Grease: A New '50's Rock'n' Roll Musical, by Jim Jacobs, Warren Casey

Full Length, Musical / Characters: 9m, 8f Here is Rydell High's senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding "Burger Palace Boys" and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking "Pink Ladies" in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head "greaser" Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their "Summer Nights" as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as "Greased Lightnin'", "It's Raining on Prom Night", "Alone at the Drive-In Movie" recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation. An 8-year run on Broadway and two subsequent revivals along with innumerable school and community productions place Grease among the world's most popular musicals. "A lively and funny musical--as well as the dancingest one in town...it's a winner...the songs are dandies [that portray] the early rockers with zip and charm...the sheer energy of Grease carries all before it." - N.Y. Definitely Racy

This is the original script, which I ordered at the same time as the school version, to decide which would be best to produce at our school. If you are planning for an audience of parents/students, in a school situation, the school version is definitely the better choice. If you are a community theatre and your target audience is older and/or more liberal, then the original version would be fine to perform, a it has sexual themes and some swearing.

The Original Broadway Version
By Sally
I teach drama, and this is version I wanted. I can't stand the watered-down "school" version and won't use it. This is the original Broadway version with all the sexual slang and four-letter words. It's in the newer Samuel French format, which is somewhat easier to read, and has a nice cover. As with all Samuel French scripts, stage design, etc., is included in the back.

'No city, no town, no community of more than one thousand people or two hundred buildings to the square mile, shall be built or permitted to exist anywhere in the United States of America.' Thirtieth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States Two generations after the nuclear holocaust, rumours persisted about a secret desert hideaway where scientists worked with dangerous machines and where men plotted to revive the cities. Almost a continent away, Len Coulter heard whisperings that fired his imagination. Then one day he found a strange wooden box ...

Great "Golden Oldie" of the way the future was.
By M. W. Stone
It's fascinating to see how some sf novels stand the test of time and others don't. I still have my old Mayflower pb of "The Long Tomorrow" which I purchased as a teenager c1963, and reread it from time to time. Doing so produces most curious feelings, like going through a timewarp of some kind.

TLT is a "Golden Oldie". Published in 1955, it is one of the huge number of "post nuclear war" stories that came out in that nervous era, but is head and shoulders above the bulk of them. It's theme, unique in sf as far as I know, is a future world in which the Amish (or at least a sect more or less "cloned" from them) have taken over America.

The idea that, in the aftermath of holocaust, the people might turn against science and technology, has of course been used by others, notably Walter M Miller in "A Canticle For Leibowitz". But TLT takes a subtly different angle. The New Mennonites are not opposed to education, their children are literate, and they seem to live at an early 19th century level, just pre-railroad. It isn't a Dark Age in the usual sense. But there are strict limits. No electricity, industry or anything high tech. Riverboats are allowed to have simple engines, but land transport stops at the horse and buggy. Above all, the US Constitution has been amended to forbid the existence of any city or town above 2000 people.

The central characters are two teenage boys in a New Mennonite community in Ohio. Len Colter (14) and his slightly older cousin, Esau. They discover a radio set, belonging to a passing trader, and realise that he comes from "Bartorstown", a secret society out west conspiring to bring back the bad old days, association - real or alleged - with which can result in whipping at best, instant lynching at worst. Fascinated by it (and, in Len's case, by their grandmother's wistful recollections of before the war) they seek to know more. This leads to their having to flee from home, and set out on a quest to get to Bartorstown. This quest covers several years and forms the middle third or so of the book.

On arrival, they are in for a mighty shock. These people are the custodians of the last surviving nuclear reactor, and are seeking a way to neutralise atomic bombs, so the power of the atom can be safely used without another catastrophe. This forces the sensitive Len (by now more or less adult) into a crisis of conscience. Is this a wise path to take, or were his elders right all along? The last part of the book is about him coming to terms with this question.

Perhaps my strongest reaction, on going back to it, is surprise at finding the Amish (on whom the New Mennonites are explicitly modelled) cast as the Bad Guys. This, I suspect, would be out of the question today. If their treatment by Hollywood ("Witness", "Harvest of Fire" etc) is anything to go by, they are about the most popular ethnic minority in America. To chide them for holding up "progress" would be almost unthinkable.

