The Time Traveller steps into his machine and emerges in the year 802,700 a utopian age of peace and harmony. That is, until the ruckus of the theft of his machine changes all that. Ben Kingsley, the reader, is known for his many roles onscreen, including Ghandi.

One of the greatest books I've ever read--get this edition!
By Polymath
When I tried reading this book as a child many, many years ago, some of the "big" words and allusions made it hard going, and I never completed it then. Finally, about fifteen years ago I did read it through, but still was missing something. Then, a few weeks ago, I got this edition, after having enjoyed the Penguin edition of "The War of the Worlds" with its annotations and map. Well, the annotations in this edition (about four pages worth as endnotes) of "The Time Machine" cleared away whatever fuzz remained, and I was completely overcome by the greatness of the book, great from whatever way I looked at it: plot, speculation, characters, "sense of wonder", even throw away humor were all topnotch. I couldn't believe what I'd been missing. A few days later, I read another editon of the book that didn't have notes, and had no trouble following that version. I plan to reread the book again shortly. So if you've had difficulty reading "The Time Machine" for some of the reasons mentioned above, get this version pronto and find out what a true classic is.

A Timeless Classic
By Daniel Jolley
It goes without saying that this book is a science fiction classic in every sense of the word and that H.G. Wells was a founding father of the genre. This book proves that science fiction does not necessarily need to be heavily technical but does need to deal with grand themes such as the nature of society; man's hopes, dreams, and fears; and the very humanity of man. Wells does not go to great lengths in describing the time machine nor how it works. He lays the foundation of the story in science and then proceeds with his somewhat moralistic and certainly socially conscious story. This makes his writing much more enjoyable than that of a Jules Verne, who liked to fill up pages with scientific and highly technical nomenclature. One of the more striking aspects of the novel is Wells' treatment of the actual experience of time travel--moving in time is not like opening and walking through a door. There are physical and emotional aspects of the time travel process--in fact, some of the most descriptive passages in the book are those describing what the Time Traveler experiences and sees during his time shifts.
Basically, Wells is posing the question of What will man be like in the distant future? His answer is quite unlike any kind of scenario that modern readers, schooled on Star Wars, Star Trek, and the like, would come up with. He gives birth to a simple and tragic society made up of the Eloi and the Morlocks. In contrasting these two groups, he offers a critique of sorts of men in his own time. Clearly, he is worried about the gap between the rich and the poor widening in his own world and is warning his readers of the dangers posed by such a growing rift. It is most interesting to see how the Time Traveler's views of the future change over the course of his stay there. At first, he basically thinks that the Morlocks, stuck underground, have been forced to do all the work of man while the Eloi on the surface play and dance around in perpetual leisure. Later, he realizes that the truth is more complicated than that. The whole book seems to be a warning against scientific omniscience and communal living. The future human society that the Time Traveler finds is supposedly ideal--free of disease, wars, discrimination, intensive labor, poverty, etc. However, the great works of man have been lost--architectural, scientific, philosophical, literary, etc.--and human beings have basically become children, each one dressing, looking, and acting the same. The time traveler opines that the loss of conflict and change that came in the wake of society's elimination of health, political, and social issues served to stagnate mankind. Without conflict, there is no achievement, and mankind atrophies both mentally and physically.
This basic message of the novel is more than applicable today. While it is paramount that we continue to research and discover new scientific facts about ourselves and the world, we must not come to view science as a religion that can ultimately recreate the earth as an immense garden of Eden. Knowledge itself is far less important than the healthy pursuit of that knowledge. Man's greatness lies in his ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances. Speaking only for myself, I think this novel points out the dangerousness of Communism and points to the importance of individualism--if you engineer a society in which every person is "the same" and "equal," then you have doomed that society.

Past and present masterpiece
By Philip Challinor
This is the little number that started it all. For the English-speaking world (some translations of Verne possibly aside), science fiction begins with the four brief, brilliant novels published by H G Wells in the 1890s. The War of the Worlds is a still-unsurpassed alien invasion story; The Invisible Man one of the first world-dominating mad scientist tales; and The Island of Dr Moreau a splendidly misanthropic story of artificial evolution and genetic modification. But The Time Machine came first, launching Wells' career in literature; and, after just over a century, there still isn't anything nearly like it. A Victorian inventor travels to the year 802701, where the class divisions of Wells' day have evolved two distinct human races: the helpless, childlike and luxurious Eloi and the monstrous, mechanically adept and subterranean Morlocks. Predictably, the film version turned them into the usual Good Guys and Bad Guys, though it's still worth seeing, particularly for its conception of the Time Machine itself - a splendid piece of Victorian gadgetry. The book, despite its sociological-satirical premise, is rather more complex in its treatment of the opposed races, and the Time Traveller's voyage ends, not with them, but still further in the future, with images of a dead sun and a dark earth populated only by scuttling, indefinite shadows. As in the other three novels, too, the premise of the story is carefully worked out and clearly explained - a discipline largely beyond science fiction today, in which time travel, invading aliens or whatever are simply taken for granted as convenient genre props and automatic thought-nullifiers. After more than a century, The Time Machine is still waiting for the rest of us to catch up.

