Finding the Dead
By Arthur W Jordin
The Harper Connelly Omnibus (2013) is the first Fantasy omnibus in the Harper Connelly series. This volume contains Grave Sight, Grave Surprise, An Ice Cold Grave, and Grave Secret.
Harper was struck by lightning as a girl and after that she was able to sense the presence of bodies. When she is close enough to the body, she also relives the death experience.
Grave Sight (2005) is the first novel in this series. The common people of Sarne are generally hospitable, but Sheriff Harvey Bransom is very hostile. His widowed sister Sybil and her lawyer Paul Edwards seem to be more antsy than usual. Other people associated with the principals are even more hostile than the sheriff. And then there are the state police investigators.
Harper has a continuing problem with people who believe that her ability to find the dead is fraudulent or downright weird. Some even believe her to be an agent of the devil. She has been stoned as a witch and once she barely escaped from a mob. She suffers from a bad case of kill the messenger.
Having this talent has made her life more difficult. Yet she also has the consolation of giving closure to the relatives of missing persons. Still, Harper is not always successful in finding the missing bodies, particularly when the victim has been taken far away from the scene of the crime. Her own sister is one such case.
Harper and Tolliver are very close. Although they came from different families, her mother and his father were married when they were older children. Since these parents were alcoholics and drug users, their children were more neglected than parented. Harper and Tolliver raised their younger siblings with a little help from Mark, Tolliver's older brother.
Having personal experience with such neglected and abused children, I find Harper's backstory to be fairly typical of such cases, even to the children trying to avoid the governmental authorities. Naturally, these two are very protective of -- and dependent upon -- each other.
Grave Surprise (2006) is the second novel in this series.
Grave Surprise (2006) is the second fantasy mystery novel in the Harper Connelly series, following Grave Sight. In the previous volume, the final confrontation and shootout exposes the secrets of almost everybody. Harper and Tolliver are lucky to get out of town alive.
In this novel, Harper is hired to give a demonstration for an occult studies class in a newly documented graveyard in Memphis, Tennessee. The contract is issued by Bingham College for the class of Professor Clyde Nonley. As far as Harper is concerned, the Professor is a professional jerk.
The graveyard is on the grounds of the college and a detailed list of burials and causes of death had been discovered about three months previously. At first, the professor enjoys directing Harper from grave to grave, but her detailed answers to his queries are beginning to upset his preconceptions. Then he directs her to a grave up against the fence around the cemetery.
At first, Harper declares the occupant to be a young girl and the professor gleefully states that she is wrong. Then Harper notices that another set of bones lies in a coffin below the girl's body. Then she suddenly recognizes the identity of the most recent body.
Tabitha Morgenstern had disappeared in Nashville about eighteen months prior to her rediscovery. Harper had been called in a month after the disappearance and had followed every possible lead within the Nashville area before giving up on the case. Maybe the body had been in Memphis even before she had started her search.
In this story, Joel Morgenstern and his first wife were originally from Memphis, but had moved to Nashville during their marriage. Whitney Morgenstern birthed Victor and then died from cancer in Nashville. Two years later, Joel married Diane and she raised her stepson from a baby. Then their daughter Tabitha was born in Nashville.
Since Harper had only known the Morgensterns in Nashville, she is definitely surprised to learn that the family is now living in Memphis. Joel had apparently brought his wife back home about a year ago. Since then, Diane has become pregnant and is expecting a son. She is very close to birthing the baby.
The Morgensterns are very grateful to Harper for finally finding the body of their daughter. They invite Harper and Tolliver over for lunch to share the food offerings from their friends. There Harper meets other members of the family, including Fred Hart, the father of Whitney and Felicia. Of course, both Harper and Tolliver know Felicia Hart as Victor's aunt. They also meet Joel's parents -- Judy and Ben -- and his brother David.
Harper and Victor had previously shared a moment of shared grief in Nashville, so he confides several bits of information with her at the luncheon. Interrupted before he can finish his confession, Harper is pleased that Victor later shows up at the hotel. Unhappily, so does his uncle David, who speaks somewhat coarsely at Harper and gets punched in the stomach by Tolliver.
An Ice Cold Grave (2007) is the third novel in this series. Harper and Tolliver travel to Doraville, South Carolina, during the ice and snow of January. They have been called in to search for six youths who have become missing during the past five years. The sheriff -- Sandra Rockwell -- had been a deputy who ran against the former sheriff over his mismanagement of this issue. Yet she has not been able to discover any additional leads.
The grandmother of the last missing boy suggested that Harper be used to find the bodies. After checking the police grapevine and getting a positive recommendation from a participant in a former case, Sheriff Rockwell asked for Harper to perform a search. After discussing the case with the sheriff, Harper meets with Twyla Cotton, the woman who is responsible for her involvement in the case.
The sheriff provides a list of the most suspicious locales. Twyla drives Harper and Tolliver around to each site. Harper finds the bodies of eight boys -- including Twyla's grandson -- on the grounds of an abandoned house with a two-car garage off to one side. Harper marks the burial sites with red flags while Twyla calls the police.
The police discover decayed bodies at each site and contact the State Bureau of Investigation to report the find. SBI agents and technicians come to Doraville to verify the identities and to gather any available evidence about the murderer. Harper is prepared to leave town when she is attacked outside the motel.
Grave Secret (2009) is the fourth fantasy novel in this series. Harper and Tolliver have come to Texas on a case. Lizzie Joyce wants to know how her grandfather had died. According to the death report, Rich Joyce's cause of death was heart failure. Of course, the heart fails in every death.
Lizzie and Kate are waiting for Harper and Tolliver in the ranch house. Then a jeep arrives with Drexell and Chip. Everybody loads up and heads toward the cemetery.
The cemetery is located in the middle of nowhere. Harper takes off her shoes and walks over the graves, announcing the cause of death as she goes. When she reaches the vicinity of the Rich's grave, she finds the burial spot of Mariah Parish, his caretaker.
Mariah had died after birthing a baby. Both Drexell and Chip react to this news. Then Harper walks onto Rich's grave and senses that he had been startled by a thrown rattlesnake and then had a heart attack.
The Joyce party doesn't want to believe Harper's statements. Yet Lizzie pays the rest of Harper's fee. Then Harper and Tolliver leave for Garland, Texas, to visit Mariella and Grace.
During the visit with their sisters, Iona announces that she is pregnant. Harper is surprised that Iona could conceive at her age. The girls are thrown for a serious loop, but seem pleased at having a younger sibling.
These volumes are the only novels in this sequence. However, the author has other omnibuses for the Aurora Teagarden and Lily Bard mysteries.
Highly recommended for Harris fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of murder mysteries, amateur detectives, and mystic talents. Read and enjoy!

Master "Quirk" Artist
By theil
Charlaine Harris has written yet another winning series with The Harper Connelly books. I love interesting, troublesome, and quirky characters, and Harper "fits-the-bill." In my book, Harper is quirkier than Sookie and Roe and that is quite a feat!-) Charlaine Harris is truly a Master crowd pleaser!