The book shows its age in other ways too, notably its simple 1950s faith in technology. It's now some 80 years since World War III, yet the group at Bartorstown are perfectly happy living next to a prewar nuclear reactor. Even those who for various reasons aren't happy with it don't seem to fear any physical danger, save of course from the neighbours if they ever find out. These days, I suspect few would be keen to live even near an eight year old one. Yet Bartorstown has lasted three generations without even a Three Mile Island, let alone a Chernobyl. Remarkable workmanship.

Even the nuclear war itself seems to have left remarkably little damage in its wake, with no deformed babies, no cancer, etc, while Len's grandmother, who experienced the war as a child, has lived to a ripe old age. The only lasting harm seems to have been psychological. Nor does anyone see a problem about restoring civilisation in a world where the oilfields are probably mostly drained. It is just assumed that such things can be got round. This is the outlook of a different era from today.

Ditto for the people. There are some who'd rather not be living there, but after eight decades in a country hostile to all it stands for, Bartorstown still hasn't been betrayed or detected. Could anyone really keep the lid on for so long? Quibble, quibble, Mike.

In short, TLT is a remarkable glimpse into "The way the future was" as of 50 years ago. If it were written today, I suspect the Mennonites would be definitely the guys in white hats, and the young heroes would not merely get out of Bartorstown, but do their best not to travel downwind of it any more than they absolutely had to. This said, however, it is beautifully written, and one of the best books of its kind. Read it as an sf "period piece" and you won't be sorry.

An early vision of America after a nuclear war
By TChris
Despite its acclaim as an early vision of America after a nuclear war, The Long Tomorrow doesn't have the same impact as the best examples of post-apocalyptic fiction. Leigh Brackett's 1955 novel nonetheless deserves its status as a science fiction "classic," albeit more for the message it delivers than for the quality of the story it tells.

After the war, cities are widely regarded as a source of wickedness, although Len Colter's grandmother remembers them with fondness, as places with electricity and indoor plumbing, supermarkets and movie theaters. The people best equipped to survive the annihilation aren't city dwellers but those who are accustomed to living a simple rural life. The Mennonites have multiplied, a trend that is enhanced by a constitutional amendment prohibiting cities of more than one thousand residents. The religious values that inform the Mennonite leaders also (not so coincidentally) work to their economic advantage. The Mennonites, however, have little use for members of another fast-growing religion, the fire-and-brimstone fundamentalists who preach hatred and urge that sinners (including those who advocate urban growth) be subjected to the usual range of biblical torments, including death by stoning.

Len has a rebellious instinct that no amount of whipping will extinguish. His desire for knowledge, his will to know what exists in the world beyond the village limits, might be sinful -- the sin of pride, his father tells him -- but Len is willing to accept damnation for the sake of learning the truth. After his grandmother explains that, before the war, the government built a town in the west called Bartorstown, populated with scientists dedicated to a secret project, Len resolves to find it, hoping it will be the source of enlightenment he craves. Thus Len and his cousin Esau begin a journey across a post-apocalyptic landscape. The truth about Bartorstown comes as a surprise and the story takes an interesting turn as it nears the end.

Like many dystopian tales, The Long Tomorrow has a cautionary message. This one is about the evils of intolerance and thought-control, the value of independent thinking. The fear of cities expressed in Brackett's novel is really a fear of progressive thinking, a belief that life was better (in modern terms, that "family values" were stronger) in the good old days. Knowledge is condemned because it was misused; a retreat from knowledge is seen as the path to salvation. Still, as Len comes to realize, even if we can be cleansed of sin (as his people believe), we can never be cleansed of knowledge -- "there is no mystical escape from it." Deliberate ignorance is not the antidote to dangerous knowledge; wisdom is. Perhaps themes that were compelling in 1955 now seem dated, but the argument that there should be limits to knowledge, particularly when knowledge contradicts biblical teachings, retains a twenty-first century following. The argument that cities were destroyed in a nuclear war because they were "sinful" finds echoes in similar remarks made about New Orleans after Katrina.

I've never been as appreciative of Brackett's prose as some sf fans. She was a perfectly capable writer, but (at least to me) her style is no more "literary" than that of many other well-recognized sf writers of her era. Still, her writing becomes more resonant as the story progresses. On occasion the novel has the flavor of a western; at other times there's a hint of Huckleberry Finn, although Huck's trip down the Mississippi is vastly more eventful than Len's underwhelming voyage along the Ohio River. Other "message" novels manage more subtlety than this one. Although The Long Tomorrow doesn't make it into my personal canon of cherished sf novels from the 1950s, it endures as an enjoyable read.

