Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody (Gollancz SF S.) (GollanczF.), by Michael Gerber

Barry Trotter is 22 and has never left the Hogwash School of Magic - there's been no need; after all, G.K. Rollin's books about him have made him a millionaire, and Barry is perfectly happy to while away his days as a perpetual (loaded) student. The hoardes of Muddles who hang around outside Hogwash desperate to see him, touch him, are a bit of pain but he can deal with that. But then comes news that Hollywood is planning a film of Rollin's first book about Barry. And they all know what that means: loss of creative control; cheap merchandising; millions more Muddles swarming over Hogwash. Barry agrees a plan with Bumblemore: the film must be stopped. BARRY TROTTER AND THE SHAMELESS PARODY is an incisive and hilarious parody of the Harry Potter phenomenon. There are slyly affectionate digs at the books themselves but Gerber's main scorn is directed at the monster that the Harry Potter franchise has become. The book has a creative energy all its own introducing characters and a hilarious take on magic that even J.K Rowling might appreciate.

As Good As The Original
By C. Stan
Any Harry Potter fan knows the feeling you get when you read an HP book for the first, second, third, 20th time, etc. Though this book is a work of parody, it is extremely affectionate to the original source. The settings are rich(in their own way) and the characters lively. The theme of this book is sort of the idea that the Harry Potter series was once a pure and clean thing, loved by everyone who read the books, but now is a cash cow owned by corporations and that we should all try to look back to what the books really mean, not the standardized travesty that companies have made it into. I think that the crumbling settings and nasty characters in this book are a sort of metaphor, the idea that they were once the pure things of the HP books but are now twisted, lustful things that shouldn't really still exist. I really love this book because of the theme. It definitely touches the source of the HP books and gives you the magical feeling of reading one.

Barry...
By Lil Rags
Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody is a great book, it's filled with....general funny stuff!!

Although it is hard to follow, even though it's the 1st Barry Trotter book, it's as though there have been ones before as it refers to things that have happened in the past. Another annoying thing is that every name that was in the normal Harry Potter book has been replaced with a comical name for example:-

Ron Weasly - Lon Measly

Hermione Granger - Ermine Cringer

Snape - Snipe

Gryffindor - Grittyfloor

Lord Voldemort - (My favorite!)....Lord Valumart

etc.

And it's a little more mature than Harry Potter.. so Parents! Read before letting like 7 year olds read

Great parody - for adults only!
By C. Shepard
Michael Gerber has officially earned a warm fuzzy spot in my heart with his Barry Trotter parody books. Even the obligatory legal text in the front pages is funny!

The Shameless Parody follows Barry in his post-Hogwash years as he tries to come to terms with being an adult with a child of his own in Hogwash -- one that's barely magical at all. Despite being a blatant poke at many facets of the Harry Potter books, it has its own unique storyline filled with challenges and surprises enough to allow it to stand on its own, story-wise. You just don't know how things will turn out for Barry and his friends. The humor in it is downright raunchy at points so I wouldn't suggest this book for anyone under the age of consent but adults who take life too seriously may find the Potty humour a bit offensive. I suppose I'd suggest this book for college students and immature adults like me.

From Publishers Weekly
Accomplished acting is as difficult to describe as good music, but Coveney, the drama critic for the London Observer , succeeds admirably in this chatty biography of British actress Maggie Smith. He traces her artistic journey from her early years in revues to her West End stardom, dissecting many of her performances and capturing the uniqueness of her technique and style ("widely imitated in other people's conversations, she remains entirely inimitable"). Coveney reveals the story behind her "flamboyant withdrawal from the celebrity circuit" and her five-year absence from Britain to lead the classical company at Stratford, Ontario, and to make movies in L.A. where she won Oscars for her portrayals in California Suite and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie . The author also discusses Smith's enduring admiration for American writer J. D. Salinger, her preference for Brian Bedford as her leading man on stage, her popularity as a "camp pin-up," and takes a glance at Smith's two marriages. She was named Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1989. Photos.