Excellent job description of your profession
By AleasureEveMagdalene
Delores French did an excellent job protraying the profession of "working" as it is without getting into trying to talk the reader out of it. Like it or not, prostitution is a profession. Anyone who reads her very informative publication will learn this message. In her pages, Delores goes into her "pilgrimage" from working into the traditional world into the various worlds that comprise sex businesses. She describes her work throughout the world and seeks to decriminalize the field. For those who want to learn about this field and has been seeking a "career" guide, I recommend you read these pages. For those trying to talk people out of working in this field, I hope you read Delores account, as she does a good job protraying the field in it's objective light.

Shatters Stereotypes
By A Customer
This smart, witty, and courageous autobiography shatters the stereotypes that most people have of prostitutes. Contrary to popular opinion, the majority of American prostitutes are not abused, exploited, drug-addicted, pimp-controlled street whores with low self-esteem who have turned to sex work in desperation after a lifetime of poverty and violence. Nor is it true that prostitutes are significant transmitters of STDs or responsible for the spread of Aids. Dolores French is refreshingly candid, passionate, possesses a deep sense of justice, and genuinely enjoys what she does for a living (and how many people can honestly say that about their jobs?). While acknowledging that prostitution--like any other profession--isn't for everyone, she argues convincingly that women should be free to choose prostitution as a career without having to fear stigmatization, discrimination, police harassment, arrest, and incarceration for doing something that would be perfectly le! gal if they didn't have the audacity to charge for it. Like other sex workers' rights activists, she favors decriminalization rather than legalization.
"Working" is a perfect blend of engrossing autobiographical storytelling (Dolores has worked as an escort, in brothels, out of apartments, and on the street; she has worked in the U.S., the Carribbean, and in Europe--and she has plenty of fascinating tales to tell) and facts & stats about prostitution. This book is essential reading for anyone who's ever wanted to know what it's really like to work as a prostitute, and it should be required for individuals who are making and debating laws and policies pertaining to prostitution.

Musical

Characters 8 male, 7 female, plus 18 children

Carol Ryrie Brink's Newberry Award-winning novel Caddie Woodlawn is brought to exuberant life as a musical. Caddie (the iconic, high-spirited Wisconsin pioneer girl beloved by generations of readers) leads her willing siblings in a series of thrilling adventures, not always with the approval of her traditional Bostonian mother. Her father, however, encourages her antics, that she might thrive amidst the new, tougher ways of the West. In a dramatic climax, Caddie single-handedly diffuses a potentially deadly clash between the terrified settlers and the local Dakota tribe through a daring and dangerous act. But her action only deepens her conflict with her mother. Ultimately, Caddie learns invaluable lessons about reconciling the head-strong child she's been, and the responsible adult she is soon to be. Through it all, the sacredness of tradition - passed from one generation to the next - is powerfully dramatized. As one wise friend tells Caddie: "Families - they're our link to forever, lass."

"As cream rises to the top, so did Caddie Woodlawn... -Wisconsin News-Leader.

"Young audiences adore Caddie Woodlawn!" -Springfield News-Leader.

"A fine family yarn..." -Milwaukee Journal.

A unique 4-person thriller
By MTD
This play is hard to find in regular bookstores, but definitely turned out to be a great addition to my play collection.
If you are purchasing it with the intention of possibly producing it, you may find the following info helpful:
Cast: 2m, 2f (potential addition of 1m and 1f if you wanted) - any race would be appropriate, and ages ranging from 20s to late 30s would also be appropriate.
Set: Apartment with a main door and a bathroom door.
Special technical requirements: The script calls for some drastic lighting changes (the lights go very bright at certain moments).
Props: moderate, including some weapons.
Story: Not as "other-worldly" as some of the blurbs on the play make it seem, but it is an unusual set up that will probably keep you wondering "what's going ON here?!" until the final reveal.

Wisdom in a samll package
By Jewell M. Harwood
The Spanish Gardener begins and continues on for most of the book as a simplistic story about a self-involved man who needs to control everything within his reach, including his son. Near the end, two big surprises make one reconsider the jist of the story. Loved the highfaluting language.