Entertaining Read - Well Worth It
By Tracy Rounds
Leigh Brackett wrote this interesting sci fi thriller after moving to Ohio, and in Ohio it begins, two generations after the Destruction, a global annhilation by nuclear holocaust. Fear predominates the culture and identity of every individual and it is the fight against the fear of knowledge, that most dreaded, that Len Coulter wages along with his cousin, Esau. A believable piece of fiction for a book written over 60 years ago which is thoroughly relevant to the present-day culture of fear.

Not for children
By William Gennaro
These are the original fairy tales written as morality stories for adults. They are not the Disney or Golden book versions appropriate for children. I have always found it interesting to read stories in their original context. In my opinion this book is appropriate for ages no less than 16yrs of age and up. Enjoy and be surprised by how these stories were originally published

Hyperion Omnibus (Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion), by Dan Simmons

The Hyperion books are credited with single-handedly reinventing and reinvigorating SF in the 1990s. A broad canvased, hugely imaginative and exciting SF epic, the books draw on the works of Keats and provide a uniquely intelligent and literary approach with cutting edge science, compelling characterisation and edge-of-your-seat excitement. The story is continued in ENDYMION and THE RISE OF ENDYMION, which Gollancz will also be publishing in an omnibus volume.

I'll spare you the synopsis. I was first skeptical of the odd looking cover and the interest in learning about the Seven Pilgrims, but Dan Simmons writes with breath-taking ferocity. The Hyperion series is the horrifying, wonderous, enchanting obsessive-stay-up-all-night to read thriller that I had been looking for, for years. The storyline unfolds in so many satisfying ways, the truth is always a chapter away. Hyperion's world is as rich as any other I've ever encountered. It is Asimov's Foundation with the kiddie gloves off. It's like the first 2 books of Dune before it gets weird with Leto II. ( You know what I mean) But I shall dare say this.

Hyperion is better.

Way better.

It is beautiful, brutal, incredible, satisfying and deserving of every sci-fi fan's adoration. It was amazing enough for me that I'm actually here writing a review imploring you to not only buy this book, but buy it NEW so that Dan Simmons can get rewarded with your hard earned money. Or you can be a miser and say to hell with Dan Simmons. Whatever the case, just buy this book. (It has the first two "Hyperion" and "Fall of Hyperion".) And pick up Endymion and The Rise of Endymion while you're at it. Now!!!! (Click)

Simmons' two science fiction classics under one cover as they were meant to be
By Wayne Klein
As war rages above the planet Hyperion seven pilgrims embark on a journey that six of them may never return from. They are on a pilgrimage to the Time Tombs an area of the planet where time runs in reverse and that is guarded by the three meter tall four armed metallic Shrike a creature covered with spikes with red glowing eyes and no sense of mercy. The creature can appear at any time, any place with no warning taking its victims in a seemingly random fashion. The Church of the Shrike believes that the Lord of Pain has come to announce the end of the universe and a time for atonement. Oh, and the seven pilgrims have all been warned that there is a traitor among them.

Each of the pilgrims have their own reason for going on this journey of no return. One wants to save the life of his daughter who is aging backwards after encountering the Shrike; one wants to kill the creature after being duped into starting the war; another believes that somehow he brought the Shrike back when he wrote his Hyperion Cantos. They are all seeking answers which might result in death. The Shrike's reappearence means the end of everything to many and an answer to mysteries for others.

Dan Simmons' first two books in his quartet set in and around the planet Hyperion is a well written space opera that lives up to the genres potential--it is epic storytelling that really hasn't been seen since Frank Herbert's DUNE series or John Varley's Gaean trilogy. While the prose can often become overly florid at times, Simmons does a terrific job of creating his universe and the characters that inhabit it. Many have pointed out the parallels to The Canterbury Tales and with good reason--Simmons is an educated writer that isn't afraid to throw in literary references to enrich his story.

This book along with Endymion, The Rise of Endymion (again, both were written as a single novel) and the short story "Orphans of the Helix" (published in the collection Worlds Enough & Time)are all worth reading. Don't let those who argue that Simmons' intelligent references to other novels is a bad thing--he makes assumptions about the intelligence of his readers--it just enhances the experience.