From Booklist
Coveney's loving biography of a woman so shy we may never see an autobiography is warm and, for the most part, uneventful. Best known for her Oscar-winning performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Smith has led what most would consider a good life, free from too much controversy--a life in which she would eventually wed her longtime amour, Beverley Cross, after an unsuccessful marriage to actor Robert Stephens had yielded two sons. (The couple was billed as the "New Lunts" during the 1960s, but her career took off while his fizzled. Eventually, so did the marriage.) Smith had a rather unremarkable childhood; it wasn't until she moved from college to Britain's National Theatre that the sparks began to fly, for there she met her nemesis, Laurence Olivier. Beyond that relationship, however, most of the actors who worked with Smith speak of her in glowing terms; she returns the compliments. Anglophiles and National Theatre buffs may find the book a juicy morsel, but Smith's film forays have been too few to entice many mainstream moviegoers. Joe Collins

I first discovered Maggie Smith in the VIPs & have loved watching her ever since. This book shows why she is still an acting treasure. Highly recommended, especially for those not as familiar with her early career & her steady climb to the top of her profession.

Baby Taj, by Tanya Shaffer

Comedy / Characters: 2m, 3f / "I've dreamed you for so long, I can hardly believe you're with me now. Yet here you are: a tiny human voyager, sleeping off the shock of migration..." The legendary Taj Mahal is the next assignment for Rachel, an American travel writer whose failed romances have led her to ask: Why not have the baby she craves - on her own? She finds unexpected answers - and larger questions - among the glittering legacies of India's past. Alive with the sounds and colors of a remarkable country, this bittersweet comedy of mischievous matchmaking raises provocative questions about love, friendship, family, and what it means to be ready to be a parent. Baby Taj had developmental readings at Jeffrey Bihr Studio in Berkeley, California; The Lark Theatre in New York City; and TheatreWorks in Mountain View, California. It premiered at TheatreWorks in October, 2005, in a production directed by Matt August, to great critical acclaim. It was selected as one of the Top Ten Shows of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle, the Oakland Tribune, and the San Jose Mercury News, and nominated for an American Theatre Critics' Association Steinberg Award and a Bay Area Theatre Critics' Award. "A captivating inquiry into love and freedom... Thrives on a witty, probing clash between freethinking modernity and tradition." -Robert Hurwitt, San Francisco Chronicle "A bundle of cross-cultural joy... Marries the breezy cynicism of the now with the eternal power of India... [Shaffer's] ear for mod-groovy lingo gives the play a to-die-for sparkle." -Karen D'Souza, San Jose Mercury News "...Filled with a savvy traveler's enthusiasm for the cultural and historical rewards of her journey." -Chad Jones, Oakland Tribune "...Depicts the characters in all their contradictions and with such clarity that the humorous result is full of delicate reflections on caring and family." -Marianne Messina, Silicon Valley Metro "It's refreshing to come across a playwright who is able to write so honestly about life...Witty, poignant and frequently funny... It's hard not to get swept away." -Julie O'Shea, Mountain View Voice "Provocative and true, laced with snappy dialogue..." -Jeanie Forte, Palo Alto Weekly "A beautiful play...[Shaffer] has brilliantly integrated theatricality through the story of...the building of this famous fairy tale palace." -Richard Connema, Talkin Broadway

About the Author
Tanya Shaffer has spent time helping human rights groups in Guatemala, picking coffee in Nicaragua, and even digging ditches in the Czech Republic. She lives in San Francisco. Tanya first wrote about her experiences in Africa in the "Wanderlust" section of Salon.com where her articles were extremely well-received and popular. Many of those pieces have been reprinted in anthologies and some have been incorporated into Somebody's Heart Is Burning. The chapter in the book called "Sand Angels" served as the basis for a one-woman stage production entitled "Let My Enemy Live Long!" which she has performed to critical acclaim in over 40 cities during the last three years. The show won the San Francisco Bay Area Critics Circle Award for solo performance and ran in San Francisco for more than six months, before moving on to Seattle and other West Coast venues, including a month-long run in San Diego in February of this year. She is working now to bring the show to New York City.