Like all narcissists
By Patricia Nolan Stein
This is a timeless novel about a narcissist who attempts to control everyone around him, and ends up destroying his personal relationships. Like all narcissists, he's unable to comprehend the destruction and damage he creates, and instead puts the blame on others. He's a snobbish man with no understanding of human behavior, and ends up suffering the consequences of his ignorance. Those closest to him---his wife and eventually his son--realize they must escape his narcissism and self-absorption in order to save themselves.
A.J. Cronin understood and wrote of the good and evil encompassing humanity, similar to the novels of W. Somerset Maugham and Louis Bromfield.

A Bitter-sweet Tragedy
By Jerry Kelley
This lesser-known work of A. J. Cronin is a must read for those of us who have become fans of Cronin's writings. While it doesn't have the heartwarming qualities of "The Keys of the KIngdom" it does cause the reader to become reflective of the human condition. Harrington Brande is a career United States diplomatic representative posted to northeastern Spain. He has the unique quality of misinterpreting those of whom he comes in contact. He acts much like the Audubon turkey described in the last pages of the book. His assertive self-sufficient ways cause him to lose the love of those whom matter the most to him.

Realistic dialogue, intense mood, excellent!
By Official NetNanuNanu
Frank Gilroy's excellent drama has garnered Pulitzer Prize in 1964 and a Tony Award. Set in the Bronx, NY, 1946, the play unfolds with creeping intensity to reveal the story of a man, his wife and son who endure pain and sadness as members of an unhappy, strained family.

Although the play does have a few dramatic moments, the gift is in the ordinary simple dialogue that reveals the depth of the dysfunctional family. The excellence is in the very realistic dialogue! Gilroy has captured the mannerism of ordinary, simple day-to-day communication in a family especially when, at times, two people communicating with one another but without really communicating with one another. There are no grand monologues, just enough dialogue that reflects the way we really speak with few words and phrases.

Middle aged, John Cleary and his wife Nettie are enjoying the return of their 21-year son, Timmy, from the war after three years. John has had a lot of missed opportunities in life, has cheated and never been a loving father or husband.

John secretly admires his son's uniform and the accomplishments, but cops an attitude on veterans, since he was unable to himself serve, another of his missed opportunities.

Wife Nettie holds a grudge too, for past indiscretions of her husband too. We soon learn the failures and disappointments that become the foundation of a marriage that eventually lead to the dysfunction of the son who gets caught in the middle of the discontent and tension three years after this duty in the army. Quite a bit happens in this two act play with frequently changing moods, tension, etc.

One challenge I have with plays is to find the title of the play "The Subject Was Roses" in the text. I see it as the Roses representing the marriage and the whole crux of marital turmoil.

Jack Albertson and Charlie Sheen acted together onstage in 1964, however, the play takes place in 1946. The two also performed in the movie version, The Subject Was Roses. Have not watched it yet, but hopefully it is as well as the book. ...Rizzo

The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse, by Robert Rankin

A hilarious comic fantasy from the bestselling cult creator of the Brentford Triangle Trilogy

Once upon a time Jack set out to find his fortune in the big city. But the big city is Toy City, formerly known as Toy Town, and it has grown considerably since the good old days and isn't all that jolly any more. And there is a serial killer loose on the streets. The old, rich nursery rhyme characters are being slaughtered one by one and the Toy City police are getting nowhere in their investigations. Meanwhile, Private Eye Bill Winkie has gone missing, leaving behind his sidekick Eddie Bear to take care of things.

Eddie may be a battered teddy with an identity crisis, but someone's got to stop the killer. When he teams up with Jack, the two are ready for the challenge. Not to mention the heavy drinking, bad behaviour, car chases, gratuitous sex and violence, toy fetishism and all-round grossness along the way. It's going to be an epic adventure!

From Publishers Weekly
Like a mad toymaker's fever dream, Rankin's uproarious book imagines a town where toys and nursery rhymes come to life and pursue human activities: they walk, talk, eat, drink and commit heinous crimes. Thirteen-year-old Jack goes to the City to find his fortune, unaware that the City is in fact Toy City, where legends and fables walk (or stumble, if they've had too much to drink). He meets up with detective teddy bear Eddie, who is investigating the murder of Humpty Dumpty. When Little Boy Blue is offed, it's clear that a serial killer is prowling Toy City, leaving behind the titular chocolate bunnies as his calling card. Rankin doesn't just drop names of familiar characters but gives them riotous back stories: Miss Muffett hosts a daytime TV talk show called "The Tuffet"; Mother Goose (who prefers to be called Madame Goose) runs a brothel; Humpty Dumpty was likely a failed television stuntman named Terry Horsey. Although the story is wickedly clever and the payoff is a great and satisfying surprise, the real delight comes from watching Rankin work his linguistic magic: characters talk in hilariously circular and self-aware dialogue, and puns and wordplay are packed into the prose like sardines in a tin. Although substantially darker and edgier than the Hitchhiker's series, this gem will appeal to Douglas Adams fans, as well as lovers of British humor in general.

