"I hate this planet. I really hate it."

Although titled "Prelude", the collected novellas don't reference the Deathstalker family - so you could skip them but then you'd miss some great stories and insights into the Empire and the Deathstalker Universe.
"Mistworld", the Empire's planetary nemesis, protected by renegade Espers' psychic defenses, is still not safe from imperial schemes and from its own outlaw inhabitants. Investigator Topaz, former Empire agent of destruction, is bent on revenge at all costs - even when the safety of the besieged planet is at stake.
"Ghostworld": On a world dead since the Empire wiped out the rebellious indigenous species, Mining Station 13 isn't answering any calls. A small recon team is sent to find out why. Don't dismiss the story as too derivative of the movie "Aliens" - the story's action filled and compelling.
"Hellworld: The Hell Squads were one-way planet scouts; made up of people who wouldn't be missed. The mission of these outcasts, failures, and forsaken heroes was decided if a newly discovered world was safe and colonizable. Wolf IV seemed to fit the bill, but that deserted alien city had to be investigated. Just to be sure...
All three novellas are quick, engaging reads. The action, intrigue and challenges keep the stories moving quickly. And while the characters often have the same job, they still feel distinct enough: the Investigators, by necessity, would recognize each other (they're the product of the same ruthless Empire training) but they're not clones. Call 'em "types," if you must.
Swords, force fields, psionic invisibility ( a "get-out-jail-free" card if there ever was one), Investigators, Empire Marines, disgraced Captains, renegade Espers - and even a Cat burglar!

One of the best science fiction horrors out there

This is one of my favourite horror novels, although technically it's three horror novels, and I have read it over three times at least. Although he has a habit of repeating his characters in each of these three novels, the premises are distinct enough that it's highly forgiveable. Each premise is disturbing, richly thought out, and well worth the time you spend on it. The scenes are well-described, the dialogue well-written and it's basically a brilliant read.
I could tell you the premises, but I don't want to spoil one of the best parts of this, so I'll just say that one of them bears a passing resemblance to the movie Virus and one involves mutations.

I have enjoyed all of the deathstalker series. they are full of twists and surprises. I bought the deathstalker series and will read and reread them over and over again. anyone who likes science fiction will enjoy all of them