Great book for high schoolers.

Story from the 30s is still a Great Read
By Lisa Shea
I picked up this book because it was mentioned in my great-grandmother's diary from 1941. Written in the 30s, it tells the tale of a young Scottish doctor in the 20s, as he goes from a small-town doctor in a rough situation to a well-paid London doctor with a fancy office.
The story's written with intelligence, as the doctor ponders various ways to deal with the bureaucracy he faces. He deals with incompetent doctors, old doctors that have no desire to learn new treatments, young doctors more concerned with money and prestige than patient care.
And, as he gets absorbed into the system, the doctor begins to be lured in by the money. He starts to prescribe the 'easy' solution to patients, even if it's not the right answer, so that they're happy and he gets more cash. He does finally realize, in the end, that working for the patients is more important than gaining lots of cash, but only after some hard lessons.
I have a few small complaints with the story. One is that the wife could have been a really interesting character, but she's a little flat. She is sad when he becomes money-hungry, and draws back, but that's it. She was a schoolteacher when he met her, and it's made clear that she's very intelligent. But still she just sort of goes along with him, making his meals, wishing things could be better, but far be it for her to actually help out. She tries to get his friends to see him one night to bring back his old ways, but when that fails, "ah well".
My other complaint is that he slides far too easy from a passionate patient-first attitude into a "cash is nice" mentality. But that was necessary for the plot to progress.
Definitely a great book to read to learn about life in the 20s to 40s, from the small towns of Wales to the busy streets of London. Interesting details about the damage that mines caused to the lungs of the mineworkers, and the ways that doctors worked with each other and treated their patients. A great read!

An excellent British comedy/whodunnit/mystery...
By Heath Mecham
This is one of those plays where afterwards, it gives you chills... that is, IF you understand it.

I played in this play last year as one of the lead roles, 'Moon', and learning all the little secrets within this magnificent peice was simply astounding.

Within this small script, you can find so many small stories on the side, so many things to help your character, and its really an excellent story.

After seeing it for the first time, you'll understnad the story as the plot unfolds, but you'll want to see it again... just in case.

The Real Inspector Hound is an awesome play, and I reccomend anyone to put it on!

Theatrical sleight of hand by a master.
By Lewis T. Fitch
As is frequently the case in a Stoppard play, the action is not where you think it is, and there may be several stories going on at the same time. This is open enough to be followed, and amusing in the process.

HE JUST DIDN'T GET IT!
By rater25
It's sad that the one-star reviewer on this page just didn't get it. It happens at some point to all of us. Compton-Burnett is an unusual writer, true. She is not a "realist". "Do people really speak this way?" he asks. Strangely enough, there are no actual people inside the covers of this book - only characters. And characters in literature speak any damned way the author pleases. Did King Henry IV speak in verse? This may not be one of Ivy's top five (I particularly recommend "Manservant and Maidservant"), yet it is still quite distinctive and enjoyable. But it's a highly literary fantasy/satire. If you enjoy Peacock, Firbank, Beerbohm or Schuyler, this is your cup of tea. "Germinal" it's not.

Yes they did
By Loughran F. O'connor
I know that many Americans have trouble interpreting British social customs, it takes a
bit of effort. Visiting Britain in the company of other Americans doesn't help.....English people
will use "received English" to speak with you, out of their attempts at "fairness" (an unknown
idea in the US) --- what they feel is polite distance.
Much better to visit alone, live with an English family, go to the non-tourist areas of the country,
spend a lot of time in out of the way pubs and just listen. Don't talk! They will shut down, and
you won't even know it.
Burnett uses very subtle satire...... we must turn our thinking around to understand this. James
is a VERY different writer...with all his density, you will not discover satire in James' books.
Try "The Golden Bowl"...one of his most complex. And he is still an American, observing the
English from the outside in.
Read other English novels, 1900- 1940 to get closer to Burnett. Not the famous ones. Try some
"Jeeves and Wooster" by Wodehouse. Even "Maurice" or any book about the highly isolated,
inbred upper classes. That's where the language comes from. Understand that first, then you
can see the satire. Don't expect Burnett to come to you...you must listen and go to her point of view.
Try to enjoy it, that's what she wanted. And yes, they really DID talk that way, even as recently
as the 1950's. Oh yes...try some English films from the the '30s and '40s.

