On the road

Everyone knows that John Baeder is the Diner King. His single minded dedication to preserve, at least in paint, the romance of that fast disappearing icon: the local diner is well recognized. I've always loved his work but I hadn't realized, until I saw this book, that he takes great photos, too.
His art demands precision that can only come from taking reference photos but the images in the book are much more than that. They are rich in color, fascinating compositions and he avoids any gimmicks so that the subject matter comes across in a straightforward way and as they are taken at eye level you are easily drawn into the scene.
There are five photos of diners (and three restaurant interiors) the rest are roadsides that could be seen anywhere but it takes a trained eye to spot the potential. `George's' a bar photographed straight on, caught my eye with its various colored fascias and quirky neon sign, another winner is `Crown Parking' with an amazing selection of angled signs with colored lettering. Just the sort of image that any photorealist might tackle because of the challenge.
The book is actually a catalog to for a photo exhibition and includes a past exhibit listing and a bibliography, nicely printed with one image to a page with a 175 screen. I hope this slim book will convince some publisher that John Baeder's photos deserve a coffee-table title so that they get as wide a coverage as his diner books have received.

Great catalog

I picked up a copy of this catalog during John's show at Thomas Paul Fine Art in February. Though taken all over the U.S., the photos have the look and feel of the "Route 66" Americana that is striking and simple at the same time. The exhibit was beautiful in person, and we love that the catalog gives us a chance to enjoy all of the photographs at home.