Collects "Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion"
By Lonnie E. Holder
My brother gave me this very good book, which collects the Hugo Award winning book "Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion." The two books are two parts of a single story and need to be read together, which makes this omnibus invaluable. Thank you brother! I have read less science fiction in recent years, principally because of the difficulty of finding good science fiction. These two books are great if you like science fiction that requires concentration and analysis.

In the 29th century, mankind is under threat of invasion by the Ousters. An invincible robot-like creature called the Shrike may hold the key to defeating the ousters. However, the Shrike may also be the doom of mankind. Seven pilgrims and one child journey to see the Shrike. In "Hyperion," we learn that each pilgrim was selected for various reasons that relate to Hyperion and often to the Shrike itself.

After the pilgrims have gathered on a treeship, a spaceship as bizarre as any I have seen described in science fiction, the pilgrims each tell their stories in turn. Since some of the stories are quite lengthy, the stories continue after the pilgrims land on Hyperion and journey to the Time Tombs. Each story explains the background of the pilgrims, the political situation and history of mankind up to the 29th century, and gives intriguing backgrounds to the pilgrims. I generally found the stories interesting, though the story of the poet was the most boring, at first. The poet's story becomes more interesting as it nears the end, and we learn in "The Fall of Hyperion" that the poet's story is critical.

I found many aspects of this novel interesting and unique. There are the people who follow the crucifix; people who may potentially live forever. There are the catacombs below Hyperion. Who built the catacombs and what is their purpose? What is the nature of the Shrike, including its incredible power to manipulate time? How did Rachel come grow younger each day after an encounter with the Time Tombs? What does the artificial intelligence Technocore have to do with the Ousters and the Shrike? This book asks many more questions, and the journey through "The Fall of Hyperion" will provide the answers.

As the pilgrims journey to Hyperion and then to the Time Tombs on Hyperion, the Ousters approach Hyperion, and the pilgrimage becomes a race against time. Rachel continues to grow younger each day, approaching the date of her birth. What will happen to Rachel then?

In "Hyperion" we learned the story of each of the Pilgrims. In this book each of the pilgrims encounters the Shrike, and others, in their own way. We finally learn the true nature of Rachel's decreasing age, and learn that Rachel's life is very complex. We also learn the nature of the Shrike and the Technocore. What of the Ousters, on their way to invading Human worlds? Are they prepared to conquer all mankind for reasons we have yet to fathom?

"The Fall of Hyperion" fully reveals the epic started in "Hyperion." This incredibly complex story is one of the best science fiction novels I have read in two decades. I compare this novel to Asimov's Foundation Trilogy and to Herbert's "Dune." There may be a few slow moments in this book, but those moments are necessary to set up the ending of this incredible novel. Be warned, this story is heavy going and will demand a lot of concentration to get to the end.

I enjoy a challenging science fiction book, and these two books are challenging. The novels are Dickensian in complexity. Read this omnibus only when you have the time and desire to read a story that requires intense concentration and analysis.

Mordant's Need: The Mirror of Her Dreams & a Man Rides Through, by STEPHEN DONALDSON

Terisa Morgan opens the series living a vacant life, supported by her father from afar and volunteering at a mission for lack of anything more purposeful to do with her time. She fills her apartment with mirrors so as to see her reflection and thus be constantly reassured of her existence. Geraden, an apprentice Imager (magician) from a land called Mordant appears in her apartment, searching for aid against a powerful enemy who has been plaguing Mordant with monsters translated from other worlds. As mirrors are inextricably linked with magic in Mordant, Terisa's home decor convinces him that he has stumbled into the lair of a powerful sorceress. He persuades her to accompany him back to the Castle Orison, where she finds herself embroiled in a morass of intrigue and danger from both the political plotting of a corrupt court and from the frightening magical creatures that appear without warning and can't seem to be defended against. Terisa is suddenly the center of attention, a position that she has never before held, which is not easy because Geraden is held in little regard at the castle; so court opinion naturally is divided on whether she should be taken seriously as a potentially powerful ally, threat, or treated as an object of ridicule and proof of Geraden's perceived incompetence. She must deal with the ever earnest Geraden, the senile King Joyse and his headstrong daughters, the mad Adept Havelock, the inimical Castellan Lebbick, Geraden's mostly-well-meaning brothers, the lascivious Master Eremis and the rest of the disorganized group of Imager masters Geraden belongs to known collectively as the Congery. Unsurprisingly, the story twists and turns, very little is as it seems in Orison and various groups plot to depose King Joyse and take over Mordant. The mysterious rogue Imager is still sending magical creatures to cause destruction seemingly without rhyme or reason; the High King's Monomach, the best swordsmen in the land, appears in Orison....