An virtually self-indulgent kind of book
By David Weinberg
"The rich are different from us," Scott Fitzgerald is reputed to have once said to Ernest Hemingway -- to which the celebrated Nobel Prizewinning author is said to have (obviously with tongue in cheek) replied: "Yes, they have more money." Now whether Hemingway was speaking in a kind of jest, or whether the whole thing, like Oscar Wilde's declaration of his genius at the New York Customs House, was apocryphal, we will never know for sure; yet the point is well taken.
The rich ARE different. But only in an economic sense. Human nature remains human nature. And it seems the novelist's job is to illuminate the conundrums of the human condition for the reader. So why do Compton-Burnett's characters speak in what is best described as an almost inscrutable language? Yes, the characters in her novels are quite different, but it's difficult to believe people do or have ever spoken like this; it's difficult for the reader to identify with or sympathize over characters such as these being portrayed here. It's a Jacobean or a Herculean struggle for the reader to read this odd, quirky, mostly dialog-laden prose of this strange, albeit unique writer.
So to any reader comptemplating dipping into this author's almost impregnable prose, unless doing it out of an academic exercise or personal sense of obligation, I would issue a strong caveat -- be advised: don't. Not unless you're the masochistic type or the type who enjoys the monumental struggle of trying to ferret out meaning from virtually every sentence, having to read twice or thrice, so much so, that quite often the reader is left adrift in a sea of uncertainty as to where he or she is in the course of the story; you'd be well-advised to pass this up.
Still, I am aware that there are reviewers, readers and critics who swear by this author, as being an acute observer of the human condition. Fair enough. But what I would want is to read an author who does not take language and twist and bend it into an instrument of his or her own choosing and give it an almost alien life to that found in this one in which we live. To those who find meaning in her works for them, I say fine, and best of luck. This reviewer doesn't. For communication should be of more substance than merely the esoteric. It should speak to all.
Nevertheless, there are artists who are considered great and are virtually laden with layers of interpretation and enigma, providing commentators and scholars with plenty of work to last some of them -- and us -- a lifetime: Joyce, Faulkner, Proust, Picasso, and on and on.
Let there be no mistake: I am not a stranger to difficult writers, having worked my way through a good portion of them. Start with the works of Shakespeare and go on to that of Faulkner, Henry James (with the exception of WHAT MASIE KNEW, which is one of those books James wrote, like the writer under discussion, which seems to be a kind of closet drama and an insoluble puzzle) and Joyce's ULYSSES, the latter twice and well understood. Even Thomas Pynchon in our own time, who is quite a challenge; even he yields much pleasure, much wit. Never, I say, had I had the kind of comprehension struggle with those mentioned, and even boredom I had with Compton-Burnett. Besides, I have been through a great deal of 18th and 19th century British literature; yet never have I encountered the kind of resistance I get with this author.
A FAMILY AND A FORTUNE is the kind of novel one rejoices in seeing come to a merciful conclusion. I think perhaps a large part of the problem rests more with the reader than the writer. Perhaps. For I suspect this is a woman's book, with a woman's perspective and a woman's sensibility. Consider, for example, this kind of sentence:
"Oh, don't let us joke about it. Do let us turn serious eyes on a serious human situation."
Oh. Do people really speak this way? Even English people of the upper classes? I'm not persuaded. Why not say something like this: "Oh, let's not be funny, but do be serious about this." There are oh so many other examples of this kind of thing that could have been cited. But I'll spare the reader further examples.
This reviewer has been visiting the U.K. for over a fifteen-year period in summers and has never had the kind of epic struggle in understanding them (except in Scotland) that I find here.
Again, I cannot recommend this author to most readers who read for pleasure, which, after all, is the goal of almost any book that purports to be published to be read. The other kind is the kind that the writer writes for the writer's own benefit. In other words, a self-indulgent undertaking. But its author is gone, and like the Faulkners, the Jameses, et al. of this world, will never return to remedy and make clear what, in many respects, should have been made clear for the reader in its original incarnation. The only reason I embarked on this arduous struggle is the fact that I had a professor -- highly regarded and respected in his time in matters of taste and subtlety -- who mentioned this in the context of a lecture on MACBETH. In short, I wish he hadn't.

