Clever 1970s Character Comedy
By Gary F. Taylor
Jimmy is not having a good day. As an actor, he is unemployed again: he has been written out of the soap opera and now he has been fired from his stage play. His girlfriend Kate has decided to dump him, his cat has just died at the vet's, and his apartment is being robbed for the third time--only on this occasion Jimmy nails the burglar, a mouthy and wayward youth named Vito. He ties Vito face down across the kitchen sink and proceeds to torment him a host of petty, serio-comic ways, and as the play progresses the two discover an unexpected bond. When girlfriend Kate arrives to make a final check on Jimmy before leaving on a date with new boyfriend Fred, Vito blows air up her skirt by pretending that she has caught them in a kinky sex game. Shocked and outraged, Kate makes her exit forever, leaving Jimmy and Vito to decided exactly how much, if any, of the kinky sex game they actually want to play out.
Originally written in the early 1970s, P.S. YOUR CAT IS DEAD gathered dust as a playscript until author James Kirkwood (1924-1989), better known as co-author of A CHORUS LINE, rewrote the piece as a novel. It proved popular enough to prompt a stage performance, and the play underwent several revisions between 1975 and 1978. The play originally drew very mixed reactions from both critics and audiences in New York, but over time it made a name in regional theatre, particularly so when Sal Mineo appeared as Vito in several productions. The show was suddenly hot and every one wanted to do it. But it soon transpired that the show was a bit too hot for its own good: profanities were not yet commonplace on the stage; the play required Jimmy to cut the pants off Vito, leaving him semi-nude while tied to the sink; and the implications of homosexuality rattled the cages of average playgoers. Producers might want to perform it, but they seldom did, and over the years it has fallen into obscurity.
Which is a pity. There are flaws in P.S. YOUR CAT IS DEAD, but they are largely flaws of place and time: the play is very, very much 1970-something and reads as dated in much the same way as BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE and CACTUS FLOWER. Even so, it is a very literate, witty, and clever script with memorable characters, and it deserves more attention than it presently receives. Recommended.

It's okay
By John Clark
The play was okay. BUT the quality of the product itself is incredible. This is a well put together soft cover play, with a nice little picture on the front to emphasize that there is mention of a cat, which really helps bring everything into perspective. The outside cover in laminated so it's sturdy and most importantly waterproof. I just poured some water onto the front of the book and it's just sitting there waiting to soak into the paper but it can't and never will be able to because the attention to detail that the manufacturers have. The play itself was kinda funny at times.
