A Fascinating Book
By bridgett holder
The Blood Knot by Athol Fugard was a short but lengthy novel that captured my attention from the start. The ending of the book was a little complex but I enjoyed reading about the relationship of the brothers. The book was a easy read for teenagers like myself because the relationship between the brothers is relatable to other teens who have siblings. The audience that I would recommend to read this book would be young adults and older only because they could read deeper into the text better than younger kids. My interest level in this book was very high because it talked about brothers that were different skin complexions and that experienced different things. One of the brothers since he was light skinned had the opportunity to go visit different places and do better things where as the darker skinned brother was limited to things because he was dark which was one of the things that I found very interesting in the story. If I could criticize one part of the book it would have to be the ending. Even though I liked it and felt like it got the message about the blood knot across it seemed a bit rushed and could have used a little more thought. This text helped me see a different culture definitely by how it was written. It incorporated a lot of the language that they use in South Africa and the time period of the book took it back to a time where blacks were still oppressed and weren't free to do many and were limited to a lot of stuff. This text isn't something that I would typically read but I can definitely say it opened my mind up a lot and was a novel that I really enjoyed.

Black and White
By W. Zeranski
I saw the staging of this play well over ten years ago. The impression is still vivid. This two man production shows how half-brothers deal with life under Apartheid in South Africa. The key is one brother is "black" and the other is "white" thus the blood knot. To see and/ or read it is the only way to truly appreciate it. Together they live in squalor. The "black" brother works, the other stays at the shanty. The "white" brother tends to the needs of his brother when he comes home from work.
The clash of black and white comes into play when the plan is to have the "white" brother "go into the world" for the benefit of both. At this point, the racist world outside comes rushing in.

Bllood Knot is an excellently written play. Way ahead of its time! this script version reads easily. Vivid sense of the period in South Africa among those who lived there and the relationships between blacks and whites in a very unusual format.