An All-Time Classic
By A Customer
This book is one of the all-time greatest works of fiction, combining suspense, romance, and character development, all wrapped up in a mystery that is literally not resolved until the last page.
Modern readers should treat this story as a period piece of sorts; American readers in particular should bear in mind the differences between British and American cultures, and also the historical differences (Rebecca was published in 1938), otherwise they are apt to find the story 'slow' or 'dull.'
Like any great mystery writer, du Maurier throws out subtle clues in the first third of the story; about halfway through, she begins to resolve these clues, and from then on, the story races at full steam. *Don't let* the seemingly slow introduction stop you from finishing the book; patient readers will be well- rewarded when they see how brilliantly du Maurier sets up her surprises.
The story revolves around the unusual marriage of the young, unworldly narrator (whose first name is never revealed, one of the book's charming idiosyncrasies)to the brooding 'landed gentleman,' Maxim de Winter. When she arrives at his grand country manor, Manderly (the house is perhaps the book's most potent character), she is immediately confronted by the other characters' feelings about Rebecca, Maxim de Winter's flamboyant late wife.
Perhaps du Maurier's greatest accomplishment, character-wise, is the way she develops Rebecca, who is already dead when the main action of the story begins, and never really appears 'on-screen,' so to speak. Rebecca is very much alive in the memories of Maxim, the house servants, friends and family members, but most crucially, of her personal maid, Mrs. Danvers (and also of Rebecca's sleazy cousin, Jack Favel). It is Mrs. Danvers who becomes the greatest nemesis of the narrator, and who makes the frightened young woman feel utterly unwanted and unloved in her new home. If Rebecca truly does haunt Manderly, Mrs. Danvers is her conduit to the world of the living.
After a treacherous episode that almost brings the narrator to the breaking point, a string of coincidences alters everything; the narrator learns the truth about what turns out to be a lot of mistaken assumptions. In the process, she herself grows into a far more confident person. The last quarter of the story is an absolute masterpiece, as the action takes one turn, then another, then another. And even when it seems that all the clues have been resolved, du Maurier saves one last whammy for the final page.
I first read this book twenty years ago, and it made more of an impression on me than just about anything else I've read since. I re-read it from time to time, and gain a new insight with every perusal.
In short, Rebecca is a wonderful, wonderful novel, and not to be missed. I can't recommend it highly enough-- read it, linger over it, enjoy it, and read it again. It's a true literary achievement.

"We can never go back to Manderley again..."
By Kona
This riveting tale of fear, suspicion, and love opens as the unnamed narrator reminisces about her former home, the grand English estate, Manderley. She had been young and shy, a lady's companion, when she met the wealthy recent widow, Maxim de Winter, fell in love with him, and married him in a matter of weeks. They returned to his home, where she was immediately overwhelmed with the responsibilities of running the house and dealing with her forbidding housekeeper as well as the memory of Maxim's first wife, Rebecca. She had been beautiful, sophisticated, and supremely confident, and the narrator felt lost and helpless in comparison. Her new husband was strangely distant to her, until a horrible secret was revealed that would change their lives and the very existence of Manderley.

Daphne Du Maurier has crafted a wonderfully spooky story with remarkably little action, but a great deal of atmosphere and a steadily mounting feeling of impending doom. The ravishing Rebecca is never seen, and yet she is the main character, dominating the story with her passions and cruelty. Another main "character" is the great house itself, which is described in such fascinating detail that I felt as if I had walked its long hallways, descended its grand stairs, and had tea in the library. The narrator is purposely kept anonymous to contrast her with the larger-than-life Rebecca, and Maxim is a seriously flawed but lovable man.