A very specific kind of humor; you need to be in the mood
By Esther Schindler
Unlike many of the reviewers here, I like The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse. I understand what the critics disliked; those faults simply didn't irritate me. Instead, I found the book very funny... assuming you can pry yourself into a sort-of Monty Python mood and not take it seriously.

The story's premise is simple enough to impart: boy goes to the big city to seek his fortune, only to discover that the city is occupied by talking toys and by nursery rhyme characters. He shortly finds himself in the role of detective (or detective's assistant, really; Eddie the teddy bear is the real brains, even if those brains are made of sawdust). But in a way the plot isn't important, just as the plot of, say, Monty Python and the Holy Grail isn't what you went to see.

The writer's style is self-indulgent, like an actor who is aware of the audience's presence and speaks to them. He toddles off onto tangents because, it's obvious, *he* wanted to go down that street to find out what the characters were doing and what was served at that bar. To a degree (or, assuming that I'm in the right mood), I like this; the author is having fun and taking you on his adventure.

Amazon kept insisting that I'd love this book because I bought so many books by Jasper Fforde. I wish I hadn't known that, because I expected it to be Fforde-like. It's clever and English and has lots of literary references (Rankin is subtle about some of them). But the tone is entirely different. Fforde's books *are* for when you want Serious Funny stuff; this one is best suited to reading with a glass of beer (wine is for Fforde) after a really lousy week at work, when you want to escape to a completely silly reality and it's too much trouble to find your Rocky Horror DVD.

Fairly Amusing Premise Goes On Too Long
By A. Ross
Basically, this is the kind of book where your reaction to the title and/or cover is a pretty good indicator of whether or not you'll enjoy the contents. It's silly stuff, sometimes dark, but mostly the kind of outsize fantasy/comedy British writers seem to manage to handle so well (Rankin is often mentioned in the same breath as Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams). The concept at work here is that a serial killer is on the loose in a city populated by toys, striking down the rich and famous -- namely notables from nursery rhyme fame, such as Humpty Dumpty, Little Boy Blue, et al. Into this killing zone stumbles Jack, a 13-year-old boy come to "seek his fortune" in the big city. But almost immediately upon his arrival, the big city seeks his fortune instead, leaving him mugged and penniless in an alleyway. Fortunately, a kindly teddy bear named Eddie comes along to take him under his paw and get him involved the mystery. It seems Eddie is the sidekick of Toy City's eminent detective Bill Winkie (aka Wee Willie Winkie), who has gone missing. Soon Jack and Eddie are racing across Toy City in clockwork cars, checking out murder scenes, visiting Madam Goose's house of ill repute, and getting sloshed at Tinto's Bar, as they attempt to solve the case. If this sounds somewhat reminiscent of the 1988 film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", it should.

Part of the fun comes from the spoofing of nursery rhymes and childhood toys, including comically gruesome murders, thriller/noir goofing, and totally tongue in cheek action. The other part of the fun comes from the wacky wordplay. Rankin is fond of alliteration, punning, double-entendres, repetition of stock phrases, and from the mouth of Eddie, the incomplete simile. If there's one thing one will remember from this book it's the construction "It's as good as!" or "I was scared as!" It has to be said that the book runs on about 50-100 pages too long as the jokes start to wear a bit thin and the action starts to get too repetitive. Alas after all the buildup, the mystery itself is a bit of a shaggy dog story, and somewhat of a letdown. It is fairly inventive stuff, and kind of fun for the most part, but unless you think the title is hilarious you probably won't love the book.

Great story, intolerable affected writing style
By Jan in NC
Here's a sample of his writing style: "The moon, shining down upon the city, shone down also upon Jack, shone down upon the body of Jack, that was lying strewn in an alleyway. The moon didn't care too much about Jack. But then, the moon didn't care too much about anything. Caring wasn't in the moon's remit. The moon was just the moon, and on nights when there wasn't any cloud about, it just shone down, upon anything and everything really, it didn't matter what to the moon. The moon had seen most things before, and would surely see them again. And as for all the things that the moon hadn't seen, well, it would see them too eventually. On nights when there wasn't any cloud about. Not that it would care too much when it did. It was a moon thing, not caring. The moon couldn't help the way it was."