Revival of a very entertaining fantasy/fiction story
By G. Kline
These books aren't new. "The Mirror of Her Dreams" came out in 1986, followed by "A Man Rides Through" in 1987. I was fortunate to know someone who was reading both of these books at the time, who later loaned them to me.

Recently, I came to recall these books and thought about reading them once more. I managed to pick up two used hardcover versions on "that auction site", but getting them both in this combined volume set is a little more convenient. It was great fun to become acquainted again with these characters and entertaining story.

I'm not surprised that it was published again, but even more importantly as a set. You really can't have one novel without the other--the are intimately intertwined. The first book ends with a major cliffhanger, and the second one requires the buildup of the first to make any sense.

Books are more entertaining when we can relate to them. What better way than to take a modern day human being and put them in an entirely different world, rather than having the main character as someone from a totally different existence? How do you survive and cope with the totally foreign situation? Who can you trust? It's not an entirely new idea. In fact, the movie "Time Bandits" did that very thing only a few years before (1983, I think). A small boy is essentially kidnapped by a bunch of dwarfs and taken from his small modern day life on an amazing journey through various points in history.

Terisa Morgan is living a humdrum life as a secretary for a reverend. She is beautiful, but so withdrawn that hardly anybody notices her. In a rather lame attempt at compensation, Terisa has her apartment lined mostly with mirrors, as a reminder to herself that she exists. Little does she know how her understanding of mirrors will soon change dramatically. She is literally taken through a mirror, brought into a medieval kind of realm with astonishing qualities about it. This meek and passive woman must now become assertive, for the first time in her life.

The main thrust of the story is the kingdom of Mordant that is facing various perils. The monarchy is in disarray, and there's a pressing need to find an augured champion to come to the rescue. The Conjury, a team of men who can craft special mirrors and perform image translations, was working on the idea of translating a champion into their midst and inadvertently pulled Terisa Morgan into their realm. Who is she? Is she a mistake, or does she have some special powers as yet unseen? Is she real, or just an artifact created by an imager?

The two main story arcs are the concern over saving the kingdom of Mordant and Terisa either finding her purpose or her way back home. They both unfold in very interesting and unexpected ways. Although the prose is a bit too generous, at times too detailed on minor story elements, and the plots a bit convoluted, the story is gripping. There is great humor in this work as well. Donaldson blends it in very well at appropriate timings. And while mysteries are identified and revealed in time, there is a very long mystery arc about King Joyse which adds depth to the whole story.

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

The first volume is rather slow, partly due to the need for building up the background/setting and slowly working up the momentum of several sub plots. You will be tempted to skim at times--don't feel bad about it. The second volume picks things up a bit, although it does dodder on a few trivialities here and there, and finally wraps up the whole story with a rather large climax. It's kind of a predictable outcome, in that you have so much invested in the hero and heroine where you couldn't possibly see them fail. But how they win is what makes the story so enjoyable.

***

All in all, I think this is a very entertaining work by Donaldson and would love to see it made into a movie someday.

Ground-breaking experimental fantasy series
By J. Shurin
Mordant's Need is a two-volume series published by Stephen Donaldson. The first volume, The Mirror of Her Dreams, was published in 1986 and the conclusion, A Man Rides Through, in 1987.

Donaldson has never shied away from writing challenging genre fiction. His lengthy Thomas Convenant series has been captivating and/or alienating readers since 1977. In science fiction, Donaldson's Gap series was five volumes of terrifyingly brutal 'space opera', loosely based on Wagner's Ring Cycle. And, not to leave mystery out, under the pseudonym of Reed Stephens, Donaldson created the self-destructive alcoholic private eye Mick Axbrewder.

Mordant's Need is, compared to the rogue's gallery above, the most accessible thing that Donaldson has ever written. It is superficially a traditional high fantasy novel, with all the appropriate trappings of the genre. The protagonist is Terisa, a lonely woman from the 'real world'. She is drawn into a magical realm where she meets Geraden, a lowly apprentice with a heart of gold. The two discover that they have great sorcerous powers and are just what the Mysterious Prophesy required. The land is saved, etc. etc.