Anna Massey does not just read the story, she performs it, delighting the listener with her upper-class British accent, giving a different voice to each character. I happily recommend this audio cassette version of Rebecca to those who enjoy exciting tales of suspense, psychological dramas, and mysteries.

A murder mystery like no other.
By Joanna Daneman
A young, naive woman who is the paid companion of an obnoxious rich woman is taken along to Monte Carlo. While she smarts under the rudeness and gauche behavior of her employer, she meets the dark, handsome widower Max de Winter.
What follows is a love story and a ghost story of a woman haunted by the powerful presence of the former mistress of Manderley. We never learn the name of the heroine as she marries Max, moves into the rigid but elegant life at Manderley and tangles with Mrs. Danvers, Manderley's fearsome housekeeper. What unfolds is not only a mystery but a story of obsessions and evil. The end is a shock.
Du Maurier created an unforgettable atmosphere of decaying beauty, frightening spirits and horror mixed with love and death. If you haven't read this, I am envious. You get to experience it for the first time.

Comedic Drama

Characters: 5 male, 2 female

King Henry II of England has three sons by Eleanor of Aquitaine: Richard, Geoffrey, and John. He wants the kingdom to stay united after his death, but all three sons want to rule and it is likely to be torn apart by revolution. Henry favors the youngest John, while Eleanor favors the eldest, Richard. Middle son Geoffrey hopes to play both ends against each other and come out on top. Henry would like to have another heir by his mistress Alais, but that would only add to the confusion. Uneasy is the head on which the crown lies, and uneasy the truce between a matchless king and queen. Often revived, this play was the basis of the Oscar-winning film which starred Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn.

"A work of intelligence, astringent wit, and much theatrical skill."-The New York Times

A Plantagenet family Christmas
By Mr. Joe
"For these ten years you've lived with everything I've lost and loved another woman through it all. And I'm cruel. I could peel you like a pear and God would call it justice ..." ‒ Eleanor to Henry

"I won't trade off Alais or the Aquitaine to this ‒ this walking pustule. No, your loving son will not." ‒ Richard to Henry, regarding John

"If you're a prince, there's hope for every ape in Africa." ‒ Geoffrey to John

"You're a cold and bloody bastard, you are, and you don't love anything." ‒ John to Henry

"(Think of you) much? I don't think of you at all." ‒ Henry to Geoffrey

"Who can forget his Roquefort smile, his absent brow, those apey eyes, that spoon-edged mind. Why him? Why him and never me?" ‒ Richard to Henry, regarding Henry's recently deceased eldest son

"We could tangle spiders in the webs you weave." ‒ Richard to Eleanor

"Well ‒ what shall we hang? The holly or each other?" ‒ Henry to his family

"If I decided to be trouble, Henry, how much trouble could I be" ‒ Alais

"One time, when I was very small, I watched some soldiers take their dinner pig and truss it up and put the thing, alive and kicking, on the fire. That's the sound I'm going to hear from you." ‒ Philip to Henry

The magnificent 1968 film The Lion In Winter, starring Peter O'Toole and Catherine Hepburn, is my forever favorite film. And the 2003 remake (The Lion in Winter) starring Patrick Stewart and Glenn Close is a close runner-up. Why? Because of the crackling dialogue delivered at a whiplash pace. Forget the visual part of the film; I can just listen to the audio over and over and over.

This small paperback is the original script for the stage version originally presented in 1966. It contains all of the dialogue of both (nearly identical) screenplays ‒ and a little more. The latter were edited slightly from the original to make for a tighter presentation, if such is possible.

Herein, the time is December 1183. Henry II, the King of England and overlord of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and half of France ‒ the first English monarch of the Plantagenet dynasty ‒ is holding his Christmas Court at his royal castle in Chinon, France. Joining him to bicker over the succession ‒ a decision made critical by the death of his eldest son, Henry the Young King, the previous June ‒ are his Queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and his sons Richard, Geoffrey and John. Henry favors the youngest for the throne, John. Eleanor favors the eldest, Richard. Geoffrey is favored by nobody but himself.