So, if you like this style enough to read 340 pages of it, go for it. If you are looking for a Douglas Adams clone, you'll be deeply disappointed. This book is in serious need of an editor and I believe the author got paid for this by the word because there was page after page of this kind of annoying and irrelevant pontificating that I found intolerable by about page 50. It's rare for me to give up on a book.

Review
"The student essays are a strength. I really like to see an illustrated example or model of a paper as it evolves from draft to draft. I like the line by line editing notes. The emphasis on rhetorical devices is another strength. It's good to see so much of the book dedicated to so many devices of rhetoric. Also, when the book uses outlines, graphs, and charts, it succeeds tremendously."

"The overall organization of the book is effective. All important topics are covered quite thoroughly."

"I really like the idea of having the handbook inside the reader."

"Several years ago, while searching for a text that included the elements which I had found over the years were best for teaching composition, I discovered FROM IDEA TO ESSAY, 11e. It proved to be an excellent text, which I appreciated more during the successive years that I used it to teach my introductory classes. I was pleased to discover the elements I so appreciated in that text were kept in the current edition: an organization that began with an overview of the process of writing, a review of classic rhetorical structure, and grammar."

About the Author
Born in Belgium, the daughter of an American minister, Jo Ray McCuen-Metherell had moved from Brussels to Paris to Bern, Switzerland, by the time she was seven years old. In Bern, she attended the Freies Gymnasium and spoke not only fluent French and German but also English, which was the language spoken to her by her American parents. After enduring World War II, Jo Ray's parents sent her and her brother to Pacific Union College (in the Napa Valley), where Jo Ray received a B. A. in English. After teaching English and French in high school for several years, Jo Ray started to take night classes at the University of Southern California in order to earn an M.A. and Ph.D., which would allow her to teach in college. While working on her doctorate, she was first hired to teach English at Glendale Community College and later to serve as Dean of the Evening College. A chance meeting in 1973 with Anthony C. Winkler, a successful novelist, led to a literary partnership that has produced 15 coauthored textbooks used at colleges and universities across the United States.

Born February 25, 1942, in Kingston, Jamaica West Indies. Educated in Jamaica at Excelsior College, Mount Alvernia Academy and Cornwall College, the last two being in Montego Bay. Educated in the United States at Citrus Community College, Glendora California (AA degree 1965). Taught briefly at Pasadena City College and for a year Moneague Teachers College in Saint Anne, Jamaica, an experience chronicled in Going Home to Teach (1995.) From 1968 to 1975 Winkler had a sales territory as a bookman, covering Southern California, Las Vegas and Utah for Appleton Century Crofts textbook publishers, and later Southern California and Arizona for Scots Foresman. In 1969 he decided he could write textbooks as well as anyone and through a chance meeting with the sales representative of another company, he submitted the manuscript POETRY AS SYSTEM and was offered a contract for its publication. Eventually, he met Jo Ray McCuen and the two became textbook writers and collaborators. Over the years they have produced more than a dozen textbooks, most on rhetoric and writing, which have survived through multiple editions. In 1975, Winkler quit his job as a bookman and became a full-time freelance writer. In addition to his textbooks, his body of work include the following: "The Painted Canoe" (novel 1983), "The Lunatic" (novel 1987), "The Great Yacht Race" (novel 1992), "Going Home to Teach" (autobiography 1995), "The Duppy" (novel 1997), "The Annihilation of Fish and other stories" (short story collection 2004), "Dog War" (novel 2006), "Trust the Darkness: My Life As a Writer" (autobiography 2008); Plays: "The Hippopotamus Card" (produced by WDR German radio network), "The Burglary" (premiered in Toronto July 7, 2005); Movies: "The Lunatic" (1991), "The Annihilation of Fish" (1999), "Biography Bob Marley, an Intimate Portrait by His Mother" (1996, with Cedella Booker, Marley's mother)

An Excellent Tool
By Amazon Customer
Even though this is a college textbook, I bought it to use with my high school essay-writing class. I'd had one for years, but I wore it out. Of all the books I've ever used, I feel this one is still the best.

Very cheap price very happy.
By Emo
Bought this for a friend of mine to help him out, he was very happy it was in great shape for a big fraction off the original price, which is outrageously expensive I can't explain why, look it up.

A dry read, but great if your college requires it for coursework.
By Nathan E Nichols
I loved the rental option; it was $120+ less than the cost from my school's bookstore. Content was OK; but, it is a dry read -I only used it for the course that was required for my degree program.
