Seven Guitars, by August Wilson

Full Length, Tragic comedy

Characters: 4 male, 3 female

Exterior Set

The sixth in the author's decade by decade exploration of the black experience in America, two of which have won Pulitzer Prizes, Seven Guitars is part bawdy comedy, part dark elegy and part mystery. In the backyard of a Pittsburgh tenement in 1948, friends gather to mourn for a blues guitarist and singer who died just as his career was on the verge of taking off. The action that follows is a flashback to the busy week leading up to Floyd's sudden and unnatural death.

"Displays a narrative sweep and almost biblical richness of language and character.... Mr. Wilson writes so vividly that the play seems to have the narrative scope and depth of a novel."-The New York Times.

"Impressive ... with wild, untamed elements of symbolic fantasy, and the language ... is used with the specific riff like fluency and emotional impact of jazz."-New York Post.

Winner of the N.Y. Drama Critics Award for Best Play.

Not my favorite work by Wilson
By doc peterson
_Seven Guitars_ is August Wilson's "Century Cycle" play set in 1948 Pittsburgh. The play revolves around a successful musician, Floyd Barton, hoping to return to Chicago to make another recording. Before he can do so, however, a number of obstacles stand in his way, not the least of which is getting his guitar out of the pawn shop.

The dialouge is the real gem of this play: it alternates between humorous and tragic with almost Biblical allusions (seven characters, Floyd remarks that there are "seven ways to go," another character, Red has seven girlfriends) and prophesy for doom and death. However, the resolution to the conflicts Floyd - and the others face - seemed a bit forced to me; having read a number of Wilson's plays I am left wondering how many times he needs to conclude the story with a crime. (Of course, the same thing could be said of Shakespeare's tragedies, and perhaps I am missing something significant here given this connection.)

I found _Seven Guitars_ didn't have the same visceral punch as The Piano Lesson or speak to a broader experience as in his Fences. The sheer beauty of his dialogue and the banter between characters, however, warrants 3 stars.

"every man knows something, but most times they don't pay attention to it" (pg. 5)
By Frank L. Greenagel Jr.
This play was written in 1995 by August Wilson and is set in 1948. He wrote his ten-play cycle of life in Pittsburgh in the 20th century (one play takes place in each decade).

I taught August Wilson's plays at Elizabeth High School -- my students adored Fences and the Piano Lesson. I wish I could have taught all of his plays. I will eventually figure out how to weave his work into the Social Work curriculum at Rutgers (or the Communications curriculum). I consider Wilson to be the equal of Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams as the tri-holders of the title "America's Greatest Playwright."

"Seven Guitars" is an African-American Shiva for Floyd Barton, a blues guitarist who has recently died. The friends discuss work, relationships and mid-20th century life in the Hill District of Pittsburgh.

Must read, completely caught me off gaurd at the end, due to the fact that I was portraying the character but still an awesome read. August Wilson knew what he was doing.