Complicating the season's festivities is the presence of King Philip II of France and his elder half-sister, Princess Alais, who had previously been betrothed to Richard by a treaty between Henry and King Louis VII, the biological father of both Philip and Alais. However, the princess has been Henry's mistress for several years while Eleanor has been shut away in a bleak English castle (Salisbury Tower) for leading a rebellion against her husband ten years before.

It's a warm and fuzzy coming-together. No need then for the dysfunctional Thanksgiving Day gathering of the clan as we celebrate it today.

Subtitled "A Comedy in Two Acts," this publication of the stage script by James Goldman includes set/scene designs for Philip's Room, Eleanor's Room, Hall, Cellar, and Henry's Room. (There's also a design for "Phetre's Room." Who the hell is Phetre? What am I missing?) And the script's dialogue is peppered with notations as to the actors' movements and positions on each set.

Presented on stage (as I saw it several weeks ago), THE LION IN WINTER is indeed a comedic drama; it elicits many laughs from the audience members as the actors naturally play to them. The films, on the other hand, especially the 1968 version, are much darker. Ambition and treachery are a serious and potentially deadly mix in 1183.

Do yourself a favor. Read or attend the play; see the movies. Most definitely view the O'Toole/Hepburn production (for which the latter won an Academy Award).

"Well, what family doesn't have its ups and downs?" ‒ Eleanor

Solid acting edition
By RonAnnArbor
Solid acting edition from Samuel French. Includes set designs from the Broadway show in the back of the book though they are hard to figure out. Note that this impression is the same old bad typeface that Samuel French has used in all of their acting editions since the world began so it does not have a clean modern typeface.

Ty Greene is a normal guy with three very big problems. In an unprecedented (for him) run of promiscuity, Ty has managed to impregnate three women in the span of one week: His ex-girlfriend, his 40-something married next-door neighbor, and his 18 year-old student. In this edgy comedy by playwright Rajiv Joseph, Ty's problems illuminate every triumph and failure of his life, and as the women in his world converge and figure out what's happened, Ty realizes that his life is adrift, and that he only has a limited time to try to piece it back together. All This Intimacy, which according to The New York Times has "a certain can't-look-away pull," is a comedy about friendship and lust and how the two don't mix.

Of Men and Monsters (S.F. Masterworks), by William Tenn

Giant, technologically superior aliens have conquered Earth, but humankind survives - even flourishes in a way. Men and women live, like mice, in burrows in the massive walls of the huge homes of the aliens, and scurry about under their feet, stealing from them. A complex social and religious order has evolved, with women preserving knowledge and working as healers, and men serving as warriors and thieves. For the aliens, men and women are just a nuisance, nothing more than vermin. Which, ironically, may just be humankind's strength and point the way forward.

In 1999 William Tenn was selected the Science Fiction Writers of America's Author Emeritus.

Rats, cockroachs and men.
By Michael Valdivielso
Eric was one of the tribe of Mankind. 128 people who lived together under the feet of the Monsters. 128 people who hated anybody outside their tribe. Strangers, outsiders, wild men, none of them could be trusted.

Yet Mankind one day planned to push the Monsters off the planet, the planet Earth, which the Monsters had invaded so many years ago. Yet how would they do this? With Ancestor-Science which had failed against the Monsters? Or with Alien-Science which they could not understand? Or did they need to try something new?

On top of that is the infighting, between those who have power and those who did not. Men fought men, plotted against their own leaders and made themselves allies of other tribes.

A amazing ending yet also a delightful and realistic one. WOW.

A timeless masterpiece.

I read it many years ago, and again now, and it enthralled me like the first time. My only beef is that the ending is a bit hurried. A must read for sci-fi lovers!

