A Meaningful Drama

This play was similar to Samuel D. Hunter's other play which I have read, "The Whale". Both plays feature a male parent trying to reconnect with his child. And in each play the parent encourages the child to express himself/herself through a form of writing. This makes me wonder if there is something autobiographical in that aspect of the plays.
Hobby Lobby is an actual chain of crafts stores. I thought it was an invented business because I've never heard of Hobby Lobby.
The most interesting aspect of this play is its plea for understanding and sympathy for its evangelical protagonist. I can appreciate the need for spirituality since the intellect can be too cold and ruthless. You should never allow your intellect to cut through the ground on which you stand. I think we need to humor our need for something to believe in. Make something sacred and then defend it. Usually you have to defend it against the intellect. The alternative is explored in the Eugene O'Neill play "The Iceman Cometh", in which a ruthless desire to expose the truth undermines the basis of that which sustains us.

Faith Hope and Retail Work

I read this book based on a local PBS interview with Hunter in which he discusses growing up in Idaho and how that affected his writing. The play is set up in a hobby lobby story in meridian, one of the towns that are just outside the Boise area. The main character came to Meridian from the upper panhandle of Idaho, where something horrible happened and the main character wants to start afresh. The whole reason Will wants to work at Hobby Lobby is to meet his son he never knew. Will, the main character, is both broken and hopeful and it is up to the reader which one rules his life. This juxtaposition between brokenness and redemption to be what not only Will, but all the characters in the play, want.
The whole play is set in the break room of the store which adds to the tension. Here, failed relationships and new kinships take fold in a sterile and controlled environment where people act up just to get by. Why does Will want to meet his son now and what happen before that made Will move? In answering these questions, Will shows use what it means to be faithful.

Redeeming qualities? What is really being said?

This play was okay. I'm a theatre director, who enjoys scouting new American contemporary drama for little/community theaters I work with.
This is your typical believer vs. non-believer conflict that goes on in the break room of a local chain department store.
The colorful characters have some redeeming qualities, but by the end of the play, most of the characters fade into darkness... which may or may not what the playwright (Hunter) was going for.
What I'm getting at... is clarity. I'm not sure of what is being really said in this script. Maybe it's me. Maybe I need to re-read several times. Maybe it's one of those scripts that would be good in a discussion group.
I think there are some great short scenes that would be a good selection if you are doing scene study at a university or conservatory.
I think you should buy this play. Sometimes the best scripts are the ones that leave everyone debating and conversing, after the play is over.