Donaldson connects the dots in a strange ways. Mordant's Need isn't a series about dramatic action as much as it is about tense inactivity. The (Good) High King Joyse has seemingly gone mad - leaving a power vacuum as the land of Mordant is attacked from all sides. The books almost entirely take place from within the walls of Joyse's castle, with Terisa and Geraden as witnesses to countless intrigues. Terisa and Geraden scramble desperately to make sense of everything around them - no sooner are they finally sure that they're pointed in the right direction than something spins them around again.

Donaldson's plots are nothing short of genius - everything, no matter how nonsensical, connects. He's generous with the exposition, but cleverly waits until the appropriate time to distribute it. The reader, like Terisa and Geraden, is frustrated and rewarded in turn.

Although the convoluted plotting is worthy of mention (and praise), the heart of Mordant's Need is in its theme - that of identity. All magic in the land is done with mirrors. Terisa, who is already a little bonkers in the mundane world, is pulled through a mirror to help Mordant. As a result, she's caught in the middle of a philosophical discussion regarding her own existence. As improbable as it may seem, Terisa may not actually be real. And, as awkwardly constructed as it may make her character, Terisa spends half the time believing (or disbelieving) the fiction of her own existence.

In a purely intellectual sense, the discussion of identity is fascinating, and Donaldson does a strong job of keeping the issue threaded throughout the books. Terisa is most brave, and most active, when she doubts that she is real - on the simply level, what does she have to lose? However, these periods of false bravery are rare and far-between. However empty she feels, she can't entirely shed the notion of her own existence. She is most comfortable being a passive observer or, better yet, authority-deprived object. In the former role, she's not called-upon to make a difference. And in the latter, she can be assured of her continued existence if only because things are happening to her.

Donaldson's intention seems to be to make this as deliberately complicated as possible. And he succeeds.

On one hand, Terisa's ongoing question of identity is infinitely more interesting (and more rewarding... and more intelligent...) than the traditional high fantasy approach of the lead character's token 'Why me?'. (Answer: Because the Prophesy says so.) On the other hand, Donaldson slightly overreaches himself with Terisa's character. Simply put, she's a woman. And, as the reader is constantly reminded, an attractive one. Her issues of identity and authority quickly become entangled with issues of sexuality.

As well as being an object of magical destiny and political intrigue, Terisa's therefore also an object of attraction. This additional level could work, but doesn't. Bizarrely, Terisa spends a great portion of her time wrestling with the fact that she's attractive to the opposite sex. As a result, the reader is condemned to an endless amount of painfully adolescent 'does he really like me?' whining. Compared to the other, existential, self-doubt at the core of the book, Terisa's pubescent mewling strikes a false and affected note.

Mordant's Need is an experimental series that successfully shows how fantasy tropes and archetypes can be used to explore complicated questions. Donaldson uses magic throughout the books - not to paper over any holes in the plot, but as a mechanism smoothly integrated with the overarching theme. The result is something almost (but not quite) a parable. And for pure entertainment value, it is difficult to stick with two volumes of an intentionally passive hero. Mordant's Need is a rare example of a series too flawed to be great, but too thoughtful to be discounted.

From Library Journal
Agnes of God (1982), a somber, rather slow three-character tragedy, concerns Agnes, 21, a deranged nun accused of murdering her newborn. A court-appointed psychiatrist, an atheist, and the Mother Superior spar ineffectively on theology and miracles and discuss their lives. Twice the doctor puts Agnes under hypnosis, revealing a tortured childhood, denials, and, finally, a confession and improbable motive. As scripted in this new recording of the play, Agnes sings many plainsongs, with which Emily Bergl, a fine actor, is plaintive; Barbara Bain's Mother Superior is rock solid; Harriet Harris, the doctor, tends to be flat instead of neutral in interrogations but is better in monologs. The screenplay for the 1985 film adaptation also by Pielmeier omitted monologs and extraneous dialog and added interesting characters and a happy ending; its video version is better suited to the general public. This audio program is recommended for libraries serving film and drama students rather than for popular consumption. Gordon Blackwell, Eastchester, NY