Men Are Shifted In Place From Of Mice And Men
By Antinomian
You can already tell a bit from the author just from his name, William Tenn, it's a pseudonym (a take-off on William Tell maybe) and the title of the book, a take-off from Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, only men are now in the place of mice, and in the place of the men... the Monsters, who are now the dominant species on earth. Actually humankind are more like roaches to the aliens, with the same aversion to humans as humans have to roaches. And like roaches, humans `infest' the house of the Monsters, and like humans, the Monsters have their own attempts at pest-control. The satire by Tenn that humans thrive as vermin, but never had the opportunity because they never before had such a `wealthy host' still has me reeling in my head from laughter, bewilderment, and a bit of realization that this could be a little true. Don't need to think about some ethereal, omnipotent being like a god, the Monsters take that niche, are quantifiable, and humans can sleep in peace in that respect without agonizing theological mental deliberations.

Humans are beaten badly in an invasion from an alien race of huge beings, as tall as 100 men shoulder on shoulder (500 feet, 200 meters or so) and the story is set centuries after the invasion. There is precious little information remaining of humanity before the invasion, but a few technological advances. Humans ultimate weapon is their ingenuity and their resilience. The ending is not quite what would be expected, but at the same time is perfect. The human mantra is To hit back at the Monsters and they get to do just that.

It's been written that William Tenn is a bit misogynist, a hater of woman. I don't think so. He is writing about how the human race had to revert somewhat back to savagery after a devastating defeat by aliens, so any Me Erik You Jane type of ritualistic mating patterns written are not that unrealistic. Also writing about what might be the female monsters being terrified of the roach or mice like humans is also not that unrealistic. One time when walking along the beach with my girlfriend at the time, who liked to show she could be tough in a masculine way, we came upon a stretch of sand where apparently thousands of baby crabs had recently hatched just beneath the sand and you could feel their little pincers nibbling at your feet. I just wanted to keep walking without squishing the things so they could live out their merry lives, but she just up and screeched and hip-hopped as fast as possible away from the shore. So I'm just guessing that more than a few human females might panic if an army of roaches or a group of mice took up attack formation around her and advanced towards her.

I read this book growing up and it had been my number one favorite for years. In rereading other favorites from my youth I've groaned in realizing how bad they were or were not as philosophical as I thought. So with my first time rereading Of Men and Monsters since then, I had a thought of a potential massive let-down of one of my favorites from its pedestal, but I can see why it had appealed to me then. It's a good book for a young adult as it deals with a rite of passage to adulthood (Initiation/Confirmation/etc) and is adventurous as it's set in the midst of an upheaval, or actual several upheavals. So there are travels and adventures, almost Tolkien-style, through Monster territory and more. And it has living zombies is a way too. And because of the Lilliputian style of the humans, it's something newly grown or growing children or young adults can identify with. As a creatively written book, also adults can enjoy it and appreciate the satire such as most of the tribe's children look just like the chief of the tribe, gee, I wonder why that is... and deals with power, the lust for power, jockeying for status, and so forth. So although I would give it 4 stars for adults, imho I can maintain a 5 star rating for young adults. I'm glad to see that the book is back in print although too bad it has the yellow book cover and not the drawing on my copy which shows a good rendition of the alien with its tentacles and praying mantis like head. The book version of Of Men And Monsters was released in 1968 using portions that were written as The Men In The Walls from 1963. Footfall by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle reference Tenn's The Men In The Walls, but in their novel they make sure that the alien invasion doesn't come to same kind of alien victory. Although the setting of the book can be considered dark, it takes an upbeat position and a viewing of are-things-really-as-bad-as-they-seem.

Miss Brodie is a teacher, a formidable figure who molds young minds to her form. And what is more, she is so intensely interesting that the girls admire her above all else. But Miss Brodie is not honest. She prevaricates and then tells the girls to do as she tells them, not as she does herself. She is having an affair with the music teacher and has had one with the art teacher, and this is not the most exemplary conduct. A fantastic letter which some of her students write in her name to her lover falls into the headmistress' hands.Dismissal is averted by Miss Brodie's indomitable pluck as she threatens to sue for calumny. One girl grows too wise too soon and turns on Miss Brodie.
