The Best Reading Method

Ok, first don't spend too much money on this one book. The reason why these books are a little expensive is that this is the old school way of teaching kids to read- which is nearing extinction. Perhaps everyone needs to write to the publisher for a re-print. Moving on, this teaching method is the most basic and effective way to build a solid reading foundation by building simple phonics concepts. This is not a sight word program. There is a short word list with every story. The stories are only written with what is on the list. Example: Dan, Fan, Man, Ran, Can, A. Your child will be filled with confidence after the first story. I got the entire series for a little over $100 after scouring ebay and amazon. Which is good being that a teacher's store would cost more for a few texts. The entire series should bring your child well over a third grade level. My child is already reading and sounding out words after the first book... I am extremely pleased. I found the workbook on Amazon, it was mislabeled as a text, thus cheaper. The text books are great alone and teach... but the workbooks are just the icing on the cake if you can find one. I am going to make photo copies of the pages so that I can keep using it and pass it on... or sell it later-- for a reasonable price if so! Note to the nuts pricing a single book in the hundreds, you are functioning as a scalper, not a book retailer. It lacks class and amazon should can you.
UPDATE: The Pig Can Jig publisher McGraw Hill Education has a website: MHE online, add a simple D0T c0m to that, and you will find it. You can purchase A Pig Can Jig text and workbooks NEW and CHEAPLY. This will keep some retailers in line on Amazon hopefully. To find it on their web site, click the "education" tab, then "elementary", then "supplemental" then "Basic Reading Series". You will find EVERYTHING there. I hope this help other parents out there.

Part of One of the Best Learning-How-to-Read Series.

In most school districts the teacher has to use a basal and give grades based on a student’s success or failure with the on-level basal. This becomes an impossible feat for teachers whose students are less skilled in reading, and the number of basal levels may be as high as 10 or 11 in inner-city schools (yes, I know that’s an euphemism) by the sixth grade: pre-primer, primer, 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 4, 5, 6 and one or two above level! (Yes, I have experienced this—or, rather, I quite soon refused to experience it.) And what if your management skills are not what you would like them to be? You will have problems with the basal approach—beyond those inherent in the books themselves.
The “basal” series (if it can be called that) I have found most successful and wonderful for readers through the third grade—and a lot of work, but worth it—is the “Basic Reading Series” written by Donald Rasmussen and Lynn Goldberg and carried by Science Research Associates, which is backed by The McGraw Hill Companies, and available, too, of course, on Amazon. In all my 30 years of teaching, the only two classes of students that made it to my eighth grade reading on grade level (or very close) were the classes (pretty much kept in tact) that experienced this SRA series in grades one through three. (It should be started in kindergarten or grade one and follow the students into the third grade—or fourth, if necessary.) Rasmussen had great perception in knowing how to teach children how to read, and great creativity in developing this program; don't know why it's not more popular.
Although the publisher does what other educational publishers do—that is, change the copyright date every four years, and a few words, to keep the product looking fresh—the essential philosophy/approach of this series has been around for over 50 years. There is definitely a reason: it's excellent and teaches reading enjoyably.

too expensive !

I would like for someone to explain to me why these books cost so much. I bought one at a thrift store and I would like to get more. Good books, but please!
