A Few Ounces Too Slim, But It's Terrific
By A Customer
The cover is a garish yellow, blandly designed and lettered. There are no photographs or liner notes, and even the stage directions leave much to be desired. But to anyone familiar with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's remarkable partnership, this slim collection of material from their Tony-winning GOOD EVENING stage show is a godsend. (...) True, it's more of a Best-of collection fleshed out with some fresh bits, but the verbal dexterity of these two brilliant comics nevertheless shines quite brightly. The show includes many of their BEYOND THE FRINGE highlights (The one-legged Tarzan sketch aka "One Leg Too Few"; Moore's demented Colonel Bogey piano solo; Cook's immortal Miner monologue etc), items from their classic BBC series NOT ONLY BUT ALSO ("Frog and Peach"; "Six of the Best"; "Goodbyee" song) as well as several superb original sketches. "Gospel Truth" is a riotous interview with a droll shepherd (Cook) about the nativity. A must-read on Christmas Eve. "On Location" is the story of a widower (Moore) who welcomes his son (Cook) back from a film set with open arms, despite the fact that junior had to skip Mom's funeral to complete his scenes with Omar Sharif ("We were shooting the snow sequence and the snow was melting..."). In "Soap Opera" (aka "Resting"), an effete out-of-work actor (Moore) moonlighting as a house-cleaner persuades his reluctant employer, a judge (Cook), to help him rehearse Desdemona's death scene from OTHELLO. "Hello" is a playful satire of shallow manners, as two gentlemen who have never met try to catch up. There's also a wonderful Pete & Dud dialogue about the sexual revolution (Pete & Dud were the duo's cloth-capped, cockney bonehead alter egos). My favorite is "Mini-Drama." Cook, in dark shades, plays a sniggering Scottish cab driver who speaks admiringly of assassins who became famous for killing important people ("Lee Harvey Oswald - there's a name to be reckoned with!"). His hapless fare, Lord Nesbitt (Moore) is gradually convinced the driver is a homicidal maniac - and that he is the driver's target - after spotting a gun in the glove compartment. To avoid becoming a murder statistic, Nesbitt tries to befriend the driver ("I know this is terribly sudden, but I'm absolutely enchanted by you.") Remarkable stuff, though it's much better heard than read. (But don't despair, there is a tape of the GOOD EVENING soundtrack available on cassette, coupled with Cook's 1965 MISTY MR. WISTY LP. Well worth hunting down.) Cook was the brains of the duo, and the sketches are basically his work, though Moore's superb comic acting and musical skills made him an excellent foil. Along with BEYOND THE FRINGE, THE DAGENHAM DIALOGUES, BEDAZZLED and the NOT ONLY BUT ALSO video compilation, GOOD EVENING is a fine testament to a once-wonderful comedy team (DEREK & CLIVE have their moments, but frankly, dear reader, you wade into those uncompromisingly crude albums at your own risk; also avoid the movie HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES at all costs---it reeks). I just wish a little more thought had gone into the packaging, but hey, it took me four years to find this, so I mustn't grumble. Fans should also check out PRIVATE EYE, the spiky British satirical magazine Cook owned and contributed to until his 1995 death. So much for underachievement, huh?