Review
A murdered newborn is found in a convent, the product of a resident nun who denies both the baby and any sexual experience. Part mystery, part theology, part psychology, the play shifts from the mother to the protective mother superior to a lapsed Catholic psychiatrist with troubles of her own. This LA Theatre Works production succeeds on many levels as the three women strive to understand what happened and why, and the resulting impact on their lives. All three principals perform their difficult roles with great skill: They scream, they shout, they interrupt, they whisper and whimper, yet remain totally in command of their audioplay. AGNES OF GOD, a Broadway and film bestseller, is equally good in this one-cassette format. T. H. --AudioFile Magazine

From the Inside Flap
In this contemporary murder mystery, set within the confines of a convent, Agnes is a devout, innocent young nun accused of infanticide. As a psychiatrist, herself a lapsed Catholic, and the Mother Superior struggle over Agnes' fate, the play plunges deeply into the mystery of faith and the consequence of truth.

Includes an interview with Dr. Kevin Orlin Johnson, author of "Why Do Catholics Do That."

An L.A. Theatre Works full-cast performance featuring Barbara Bain, Emily Bergl and Harriet Harris.

Absolutely riveting audio version
By Michael K. Halloran
John Pielmeier's play "Agnes of God" opened on Broadway in 1982 with a cast that included Elizabeth Ashley, Geraldine Page, and Amanda Plummer. It tells the tale of a young novice who has been sheltered from the world all her life. One night, she is found unconscious in her convent room after having given birth to a baby, which is found dead in a wastebasket. This shocking incident gives rise to a whole set of questions: Who was the father? Why did no one know about Agnes' pregnancy? Is she really as simple and naive as she seems? And, most importantly, who killed the baby?
The play features three terrific roles for actresses: Agnes, the Mother Superior, and the court-appointed psychiatrist, Dr. Livingstone. The script is not without its flaws: the science vs. faith conceit is played out a little too simply, and some of the symbolism is heavy-handed to say the least (the doctor trades her obsessive chain-smoking for an obsessive fixation on Agnes). The play was also made into a rather tepid movie which unwisely opened up the claustrophobic office/convent interview scenario and added superfluous characters and subplots. Meg Tilly and Anne Bancroft both earned much-deserved Oscar nominations for their excellent performances, but Jane Fonda is miscast and less than obsessive in the role of Dr. Livingstone.
This audio recording, however, makes one forget any flaws in the script and completely erases any sour memory of the misjudged film version. It is gripping in every way. Harriet Harris carries the show in a bravura performance as Dr. Livingstone ("X-files" fans will remember her from the terrific "Eve" episode). She is not afraid to be curt and unlikable, and she carries a chip on her shoulder the size of a Buick. Every shifting emotion is immediately audible in her highly expressive voice: wry condescenion, bitter regret, volcanic rage, and aching sorrow all come into play. Her final, gut-wrenching monologue is absolutely harrowing. With a performance like Harris', visuals become unnecessary.
Harris' force-of-nature portrayal could easily overwhelm less accomplished co-stars, but Barbara Bain and Emily Bergl more than hold their own. Bain is sympathetic and likable as the Mother Superior, a welcome contrast to Harris' caustic doctor. She matches Harris step for step in their emotional confrontations and gives equal weight to the Mother's deep sense of spirituality and the earthier, more secular side of the character. This is no caricature, but a flesh-and-blood human being.
Emily Bergl (who was the one bright spot in the otherwise limp "The Rage: Carrie 2") makes a perfect Agnes: childlike, eager to please, and slightly otherworldly. She gives her ludicrous answers to the doctor's questions in such a matter-of-fact manner that one simply can't write her off as insane. Because of her utter conviction in everything she says, we as listeners must at least consider the fact that the visions and voices she sees and hears might be real. Bergl also fully commits to her emotional moments with the doctor. Harris is often so brutal with the psychologically fragile Bergl that one almost wishes Child Protective Services would come in and whisk Agnes away. Bergl's singing voice -- an important aspect of Agnes' character -- is childlike and unspoilt, adding to the sense of Agnes' purity.
Sound effects are used sparingly but judiciously, such as the flick of a lighter letting the audience know that the doctor has lighted a cigarette. Credit must be given to director Nancy Malone, who has shaped the rhythm and pace of the piece with the expert skill of an orchestral conductor. Under her guidance, the three actresses sound like a finely-tuned ensemble, with Bain's earthy alto, Harris' reedy mezzo, and Bergl's soft-grained soprano playing together as exquisitely as virtuoso instruments. Audio theatre doesn't come any better than this.

