This moving play is about the poetic life and the inter relationship between two of the finest Great War poets: Owen who died and Siegfried Sasson who didn't. Told by means of letters and poetry, Not About Heroes paints a vivid picture of the war. It was staged to great acclaim at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and had an Off Broadway run.

Mesmerizing

I saw the play, Not About Heroes, 23 years ago, done in a tiny theatre in the round setting. I came out of the production nearly hypnotized. I was drawn so into the story and the characters, Owen and Sassoon, that it took me many minutes, sitting outside in the theatre's patio, to come back to the real world.
While reading a script is never the same as seeing a production, I was similarly drawn into the story and the characters, and read the entire script in one sitting. After doing so, I read Owen's biography, which gives a great deal of background for the drama.
This drama pulls the viewer (reader) tightly, completely, into the friendship of Owen and Sassoon while both are confined for war trauma. The audience is given pieces of both men's poems, used both for plot advancement and for character development. The story covers the development of their poetry, their own tortured experiences, and their friendship/rivalry. The playwright draws on their poems, their letters, (to others and to one another) and their own memoirs. While much dialogue is invented, it relies heavily on the playwright's research and is true, as far as I can tell, to both men. For an insight into how war and frienship affect both men, who died much too soon, reading or seeing this drama is essential.

This aproximately 90 minute play for 1 actor portaying Tennesee Williams is based on the interviews with this famous writer that appeared in the book The Ultimate Seduction. In this play Mr. Willians, responding to questions from offstage, recounts his career, his successes and his failures.

It has remained with me ever since and the publicity 100th anniversary of WW I made me want to read it. [it deserves a new production] Two poets, both broken by a senseless war, one who publically repudiated the lies behind the carnage and one, compelled by his loyalty to his fellow soldiers, to returned to his death in the trenches a fews days before the Armistice.
