I laughed and cried all over again

With fifty years of memory on my brain's hard-drive, I can't actually remember when I first came across this volume. To say this book has left an indelible mark on my heart would be an understatement; it has had a profound effect on my life.
This book is `the perfect storm' for me. I have a couple paperbacks, a copy of the play script, an audio book, and the film. I love the era, the book love (not just reading but being around books, the library, haunting old book shops - talking about books and just being with the books) and also letter writing to friends. I have a couple of pen pals - my favourite is my friend Edel in Ireland (oh, how I long to jump on a plane and surprise her). I love most English things and NYC too (the theatre, museums...). Like Helene, my heart skips a beat as I approach my mailbox and see a package waiting for me. For me this book evokes a time and a place - a simpler way of life.
She was a near-do-well. Her book "Underfoot in Show Business" details her career. She only "just" made enough to get by. She wrote plays that were never produced. She wrote for "live" television, but when the studios learned how to "film" television everyone moved to Hollywood. Helene wrote educational books - biographies for children. This book, "84, Charing Cross Road," the play and film, her subsequent books and "Letter from New York" (her BBC radio broadcasts), kept her solvent, but never made her rich.
I found a hardbound edition at Powell's (in Portland, OR) that I would run into a burning house to save.
In "Breakfast at Tiffany's" Holly talks about 'the mean reds' - when she and the world are at odds and everything just seems wrong (which is different from 'the blues') and how she goes to Tiffany's..."84, Charing Cross Road" is where I go.
RE: the audio book: I've read the book several times (+ other books by Ms. Hanff): I adore the film - one of my all-time favorites. So, why did I even need to purchase this? Well, I'm always looking for short books like this one to take on trips (and such). This one, is just a little slice of heaven. I've been in love with Juliette Stevenson ever since "Truly, Madly, Deeply," and on through "Being Julia" and "Bend it Like Beckham." Her performance here is all you would expect. I laughed and I cried all over again. I can not recommend this one enough. Buy it - NOW.

A booklover's book

84, Charing Cross Road is a delightful collection of letters chronicling the 20-plus years' correspondence between screenwriter Helene Hanff and Frank Doel, bookseller of Marks & Co. It begins with a request in which Helene inquires after a series of books she wants to buy, saying that Barnes & Nobles's sells "marked up, grimy schoolboy" copies of the books she wants (my, how things have changed!), and continues through a friendship between Hanff and Doel in which the two never meet. As their lives grow and change, Hanff and Doel's friendship remains the one constant.
It's a special friendship, and Hanff is sharp-tongued and witty, making her a delightful narrator. I have a feeling that not all of the letters are preserved here in their entirety, but they're reprinted word-for-word, including Hanff's idiosyncratic punctuation--no doubt due to the fact that she typewrote all of her letters, but nonetheless, the letters show Hanff's personality and her rather abrupt way of corresponding.
It's a short book (just about 100 pages), but it's a special book, nonetheless, about a shared love of books. 84, Charing Cross Road is a must-read for any bibliophile. It's too bad that a woman on the subway accidentally tipped soda into my bag and all over my copy of this wonderful book...

Pepys, tongue, tins of dried eggs, and abiding friendship

...The book is comprised of letters exchanged by a New York-based American television script writer and various personnel at a small London bookshop where she prefers to buy all her books. The bookseller tolerates her insistance on paying in US currency and stoically endures her teasing and scolding when they send her a book that doesn't quite come up to her expectations. What comes across in this twenty year exchange of letters is the ease with which making and keeping friends is possible--if one only makes the effort. In the years immediately following World War II, Hanff saw that rationed food stuffs were sent to the shop so that they could be shared among the staff. The letters of thanks sent to Hanff and the enthusiasm with which the booksellers greeted friends of the author who happened to visit the shop when taking their vacations in England shows that their affection for their American friend was sincere and deep.
Don't read this collection with the expectation that you will get an in-depth view of the characters' lives. Read it as a way of discovering how simple it is for human beings to drop their defenses and treat one another with respect, civility, humor, and openness. Read it when your hope for humanity is at its lowest.
"84, Charing Cross Road" reminded me of Jan Struther's "Mrs. Miniver." I believe "Mrs. Miniver" was originally published as a series of newspaper articles. When collected into a book, it was rightly or wrongly perceived as a novel. Readers who see it as a novel usually have complaints about it's structure and seeming lack of plot (if this is what you desire, you can always rent the movie). Read as a collection of finely crafted observations of daily life in England during World War II, it's a moving tribute to the strength and durability of the human spirit. "Miniver" and "84, Charing Cross Road" make great back-to-back reads.