I couldn't put it down it touched me so much
By A Customer
I read Agnes of God because I was doing a monologue from it for a drama exam and the night that I read the play I couldn't put it down. It's not a long read, but it really touched me. From the first page I was interested in each development of the plot and the characters. The imagery was haunting and even though it deals with many risque subjects, it's an essential read. Agnes of God is probably a play that has affected and moved me and one I'll never forget. Unfortunately I haven't seen a performance of it, but this I believe is truely one of the better plays out there.

William Inge burst upon the theatrical scene with this story of marital frustration which erupts in violence. Doc and Lola had an indiscreet affair, she became pregnant and, compelled to marry her, he gave up his medical studies, forfeited his future and settled down to a life of quiet desperation with the simple, homey Lola, who lost the child but has remained Doc's steadfast if slatternly wife. Now a chiropractor and recovering alcoholic, Doc's sobriety is tested when Marie, a young college student becomes their boarder bringing new life and long-dormant hostilities to the surface of Doc and Lola's troubled marriage. Shirley Booth won the Tony, NY Drama Critics Award and later the Oscar as Best Actress of The Year for her compelling performance as Lola.

Bleak Portrait of Lost Youth and Lost Opportunities
By Gary F. Taylor
Debuting in 1950, William Inge's COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA became one of the theatrical touchstones of that decade, an unexpected bleak portrait of disillusionment and sexual frustration in middle America. The play requires a single set and requires eight men and three women. The play is performed in two acts.

The title COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA, refers to a dog, which has been missing for some time when the play begins. As the play progresses, Sheba becomes a metaphor for lost youth and missed opportunities. The play concerns an aging married couple, Doc Delaney and his wife Lola. During his college years Doc became sexually involved with Lola; when she became pregnant he gave up his studies to become a doctor, married her, and became a chiropractor. But Lola lost the baby and could not have others, and twenty years later Doc is a recovering alcoholic and Lola is a trivial slattern. The couple rent a room to college student Marie; Doc both fantasizes about her and idolizes her, but when he discovers that Marie is involved with a studly but superficial young man, Doc explodes into an alcohol-fueled rage. The resulting explosion between Doc and Lola leaves both with the realization that they are who they are, and there is no going back.

This was Inge's first play, and the structure is a little clunky. Inge would produce significantly smoother works with PICNIC and BUS STOP, but whatever the merits of his individual plays, he is very much one of the great voices of the 1950s American theatre, in the same league with Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. Recommended.

Come Back Little Sheba Still Powerful
By M. Michele Phillips
I have to direct this play and while it is not a favorite, it is a classic of the American Theatre. I so appreciate the fact that I can order a production copy (with set diagram, properties list and costume plot, along with the text itself. Invaluable.

Excellent character study
By (=^_^=) Broncos Fan
The 50's play, Come back Little Sheba focuses on conflict between a married couple where Lola wishes to recapture her youth of the past while her husband, Doc, doesn't want to relive the past with its bad memories. It's one of those plays that makes you think about and assess character personalities.

The setting is a semi respectable neighborhood in a Midwestern city. Lola, 40, is now frumpy, sloppy, depressed, lonely and, at times annoying and clingy to anyone. Doc, on the other hand is neat and an alcoholic who quit drinking over a year. They have a boarder in their small, Marie, a college student who is popular, attractive, vibrant, and in love - all the things Lola wishes to recapture.

Little Sheba is the pet dog who vanished into thin air, and Lola uses this metaphor as it reflects her own life, as the youthful Lola has too, vanished. Doc doesn't want to live in the past. The past was hard drunken times and he didn't become a "big M.D", but only a chiropractor. He lost previous investments and, he had to marry Lola but the baby died.

The boarder, Marie, is symbolic of Lola's youth, especially with being in love as Marie dates a young man Turk, but she will soon marry Bruce. Doc sees Marie as the daughter he never had as he becomes obsessed and seemingly overprotective in his thoughts about Marie's boyfriend. Thus, it leads him to the liquor that was in the cupboard for a year.

This is far better than anything Hollywood can capture on film. To see the original play acted out would be good, but the Shirley Booth movie doesn't allow one to steep into the characters. Playwright William Inge also wrote the 50's play, Picnic. .....Read the Play......Rizzo
